You can take better travel photos with the phone you already have by composing deliberately, tapping to focus, controlling exposure, keeping the phone still in low light, and making a restrained edit. Camera menus and features vary by iPhone or Galaxy model and software version, so use the controls available on your device rather than expecting every setting below to appear.
1. Compose the shot before you tap the shutter
Turn on the camera grid or composition guide to help keep horizons level and strong vertical lines—such as buildings—straight. On iPhone, go to Settings > Camera and enable Grid and Level. On Galaxy phones, look for Composition guide or Grid lines in Camera settings; the path depends on the One UI version and device. Apple and Samsung document these alignment aids in their camera guidance: Apple’s iPhone camera guide and Samsung’s Composition guide instructions.
Before using digital zoom, take a step to one side or move closer if it is safe. Changing your position can improve how the subject relates to the foreground and background, and may help exclude distractions. Look for a clear main subject—a person, landmark, meal, or street detail—and check the edges of the frame for clutter.

2. Focus on the subject and manage exposure
Tap the main subject on the screen to place focus there. If the photo looks too bright or dark, adjust exposure rather than repeatedly reframing at random. On iPhone, tapping sets the focus area and reveals an exposure control you can drag; touch and hold can lock focus and exposure. Watch what the brightness adjustment does to the subject as well as the background. A bright sky or lamp can dominate the meter and leave a person or foreground too dim. For a backlit subject, try changing your angle first; if you keep the backlight, adjust exposure to favor the subject while accepting that some bright areas may lose detail.
3. Use available light with intention
For portraits, soft daylight or open shade often gives a more even-looking result than harsh direct sun. Strong light can create areas that are both overexposed and underexposed in the same scene; Samsung’s camera guidance also recommends cleaning the lens and changing the angle when glare or lighting is affecting a photo. If a window, sunset, or bright sky is behind someone, move until the light falls more favorably or tap the subject and adjust exposure. A small change in where you stand can matter more than a filter applied later.
4. Take sharper photos after dark
When Night mode is available, use it for dim scenes and keep the phone still until the capture finishes. Night mode may take longer than an ordinary shot because the phone is gathering and processing multiple exposures. Avoid unnecessary flash when you want the scene’s ambient light to remain visible. Availability and controls vary by model and software.

iPhone: let Night mode finish
On supported iPhones, Night mode can turn on automatically in low light. The phone sets the capture time automatically, with manual exposure-time options on supported devices. Hold the phone steady throughout the capture. Apple Support advises: “Use a tripod for even more detailed Night mode photos.” Read Apple’s Night mode instructions for the controls available on your iPhone.
Samsung Galaxy: check whether Night mode is available
On Galaxy devices where the feature is available, Samsung lists the path as Camera > More > Night. Samsung US Support describes its processing this way: “Night mode uses multi-frame processing to combine 30 images into one clear photo.” That figure is Samsung’s product description, not a claim about every Galaxy phone or other smartphones; Samsung says availability varies by model and software version. For night skies or static city scenes, consider a tripod
A compact tripod is optional, not necessary for ordinary travel snapshots. For longer exposures, Samsung recommends a stable tripod and a remote or timed shutter so pressing the screen does not move the phone. If you pack one, compare its folded size, stability, phone-holder compatibility, and whether the remote works with your device. Samsung’s guidance is at its Night mode support page.
5. Get yourself into the travel photo
Use your phone’s timer, set it on a stable surface or tripod, and frame yourself with enough of the destination visible to give the image context. Take more than one composition—perhaps one wider frame and one closer portrait—so you can choose later. On iPhone, the timer is in the Camera controls; exact controls vary by model and iOS release. 6. Edit lightly, then compare with the original
Start with the crop and horizon: remove distracting edges and straighten the frame. Then make modest adjustments to light and color. Apple’s Photos app includes light, color, crop, and rotation controls; see Apple’s editing guide. Compare the result with the original before saving so a stronger edit does not make the scene look less like the place you photographed.
When manual control or RAW is worth the extra work
For quick travel pictures, start with the Camera app’s automatic mode and Night mode if available. Manual controls and RAW are more useful when you want to shape a difficult exposure yourself and are willing to edit afterward. Samsung says Expert RAW can be downloaded from Galaxy Store and is available on Galaxy S20 or later. It saves JPEG and RAW (Linear DNG 16-bit) files and provides manual control over ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, and focus. Availability of advanced options varies by device; Samsung also notes that high-resolution processing can lengthen the interval between rapid shots. Details are in Samsung’s Expert RAW guidance.
RAW is not automatically the better choice: it creates a more involved editing workflow and larger files than a compressed JPEG. For a photo you want to share quickly, the standard camera output may be more convenient.

A quick workflow to use on location
- Set the frame: enable the grid or composition guide, level the horizon, and move your position before reaching for digital zoom.
- Choose the subject: tap it to focus and check whether the background or bright sky is distracting from it.
- Adjust for the light: change your angle or exposure if the subject is too dark or bright.
- For a dark scene: use Night mode if your phone offers it, hold still until capture ends, and use a tripod with a timer or remote for longer exposures.
