To take better photos with a foldable, use the rear cameras with the cover screen as a viewfinder when your model supports it; choose the inner selfie camera when you want a straightforward front-facing composition. For hands-free shots, prop the partly folded phone on a stable surface, frame the shot, and use a timer or supported remote shutter. The exact modes and controls vary by model.
Choose the camera that fits the shot
The inner selfie camera is the simplest option when the phone is open and you want a familiar front-camera view. The rear-camera selfie workflow is useful when you want to compose with the cover or outer display while the rear cameras face you. It can also make it easier to frame a group or use a rear lens that is available in that mode.
There is no universal image-quality winner: manufacturer instructions describe camera workflows, not a cross-device image-quality test. Samsung says opening a Galaxy Z Flip provides access to all camera modes and wide and ultrawide lenses; Pixel Fold models have distinct rear, inward-facing, and outward-facing cameras. Check your phone’s camera app and model-specific help rather than assuming another foldable’s controls apply.
Take a rear-camera selfie with the cover screen
- Open the Camera app and select the rear-camera selfie, screen-switch, or equivalent option if your model offers one.
- Turn the phone so its rear cameras point toward you, then use the cover or outer screen to check the framing.
- Adjust the composition and take the picture using an on-screen shutter or a supported hands-free control.
Google calls this feature Rear Camera Selfie on Pixel Fold. Samsung documents cover-screen preview while the Z Flip is unfolded and Quick shot selfies while it is folded. Fit more people into the frame
If your phone offers an ultrawide rear camera in the selfie mode, switch to it for a wider group frame. Google’s Pixel Fold camera article describes selecting the 0.6 ultrawide option to include more people. That lens and control are specific to the Pixel Fold guidance; other phones may not offer an ultrawide camera in this mode.
Use the folded cover-screen camera carefully
Samsung says Z Flip3 and later models can record video from the cover screen, while PHOTO, VIDEO, and PORTRAIT availability varies by generation. For Z Flip4, Z Flip5, and Z Flip6, Samsung says the aspect ratio can be set while unfolded and carried over to Quick shots. Consult the instructions for your particular generation before relying on a mode or setting.

Set up a hands-free photo with the hinge
- Partly fold the phone and place it on a stable, level surface, with the intended camera facing the people or scene.
- Adjust the hinge angle, then check that the phone is steady and the framing is right.
- Set a timer or enable a supported palm or voice shutter, move into position, and let the phone take the shot without touching it.
On Pixel Fold, Google documents 3- and 10-second timer choices, a palm trigger after selecting a timer, and a voice shutter that starts a three-second delay. Google also describes tabletop mode for group photos and hands-free night-sky photography. Samsung’s Z Flip guidance describes Flex mode photography with the phone held or placed on a flat surface; users can adjust the top-cover angle, choose a front or rear lens, and tap Capture. Supported hands-free options include voice commands and palm recognition. Samsung cautions that “Flex mode is supported only within a certain angle range.”
Controls are model-specific. Samsung also documents configurable volume-button actions on listed Z Flip models. On Z Flip6 and later, its guide describes FlexCam auto framing; its auto-zoom range is shorter than standard zoom. Use your phone’s own camera settings or model guide to confirm which controls are available.

Keep the phone stable
A partly folded phone can act as its own support, but the hinge angle and surface must hold it securely. Avoid an edge, uneven surface, or position where the phone could slide or topple. Google recommends a stable surface or stand for voice-triggered hands-free photography. An adjustable smartphone tripod stand is optional if the hinge or available surface cannot provide the height or framing you want.

Some foldables offer more than a cover-screen selfie and an inner camera. Google describes Pixel Fold tabletop positioning with the outer screen down and rear cameras aimed at the subject, as well as dual-screen video preview for specified Pixel Fold generations. Samsung documents Camcorder mode on Z Flip6 and later, using the partly folded phone held sideways. Motorola’s camera help describes folding a supported phone 90 degrees for Camcorder mode, Quick capture camera selection, and external-display mirroring. These are brand- and model-specific examples, not standard features of every foldable.
