For sharper periscope zoom photos, use the telephoto view for a distant subject, give the camera enough light, and keep the phone steady. If a close subject looks blurry, the telephoto camera may be too close to focus; if a distant subject is soft, check which camera is active, clean the lens, and reduce camera movement.
Why are my phone zoom photos blurry?
Blur at high zoom often comes from movement, poor light, a smudged lens, or using the telephoto camera too close to the subject. The camera may also switch between rear lenses as you zoom, so the view on screen does not necessarily mean the periscope lens is active.
Close subjects may be inside the focus limit
Telephoto cameras are intended for more distant subjects. Samsung warns that a close object can be out of focus when high zoom selects a telephoto camera, and its minimum focus distance varies by model. If the subject looks soft, move farther away and reframe rather than assuming the camera is defective. Samsung’s blurry-photo troubleshooting guidance discusses focus distance and other image-quality checks.

At telephoto magnification, small movements can have a visible effect on the image. Dim light can also make focusing and exposure more difficult. For clearer results, hold the phone steadily and seek brighter, even light when possible. OPPO’s general camera tips similarly emphasize light, steadiness, and framing; its hardware claims apply to its Find X8 products, not every phone. OPPO’s camera tips provide that product-specific context.

How to take sharper periscope zoom photos
- Choose a subject at a suitable distance. Use the telephoto view for something farther away. If a nearby subject will not focus, step back and reframe.
- Find better light. Prefer a brighter scene or position the subject where it is better lit. In dim conditions, the phone may struggle to focus or expose the image cleanly.
- Check which lens the phone selected. Zoom thresholds and camera switching vary by model. Google says Pixel phones automatically choose a lens while zooming; on your own phone, check any lens label or selector in the camera app instead of assuming a particular zoom number engages the periscope camera. Google Pixel Camera Help explains automatic lens selection for Pixel devices.
- Stabilize your grip. Hold the phone with both hands and brace your arms or body against something stable when practical. For a stationary subject, a compatible phone tripod can reduce hand movement. A tripod cannot stop a moving subject from blurring.
- Tap the subject to set focus and exposure, if available. On Pixel, Google documents tapping the screen to focus and expose. Camera controls differ, so use the equivalent option only if your app provides it.
- Inspect the lens and accessories. Wipe away fingerprints or smudges. Samsung also advises checking whether a case, camera cover, or lens protector is interfering with the camera.
- For a static scene, consider taking several frames. If your camera app supports continuous shooting, select the clearest frame. Xiaomi suggests this approach for the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G; it is not a guarantee for every phone or moving subject.
Does a periscope camera make every zoom level optical?
No. A periscope design folds the optical path so a phone can fit a longer focal length into a slim body. It does not mean every displayed zoom level is optical, or that image quality stays identical across all zoom settings. Manufacturers describe the design in different ways: see OPPO’s explanation of AI Telescope Zoom and Motorola’s overview of phone lenses.
Phones may switch among rear cameras automatically, and the behavior depends on the model and shooting conditions. If the image changes character as you zoom, that may reflect a camera switch or software processing rather than the periscope lens alone. Treat the zoom number as a framing control, not proof of which hardware is being used.

- Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
- Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
- Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
- Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
- Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.
Does phone zoom need OIS or a tripod?
There is no single stabilization rule for all periscope cameras. Xiaomi says the telephoto camera on the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G does not support OIS and recommends holding the phone steadily or using a tripod or gimbal to reduce shake. That statement is specific to that model. OPPO describes OIS on its Find X8 telephoto system, illustrating that stabilization support varies by phone. Xiaomi’s model-specific guidance covers the Redmi camera.
A tripod is most useful for a stationary subject, especially when you need to hold a composition steadily. Check that the mount fits your phone. It will not correct an out-of-focus close subject, and it cannot freeze motion in the scene.

What to compare when choosing a phone for distant photos
Maximum advertised zoom alone does not show how reliably a phone will photograph distant subjects. Compare the details that affect the way you shoot:
- Whether the phone has a dedicated optical telephoto or periscope camera, and the optical focal-length step it provides.
- Whether the telephoto camera has OIS or another stabilization method.
- The telephoto camera’s minimum focus distance.
- How the phone behaves in low light, including whether it switches to another camera.
- Whether the camera app shows the selected lens and offers useful focus or exposure controls.
Those specifications and behaviors vary by model. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a controlled comparison or a best-performing phone, so judge a particular device by its specifications and camera behavior rather than by a universal zoom ranking.
