On Windows 10 or Windows 11, press Windows logo key + Shift + S to select part of the screen, then paste the capture with Ctrl + V or open it in Snipping Tool to edit, save, and share. For a complete screen, use Print Screen (clipboard) or Windows logo key + Print Screen (a file saved in PicturesScreenshots). The right shortcut depends on whether you need a region, one window, the whole display, or a reusable attachment.

These shortcuts are documented by Microsoft for Windows 10 and Windows 11. A capture sent from the clipboard is not automatically a file; save it first when the recipient needs an attachment that can be downloaded or reused.
Take a selected-area screenshot
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen dims and the snipping overlay appears.
- Choose the rectangular or freeform selection mode if the overlay offers a choice.
- Drag around the content you want. Release the mouse or trackpad button to complete the snip.
- Windows copies the image to the clipboard. Switch to the destination app and press Ctrl + V to paste it.
- For markup, cropping, saving, or sharing, select the capture notification. It opens the image in Snipping Tool.
This is the most flexible built-in method when you need one part of a page, dialog, error message, or application. It avoids exposing unrelated content in the rest of the display.
Capture the whole screen
Copy it for immediate pasting
- Press Print Screen. Depending on the keyboard, the key may read PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn.
- Open the email, document, or chat that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl + V. The full-screen image is inserted from the clipboard.
If your PC is configured so Print Screen opens the snipping overlay instead, press Windows + Shift + S directly for a predictable selection workflow. Microsoft allows the Print Screen behavior to be changed in Windows settings, so do not assume every computer uses the same action.

Save it directly as a file
- Press Windows logo key + Print Screen.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures, then Screenshots.
- Select the newly created image when attaching it to an email or uploading it to a service.
This option is useful when you know you will need a file rather than a one-time paste. The exact filename is assigned by Windows; use the newest item if several screenshots are present.
Capture only the active window
- Click the application window you want to show so it is the focused window.
- Press Alt + Print Screen.
- Move to the destination app and press Ctrl + V.
Only the active window is copied, which is useful for reporting an application problem without including other open windows. If you need to edit or keep the image, paste it into Snipping Tool or another image-capable app and save a file there.
Edit, annotate, save, and share with Snipping Tool
Snipping Tool supports four still-image capture modes: freeform, rectangle, window, and full screen. A completed snip is copied into the Snipping Tool window, where you can make it easier to understand before sending it.
Open the editor
Select the notification that appears after a Windows+Shift+S capture, or open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and use its capture control. The editor provides options to mark up the image, crop it, save it, and use the app’s Share command.

Use a delay for disappearing menus
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Set the delay to 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 seconds.
- Start the snip, open the menu or tooltip you need, and wait for the countdown to finish.
- Review the result, then crop or annotate before saving or sharing.
Delay is preferable to trying to hold a menu open while pressing a shortcut. Snipping Tool also describes video snips, but those are recordings rather than still screenshots and are outside this guide.
Optional features on some Windows 11 PCs
Microsoft says Perfect screenshot and Color picker are available only on Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. They are enhancements, not requirements: the standard capture, markup, crop, save, and share workflow works without them.
Send the screenshot
Paste without creating a file
For a quick reply, capture with Windows+Shift+S, Print Screen, or Alt+Print Screen, then press Ctrl + V in an app that accepts images. This is usually the fastest route for email composition, a support chat, a document, or a compatible messaging application.
Attach a saved image
- Save the snip from Snipping Tool, or use the file created by Windows+Print Screen.
- In the recipient app, choose its normal Attach, Insert image, or upload control.
- Browse to the saved image, commonly under
PicturesScreenshots, and confirm the attachment. - Check the preview before sending, especially if the screenshot contains private account details or notifications.
Attachment labels and upload controls differ among email and messaging programs, so follow the destination app’s own workflow after the Windows capture is ready.

Share from Snipping Tool
Open the capture in Snipping Tool, make any necessary crop or markup, and choose Share from the app menu. This is convenient when you want to send the edited result without separately navigating to its folder.
Fix common screenshot problems
Nothing happens when you press Print Screen
Keyboard labels and settings vary. Try Windows + Shift + S directly. If you expected the overlay from Print Screen, check whether your Windows configuration assigns that key to screen snipping; Microsoft documents that the behavior can be changed.
The image did not appear in the folder
Print Screen and Alt + Print Screen copy images to the clipboard; they do not, by themselves, create files. Paste the image into Snipping Tool or another image-capable app and save it. Only Windows + Print Screen is the shortcut in this guide that directly saves the full-screen image to PicturesScreenshots.
The pasted result is blank or an old image
Capture again, then paste immediately with Ctrl + V. A clipboard capture can be replaced by another copy operation before you use it. If you need a durable copy, open the notification in Snipping Tool and save the image.

The menu disappears before capture
Use Snipping Tool’s one-to-five-second delay, open the menu during the countdown, and let the capture occur automatically.
Your laptop has no PrtScn key
Microsoft documents Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a fallback for devices without a dedicated PrtScn button. Laptop Fn mappings differ, so consult the device maker’s keyboard documentation if that combination does not respond. You can always use Windows+Shift+S when the Windows overlay is available.
The screenshot includes information you did not intend to send
Use a selected-area snip or active-window capture instead of a full-screen capture. Before sharing, open the image in Snipping Tool, crop out unrelated content, and check for notifications, account names, or other private details.
Which method should you use?
- Need one detail: Windows+Shift+S, then select a rectangle or freeform area.
- Need the focused application only: Alt+Print Screen, then paste.
- Need the whole display immediately: Print Screen, then paste.
- Need a file to attach later: Windows+Print Screen, or save the snip from Snipping Tool.
- Need markup or cropping: Open the capture in Snipping Tool before sending.
- Need a disappearing menu: Configure Snipping Tool’s one-to-five-second delay.
