You can capture a website without installing an extension. For a one-time full-page image, Firefox’s built-in Take Screenshot tool is the simplest option: open the page, press Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+S (macOS), choose Save full page, and download the PNG. Choose Save visible when you only need the current viewport, or select a region or element for a partial capture.
Choose the capture you actually need

A normal desktop screenshot records pixels currently on screen; it does not automatically include the rest of a long page. Use a browser’s full-page command when you need the entire document.
Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool
Firefox desktop includes a Screenshots feature for visible pages, full pages, regions and individual elements. Mozilla describes it as a way to capture visible or full web pages and copy or save the images. No add-on is required.
- Open the webpage in Firefox desktop and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose one of the capture modes:
- Save full page captures the document from top to bottom.
- Save visible captures the current viewport only.
- Drag to select a region, or point to a page element when Firefox offers an element selection.
- Click Download to save a PNG in Firefox’s configured downloads folder, or click Copy to put the image on the clipboard for pasting into another application.
If a page changes while Firefox is stitching a full-page image, wait for animations, expanding menus and lazy content to settle before starting the capture. A full-page screenshot represents the rendered page, not an interactive copy of it.

Capture only the visible screen
When you need exactly what is displayed, use Firefox’s Save visible option. You can also use your operating system’s built-in shortcut, but the result is a screen image rather than a webpage-aware capture.
- Windows: use the system snipping shortcut to select a rectangle or window.
- macOS: use the system screenshot shortcuts to capture a selected area, window or screen.
- Linux: use the screenshot utility supplied by your desktop environment.
These operating-system methods are useful for browser chrome, multiple windows or a dialog that a webpage tool cannot select. They cannot capture content outside the visible display without a separate scrolling workflow.
Use Chrome without an extension from the command line
Chrome’s documented headless mode is a terminal workflow, not a normal click-through browser feature. Locate your installed Chrome executable if the chrome command is not on your PATH, then run:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.comThis writes screenshot.png in the current working directory. Change --window-size to the viewport dimensions you need. Chrome also supports --print-to-pdf when a PDF is more useful than an image. The --timeout option sets the maximum wait in milliseconds before capture, even if the page is still loading; increase it for pages that render slowly, while recognising that a longer wait does not guarantee that every late request has finished.

Save to a known directory
Run the command from the folder where you want the output, or move the generated file afterward. A headless capture uses the page’s rendered viewport, so responsive layouts may differ from what you see in a maximized desktop window.
Use Firefox headless mode
Firefox also supports command-line screenshots. The --screenshot [path] option implies headless mode, and --window-size width,height sets the viewport:
firefox --screenshot shot.png --window-size 1365,900 https://example.comUse the full path to the Firefox executable when necessary. This approach is convenient for shell scripts and servers; for an individual capture, Firefox’s graphical Screenshots interface requires less setup.
Automate captures with Playwright
Playwright is appropriate when you capture the same site repeatedly, need a reproducible script, or process many URLs. Install Playwright in your project, then use its Page API:

Firefox DevTools for an element or full page
Firefox DevTools can capture an entire page or a single element. If the camera screenshot button is not visible, enable it in DevTools settings first, then use the button on the selected document or node. This route is useful when you need a precise element rather than a manually dragged rectangle.

The result contains only the top of the page
You used a viewport or operating-system capture. Repeat the operation with Firefox Save full page, Chrome’s headless --screenshot, Firefox’s --screenshot, or Playwright’s fullPage: true.

Images or text are missing
Wait until the page finishes rendering and lazy-loaded sections appear. Scroll through important areas before a manual capture, or in Playwright wait for a specific image, heading or main container. A command-line timeout controls how long the browser waits; it does not repair a page that fails to load.
The layout is unexpectedly narrow or mobile-sized
Your selected viewport controls responsive breakpoints. Set an explicit width and height in Chrome, Firefox or Playwright, and repeat the capture at the dimensions you intend to document.
A cookie dialog, newsletter or chat bubble covers content
Dismiss the overlay before capturing when you are using a built-in browser tool. If it cannot be dismissed, select a different region, use DevTools to target the underlying element, or use an automated capture service that can remove common overlays.
The terminal says the browser command is not found
Use the installed browser’s executable path instead of chrome or firefox, or add that directory to your PATH. The command-line examples assume a desktop installation accessible to your shell.

The page requires a login
A new headless session has no existing cookies. Use an authenticated Playwright context and protect any saved state, or capture the page interactively in Firefox after signing in. Do not place passwords or session cookies in a command that will be recorded in shell history.
