For a complete Google Doc, use File > Print on a computer. Google Docs opens print settings and automatically downloads the document as a PDF. That is the supported way to preserve every page, but it is not one tall PNG or JPEG image. If you specifically need a single image, browser capture tools can be tried, yet Google Docs may expose only the visible editor area rather than the entire document.

Choose the right kind of “scrolling screenshot” first

A PDF and a scrolling image solve different problems. Decide what the recipient must do with the result before choosing a method.

Goal Best output Layout and reliability Extra software
Read, print, archive, or send the whole document PDF from Google Docs Complete document; print layout can differ from the continuous editor view None
Place the entire document in one visual canvas PNG, JPEG, or WebP image Depends on the browser or extension; Google Docs may return only the visible window DevTools or a full-page extension

There is no Google Docs command that exports a pageless document as one infinitely tall image. Pageless mode controls how the editor scrolls; it does not change the export format.

Save the complete Google Doc as a PDF (the dependable method)

  1. Open the document on a computer.
  2. Choose File > Print.
  3. In the print settings window, select the printer or PDF destination and adjust the available settings.
  4. Click Print. For a Google document, Google states that “A PDF file will automatically download.”

The resulting PDF contains the whole document and is normally easier to search, copy, print, and share than a very tall bitmap. It also avoids the stitching errors that can occur when a browser captures a scrolling page.

Why the PDF may not look like the editor

Pageless documents are designed for continuous on-screen scrolling. During printing, images are adjusted to the page width and wide tables can be squeezed to fit. Consequently, the PDF preview can have different line breaks, image sizes, and table proportions from what you saw while editing.

If printed appearance matters, change the document to a paged layout before printing:

  1. Open File > Page setup.
  2. Select Pages instead of Pageless, then choose OK.

Google also provides Format > Switch to pageless format or Format > Switch to pages format. Pages mode gives you page breaks and more predictable control over the printed result. Switching modes changes the document view; it does not create a screenshot.

When you truly need one tall image

Use the following methods only when the deliverable must be an image file. Make a copy of the document, or test with a non-sensitive file, before relying on any capture tool.

Try Chrome DevTools’ full-size capture

A Chrome procedure documented by Zapier on April 20, 2026 is:

  1. Open the Google Doc in Chrome.
  2. Open DevTools with Cmd+Option+I on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows.
  3. Open the DevTools command menu with Cmd+Shift+P on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows.
  4. Type screenshot.
  5. Choose Capture full size screenshot.

Do not assume this produces a complete Doc. In the guide’s Google Docs test, the command captured only the visible Google Docs window. Web applications can expose a drawing surface or an internal scrolling region instead of a normal document page, so the result depends on the current Docs implementation.

Open the downloaded file and inspect the bottom, middle, tables, and images. If the image ends at the original viewport or repeats a fixed toolbar, the capture did not include the document’s full scrollable content.

Experiment with a full-page extension

GoFullPage’s Chrome Web Store listing describes full-page capture with image and PDF export. Its listing includes a changelog entry dated September 24, 2026. The listing does not establish that the extension can capture the complete Google Docs editing canvas, so treat it as an experiment rather than a guaranteed solution.

  • Use a copy or a document that contains no confidential information.
  • Start the capture and allow the extension to scroll through the page.
  • Check that the first page, every major section, tables, images, and the final lines are present.
  • Look for duplicated sticky controls, blank seams, missing lazy-loaded images, or clipped content.
  • If the result is incomplete, use the PDF workflow instead of repeatedly retrying the same capture.

How to make an image capture more reliable

Prepare the document

  • Wait until images, comments, and embedded content finish loading before starting.
  • Close sidebars, menus, and dialogs that could be stitched into every segment.
  • Set a practical browser zoom and window size; extremely small text can become unreadable in the final bitmap.
  • For a pageless document, remember that wide tables may require horizontal scrolling. A vertical capture can miss columns that are off-screen.

Verify the file instead of trusting the thumbnail

Scroll through the exported image at 100% or open it in an editor that reports its pixel dimensions. Compare the last visible line with the end of the Doc, inspect every table, and confirm that images are not replaced by blank placeholders. A file that opens successfully can still be only a viewport capture.

Protect document privacy

A browser extension can potentially process the page content it captures. Avoid installing one in a managed work profile without approval, and do not test with legal, financial, medical, or proprietary documents unless your organization permits that workflow. A PDF created by Google’s own print command keeps the export inside the normal Docs/print path.

Common problems and fixes

“File > Print” is missing or behaves differently

Use the desktop web version of Google Docs. The documented workflow is for a computer; mobile apps use different sharing and export controls. If the browser blocks a pop-up or download, allow it for Docs and repeat the command.

The PDF has different page breaks from the Doc

That is expected when printing from Pageless mode. Switch to Pages through File > Page setup, review the print preview, and print again. Wide tables and images are fitted to the paper width.

DevTools saved only what was on screen

This is a known limitation for the Google Docs test reported in the April 20, 2026 Chrome guide. DevTools’ “full size” label does not guarantee that an application’s internal document canvas will be traversed. Use the PDF, or test a full-page extension and verify its output.

The extension image has gaps, duplicates, or a missing ending

Fixed toolbars, asynchronous images, and nested scrolling areas can confuse stitching. Close floating controls, wait for all content to load, reduce unusual zoom settings, and retry on a copy. If the same defect remains, stop using the image workflow and export a PDF.

The capture shows a sign-in page instead of the document

The capture process must have access to the document. Confirm that you are signed into the correct Google account in the browser, or use a sharing setting and URL appropriate for the intended recipient. Never make a sensitive Doc public merely to obtain a screenshot.

The image is too large to open or share

A single bitmap containing many pages can consume substantial memory and may be awkward in chat, email, or a browser tab. Resize a verified image for distribution, or provide the PDF as the primary copy and a shorter image excerpt for visual reference.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can request a screenshot of a URL with one GET call. Use a Google Docs link that the capture request can actually reach; a private editor URL that resolves to a Google sign-in page will capture that page rather than the document. The service can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and its full-page mode can load lazy images before capture.

Relevant controls include a chosen viewport or device preset, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, a click before capture, hiding selectors, waiting for a selector, delay, or network idle, and blocking ads, trackers, requests, or resource types. You can also choose PDF paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and page ranges. Cookies, custom headers, user-agent, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a caller-selected cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification are available when your workflow needs them. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted, which can simplify migration.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the current request options.

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can request the capture without a manually configured browser.
