That is the standard Android screenshot shortcut and does not use Samsung’s palm-swipe gesture. If the shortcut fails, hold the Power button and choose Screenshot when that option appears. Google Pixel phones also offer a Screenshot button in Recent apps, and Google Assistant can take one by voice on supported setups.
Use Power + Volume Down first
Google’s Android Help gives this instruction: “Press the Power and Volume down buttons at the same time.” Open the exact screen you want, then press both buttons together. You do not need an accessory or the palm-swipe setting.
- Open the app, page or message you want to capture.
- Press Power and Volume Down simultaneously. A quick press is better than holding either button.
- Wait for the screenshot preview, thumbnail or animation.
- Tap the preview if you want to edit or share it. The preview controls and timing vary by phone model.
This is the broadest starting method because it is built into Android, but manufacturers can change the on-screen confirmation and follow-up controls. Google’s general instructions are available in Android Help.
Try the Power menu when the buttons do not work
Some Android phones place a Screenshot command in the Power menu.

- Open the screen to capture.
- Hold the Power button briefly until the Power menu appears.
- Tap Screenshot, if your phone shows that command.
- Use the resulting preview to edit or share the image.
Not every phone includes this item. If it is absent, return to the two-button method and then check the support page for your exact model and software version. Menu names are not universal across Samsung Galaxy, Pixel and other Android devices.
Google Pixel: capture from Recent apps
On a Google Pixel, Recent apps can provide a button-based alternative that avoids both palm swipe and the Power + Volume Down combination. Google documents this workflow for some Pixel steps on Android 11 and later.
- Open the app or screen you want to capture.
- With gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold. With three-button navigation, tap Overview.
- In the Recent apps carousel, select the app card.
- Tap Screenshot.
The exact gesture depends on your navigation mode. If the Screenshot button is missing, use the standard two-button shortcut or consult Pixel Help’s Pixel screenshot instructions.
Use your voice on Pixel when available
Pixel Help also describes an optional voice method: say, “Hey Google, take a screenshot.” Assistant setup, language, account settings and device availability can affect whether this works. It is therefore an alternative, not a universal replacement for the buttons.

Samsung and palm-swipe-specific guidance
Palm swipe is a Samsung gesture, not a requirement for taking Android screenshots. Samsung Community guidance says its availability depends on the device model and operating-system version. The two-button shortcut is the practical alternative, but Galaxy menu labels and settings can differ by model.
For a Galaxy-specific problem, search Samsung’s support site using the complete model number and software version rather than following a generic settings path. That avoids applying instructions written for a different One UI release or device.
Capture a scrolling page
Android Help says scrolling screenshots are available on Android 12 and up on most screens that allow scrolling. After taking the initial screenshot, look for a control such as Capture more or a scrolling expansion in the preview. The wording and availability are manufacturer-dependent, and protected or non-scrollable screens may not offer it.
- Take the initial screenshot with Power + Volume Down, the Power menu or another supported method.
- Inspect the preview for the scrolling or expanded-capture control.
- Choose how far down the page to extend the image.
- Save or share the resulting long screenshot.
Because the Android Help qualification is “most screens that allow scrolling,” do not assume every app or document supports this feature.

Where the screenshot controls appear afterward
Android normally presents a thumbnail or preview immediately after capture, but the precise behavior varies by manufacturer. Tap that preview to reach the available edit and share actions. If you dismiss it, use the phone’s normal photo or gallery application to locate the saved image; album names and file locations are manufacturer-specific, so follow your model’s support documentation if you cannot find it.
Troubleshooting when no screenshot is taken
The buttons open another function
Press Power and Volume Down at exactly the same time and release quickly. Holding Power first can open the Power menu, while pressing Volume Down too early can change the volume instead. Remove a bulky case temporarily if it prevents either button from registering.
The Power menu has no Screenshot command
That option is not present on every Android build. Use Power + Volume Down, then look up the exact model on the manufacturer’s support site. Do not assume a menu path from another Galaxy or Pixel generation applies to yours.
The Pixel Recent apps button is missing
Confirm that you selected an app card in Overview/Recent apps. Gesture navigation requires swiping up and holding; three-button navigation requires tapping Overview. The documented Pixel workflow may require Android 11 or later, so older software may not show it.

The screenshot is blank or blocked
Some apps and protected content can limit capture. The available guidance does not establish a universal workaround for those restrictions. Try another screen to verify that the phone’s screenshot function works, then check the app or device maker’s documentation.
The scrolling option does not appear
Check that the phone is running Android 12 or later and that the current screen actually scrolls. Even on supported versions, Android describes the feature as available on most qualifying screens rather than all apps.
Voice capture does nothing
Verify that Google Assistant is set up, listening for the phrase you use and available in your language and account configuration. If any of those conditions are uncertain, use the physical-button method instead.

Practical reliability and cost notes
- For a single phone image, the built-in Android methods are immediate and require no account or network connection.
- For website automation, specify a wait condition (selector, delay or network idle) when a page renders after JavaScript, and use full-page capture when content extends below the viewport.
