You do not need the Windows-logo key to capture your screen. Open Snipping Tool with the mouse from Start or Windows search, select New, and choose a rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen snip. If your keyboard has Print Screen (PrtSc), you can also copy the whole screen with that key and paste it with Ctrl+V.
The best method when the Windows key is unavailable
Snipping Tool is built into Windows and can be opened without any keyboard shortcut that uses the Windows button. It is the most flexible choice because you can capture a selected area, one window, or the entire display, then annotate and save the result.
- Use the mouse to open Start.
- Type Snipping Tool in the search box.
- Open the Snipping Tool app.
- Choose New.
- Select the capture mode you need: rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen.
- Drag around the area, click the target window, or let the app capture the full screen.
- Use the editing tools if required, then save the image from Snipping Tool.
This route works when the Windows key is missing, broken, disabled, or difficult to reach. It also avoids capturing unrelated windows when you only need one part of the display.
Choose the Snipping Tool mode
- Rectangular: drag a clean rectangle around a control, dialog, chart, or other area.
- Free-form: outline an irregular shape with the mouse.
- Window: select one open application window.
- Full-screen: capture everything visible on the display.
Use Print Screen without the Windows key
If your keyboard includes Print Screen, press PrtSc by itself. Microsoft describes this as placing a static image of the entire screen in the clipboard. It does not necessarily create a file immediately.

- Arrange the desktop as you want it to appear.
- Press Print Screen (PrtSc).
- Open Paint, Word, an email composer, or another app that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the clipboard image.
- Save or send the pasted image from that application.
This is faster than opening Snipping Tool, but it captures the whole screen. Check the image for private notifications, open documents, or other information before sharing it.
Capture only the active window
To avoid including the rest of the desktop, first click the window you want, then press Alt+Print Screen. The active window image goes to the clipboard.
- Click the title bar or any control in the target window so it has focus.
- Press Alt+Print Screen.
- Switch to Paint, Word, email, or another image-capable app.
- Press Ctrl+V, then save or send the result.
Alt+Print Screen is useful for support tickets and instructions because it excludes unrelated windows. It is not a region-selection tool; use Snipping Tool when you need a custom rectangle.
What if the keyboard has no Print Screen key?
Use the On-Screen Keyboard
Windows includes an On-Screen Keyboard with a clickable PrtSc key. Open it with the mouse through Start or Windows search, then click its Print Screen key and paste the clipboard image with Ctrl+V. Exact menu labels can vary by Windows version.

Connect another keyboard
A USB keyboard with a Print Screen key can provide the missing function. This is optional, not a requirement: Snipping Tool still handles rectangular, window, and full-screen captures without buying hardware.
Check compact-keyboard layers
Some compact keyboards put Print Screen behind a function layer or use a different label. Consult the keyboard’s own layout documentation. If you cannot identify a reliable combination, use Snipping Tool or the On-Screen Keyboard instead of guessing.
Windows tablets: use the hardware buttons
Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance says that Power + Volume Up captures the screen on most Windows tablets. Hardware support is model-dependent, so test the combination on the specific tablet. If it does nothing, open Snipping Tool with touch or a connected mouse and use New.

Clipboard versus a saved image
Print Screen and Alt+Print Screen normally give you an image in the clipboard, not a named file. If you close the destination app before pasting, you may lose the capture. Paste it promptly into Paint, Word, an email, or another image-capable program, then save it in the format and folder you want.

Snipping Tool gives you an editing and saving workflow in one place. That makes it safer for a one-off screenshot that must become a file, while Print Screen is convenient when you already have a document or message open.
Practical checks before sharing a screenshot
- Close or minimize windows that contain passwords, personal messages, or confidential work.
- Check notification popups and the taskbar for information you did not intend to disclose.
- For a support request, capture the error dialog and enough surrounding context to identify the app.
- Use a window snip instead of full screen when the rest of the desktop is irrelevant.
- Open the saved image once to confirm that the expected area is visible and readable.
Troubleshooting
Snipping Tool does not appear in search
Open Start and search again for the exact name Snipping Tool. If search is unavailable, browse the installed apps from Start with the mouse. A managed work computer may restrict built-in apps; contact the administrator if the application is missing or blocked.
Print Screen appears to do nothing
Print Screen places the image in the clipboard, so no window may visibly change. Open Paint or another image-capable app and press Ctrl+V. If nothing pastes, use the On-Screen Keyboard’s PrtSc key or switch to Snipping Tool.
The wrong window was captured
For Alt+Print Screen, click the intended window immediately before pressing the keys. For a more reliable result, use Snipping Tool’s window mode and select the window from the on-screen choices.

The screenshot contains too much of the desktop
Print Screen always targets the entire screen. Use Snipping Tool’s rectangular or window mode, or use Alt+Print Screen for the currently focused window.
Power + Volume Up does not work on a tablet
The button combination depends on the tablet model. Try Snipping Tool with touch, or connect a keyboard and use the other methods. Do not assume every Windows tablet implements the same hardware capture behavior.
The image is missing after copying
The clipboard is temporary and can be replaced by another copy operation. Paste the screenshot before copying something else, then save it from the destination app.
