You do not need a Print Screen (PrtScn) key to capture your display. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, press Windows+Shift+S, choose a capture mode, and select what you want to save. If your device has no PrtScn key, Microsoft also documents Fn+Windows+Space as a hardware-dependent fallback. Mac and Chromebook use different shortcuts, so start with the instructions for your operating system.
Windows 10 and Windows 11: use Snipping Tool
Microsoft’s primary no-PrtScn method is the Snipping Tool overlay. Press Windows+Shift+S to open it, then capture the required part of the screen. Microsoft describes this shortcut as opening an overlay for an image snapshot (Microsoft Support).
Capture a selected area, window, or full screen
- Press Windows+Shift+S. Your screen dims and the Snipping Tool toolbar appears.
- Choose a mode: Rectangular for a box-shaped area, Freeform for an irregular outline, Window for one application window, or Full-screen for every display.
- Complete the selection. A notification opens the capture in Snipping Tool.
- Use the editor to mark up or crop the image, then select Save to choose a file name, format, and location, or use the available sharing controls.
Snipping Tool can automatically save captures to the Screenshots folder. Its settings let you change automatic-save behavior and the default folder (Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions). Check those settings if a capture appears in the editor but not where you expected.
Use the documented no-PrtScn fallback
On a Windows device without a Print Screen key, Microsoft lists Fn+Windows+Space. Depending on your hardware, this saves the screenshot in File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots (Microsoft’s keyboard-shortcut guidance). The combination is not a universal mapping: laptop manufacturers can assign the Fn layer differently. If it does nothing, consult the device maker’s keyboard documentation and use Windows+Shift+S instead.

Which Windows method should you choose?

Mac: use built-in Shift-Command shortcuts
macOS does not use a Print Screen key. Apple’s shortcuts are:
- Shift+Command+3 captures the entire screen.
- Shift+Command+4 turns the pointer into a crosshair so you can drag around an area.
- For a window or menu, press Shift+Command+4, press Space, then click the window or menu.
- Shift+Command+5 opens the Screenshot app on macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. It provides full-screen, window, and selected-area capture, plus timer and save-location controls.
By default, macOS places screenshots on the desktop. In the Screenshot app, select Options to change the destination or configure a timer. Apple notes that some applications, including Apple TV, may prevent screenshots of their windows (Apple Support).
Chromebook: use Show Windows shortcuts
On a Chromebook, the key labeled Show Windows looks like a rectangle with two vertical lines. Google documents these combinations for the standard US English QWERTY layout:
- Ctrl+Show Windows captures the full screen.
- Shift+Ctrl+Show Windows starts a partial-screen selection.
- Ctrl+Shift+Show Windows opens additional screenshot features and the capture toolbar.
- On a Chromebook tablet, press Power+Volume Down.
With an external Windows keyboard, use the Windows key where the Chromebook expects Search or Launcher; with an external Mac keyboard, use Command as Google describes for applicable shortcuts. International layouts can follow the same general instructions, although key labels may differ (Google Chromebook Help).

Find, edit, and share the captured file
Windows
Open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots first. A Windows+Shift+S capture may remain in Snipping Tool until you save it, while automatic saving can place it in the configured Screenshots folder. Use the editor’s copy or share action when you need to paste the image into an email, document, or chat instead of creating a permanent file.
Mac
Look on the desktop unless you changed the Screenshot app’s destination. Double-click the PNG to annotate it in Preview, or Control-click it for sharing options.
Chromebook
Open the Files app and check the Downloads folder, which is the usual destination for local captures. The notification shown after capture also provides a quick way to open or copy the image.
Why a shortcut might not work
The Fn combination does nothing on Windows
Fn behavior is manufacturer-specific. Try Windows+Shift+S, verify that the Fn key is not locked (many laptops toggle an Fn-lock with a function-row key), and check the computer maker’s support documentation. Do not assume Fn+Windows+Space works on every model; Microsoft explicitly qualifies it as hardware-dependent.

The overlay does not appear
Press the Windows key separately to confirm it responds, then retry Windows+Shift+S. If Snipping Tool is unavailable or disabled by an administrator, open Start and search for Snipping Tool. Windows Update and organization policies can change app availability; an administrator may need to restore it.
The image is blank or an app blocks capture
Protected video, remote-desktop sessions, and some applications can intentionally prevent capture. Apple specifically identifies Apple TV as an example of an app that may not allow screenshots. If the application offers its own export or snapshot command, use that instead.
The wrong monitor or window is captured
Use the Window mode and click the intended window, or drag a rectangular selection manually. For multi-monitor setups, verify which display is active before choosing Full-screen.
The file cannot be found
Use the capture notification’s open action, then check the operating system’s configured save location. On Windows, inspect Snipping Tool’s automatic-save settings and Pictures > Screenshots; on Mac, check the desktop or the Screenshot app’s Options menu; on Chromebook, check Files > Downloads.

When an ordinary screenshot is not enough
Built-in shortcuts capture the screen you are viewing. They are not designed for unattended website captures, long pages that require scrolling, or repeatable captures in a build pipeline. For those tasks, a website screenshot API can render a URL on demand and return an image or PDF.

Choosing the right approach
- Use Windows+Shift+S when you are at a Windows computer and need a quick region, window, or full-screen image.
- Use Fn+Windows+Space only when your Windows hardware supports Microsoft’s documented fallback.
- Use Shift-Command shortcuts on a Mac and Ctrl/Show Windows shortcuts on a Chromebook.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot on Windows with no keyboard shortcut at all?
Yes. Open Start, search for Snipping Tool, launch it, and choose a capture mode from its toolbar. The Windows+Shift+S shortcut is simply the fastest way to open the same capture overlay.
Does Windows+Shift+S save the image automatically?
It opens the capture in Snipping Tool. Automatic saving and its destination depend on Snipping Tool settings; use Save in the editor if you need to choose the location immediately.
What is the difference between a screenshot and a screen recording?
A screenshot is one still image. Windows Snipping Tool and the Mac and Chromebook shortcuts described here capture still images; recording requires a separate screen-recording feature.
Why are my Chromebook keys different?
The Show Windows key and keyboard layout vary by device. Google’s published combinations use a US standard English QWERTY layout; international or external keyboards may label the equivalent Search, Launcher, Windows, or Command key differently.
