For a screenshot of a display or application window selected by the user, use Windows.Graphics.Capture: check that capture is supported, show the system picker, create a capture session, then save the selected frame. For repeated desktop frames and GPU-oriented processing, use DXGI Desktop Duplication. For simpler device-context copies, GDI’s BitBlt may be enough; PrintWindow instead asks a window to render into a device context and can block.
Which Windows screenshot API should you use?
Choose based on what you need to capture and how often. The APIs do not have interchangeable behavior: some let the user select a target, some operate on monitors, and one asks the target application to render.
| API | Best fit | Key behavior and caveat |
|---|---|---|
Windows.Graphics.Capture |
A user-selected display or application window; a capture session or snapshot | Uses secure system selection UI and displays a system capture border. Check support and copy only the frame’s ContentSize region. Microsoft’s screen capture guide. |
| DXGI Desktop Duplication | Repeated per-monitor desktop frames, especially when processing on the GPU | Provides dirty and move rectangles, but requires handling monitor rotation, cursor composition, and display or mode changes. Microsoft’s Desktop Duplication API guide. |
GDI BitBlt |
A basic copy between device contexts, such as a desktop image into a compatible bitmap | It copies pixels from a source device context to a destination device context; it does not provide the same picker-driven selection flow. Microsoft’s GDI capture example. |
PrintWindow |
Asking a particular window to render to a destination device context | The owning application handles the request synchronously, so it may not return immediately. Microsoft’s PrintWindow reference. |
For a new desktop app whose user chooses a window or display, start with Windows.Graphics.Capture. The API supports Windows desktop devices and Windows Mixed Reality immersive headsets; GraphicsCaptureSession was introduced in Windows 10 version 1803. Check the class reference for the platform API details.
How to capture a user-selected window or display
The flow is: check availability, invoke the system picker, create a frame pool and session for the selected item, receive a frame, then copy its valid content to your output. Microsoft’s guide documents this capture-item workflow, including frame handling and device-loss considerations. The exact code depends on your app framework and language; use the guide’s framework-specific implementation as the runnable reference rather than treating a short pseudo-example as a complete capture-and-save program.

- Check support. Call
GraphicsCaptureSession.IsSupported(). Capture may be unavailable, including for hardware-related reasons, so do not create a session blindly. - Let the user choose. Call
GraphicsCapturePicker.PickSingleItemAsync(). The system UI lets the user select a display or application window, and Windows draws a yellow border around the active capture item. - Initialize the picker for your framework. In WinUI 3, set the picker’s owner window handle before invoking
PickSingleItemAsync. - Create the capture resources. Use the returned capture item to initialize a frame pool and
GraphicsCaptureSession, then start the session and receive frames as described in the Microsoft screen capture guide. - Save only valid pixels. Copy the rectangle described by the frame’s
ContentSize. The frame surface can contain undefined pixels outside that region. - Handle changes during capture. Respond to item resizing and device loss using the lifecycle steps in the guide; a frame pool sized for an earlier item size should not be assumed to remain correct after a resize.
The picker model is useful when the person at the desktop should decide what the app captures. It is not a silent, arbitrary-window lookup API. The visible border is part of the capture experience, so account for it in your user interface and testing.
Secondary pop-up and tool windows
On Windows 11 version 24H2, GraphicsCaptureSession.IncludeSecondaryWindows can include qualifying secondary windows that intersect the captured top-level window. Its default is false. This is relevant when an app-owned window has a pop-up or tool window that must appear in the same capture; it is not a general promise to include every unrelated window. See the property reference.
When to use Desktop Duplication for repeated frames
DXGI Desktop Duplication is designed for desktop applications that need monitor-oriented frames and update information. It exposes desktop images as DXGI_FORMAT_B8G8R8A8_UNORM, along with dirty rectangles for changed regions and move rectangles for pixels relocated since the prior frame. This makes it useful when an application wants to update only changed regions or process frames in a GPU pipeline, rather than repeatedly treating every capture as a wholly new image. See the Desktop Duplication API documentation and the IDXGIOutputDuplication interface reference.

- One duplication path per active monitor: capture is organized around active monitor boundaries. Treat each monitor’s output separately in multi-monitor layouts.
- Rotation is your responsibility: monitor orientation can affect how the returned image should be interpreted, so handle rotation per output.
- Check pointer composition: the pointer may already be composed into the image, or it may need to be drawn separately.
- Recreate after desktop changes: duplication interfaces become invalid after desktop switches or display-mode changes. Release and recreate them when the desktop image source changes.
This API has a more involved lifecycle than a single picker-driven snapshot. Prefer it when continuous frames and update metadata justify that complexity, not just because the application needs one image.

When GDI BitBlt or PrintWindow is appropriate
BitBlt: copy pixels between device contexts
BitBlt copies image data from a source device context to a destination device context. Microsoft’s example creates a compatible device context and bitmap, copies the desktop into memory, and saves the result. It is a straightforward route for a basic desktop capture in a GDI-based workflow. Follow the resource creation, selection, copying, and cleanup sequence in Microsoft’s Capturing an Image example; a careless bitmap or device-context lifecycle can undermine an otherwise simple copy.
PrintWindow: ask the target app to render
PrintWindow requests that the owning application render its window into a destination device context. It is synchronous, and the time it takes depends on runtime conditions; it might not return immediately. That makes it semantically different from copying the desktop with BitBlt or acquiring a selected item through Windows.Graphics.Capture. The PW_CLIENTONLY flag limits the requested output to the window’s client area. See Microsoft’s function reference.

Practical correctness and reliability checks
- Confirm the API is supported. For
Windows.Graphics.Capture, checkIsSupported()and provide a graceful fallback or explain that capture is unavailable. - Use the actual frame dimensions. Copy the
ContentSizerectangle rather than assuming every pixel in the underlying surface is defined. - Expect size and device changes. Reconfigure frame resources when the captured item resizes, and recover from device loss as shown in Microsoft’s capture guide.
- Test multi-monitor layouts. With Desktop Duplication, account for per-monitor capture, rotation, and whether the cursor is already present.
- Plan for display switches. Recreate DXGI duplication interfaces after a desktop or display-mode change.
- Keep blocking calls in mind. Because
PrintWindowis synchronous, avoid designing a UI flow that assumes it will always return promptly. - Respect the user-visible model. The Graphics Capture picker and active-capture border are part of the documented flow, not incidental details to ignore.

If your goal is a website screenshot rather than a local Windows display or application window, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It is not a replacement for Windows desktop capture APIs; it captures a URL. The request below returns an image response for the requested page:
ScreenshotNeo API documentation
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Equivalent Python and Node.js examples:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

The picker does not open or capture is unsupported
Check GraphicsCaptureSession.IsSupported() before attempting capture. The API can be unavailable, including for hardware-related reasons. In WinUI 3, initialize the picker with the app’s window handle before calling PickSingleItemAsync.
The saved image contains stray or undefined pixels
Use the frame’s ContentSize as the bounds for copying. Do not assume the entire frame surface is meaningful when its content occupies a smaller region.

The captured item changes size or the device is lost
Update capture resources when the item resizes and implement the device-loss recovery flow described in the screen capture guide. A one-time initialization is not enough for a long-running session that must survive those changes.
A multi-monitor image is rotated or the cursor is missing or duplicated
For Desktop Duplication, handle rotation separately for each monitor and determine whether the cursor is included in the captured image before drawing it yourself.

PrintWindow appears to hang
The call is synchronous and may not return immediately because the target application processes the render request. Do not treat it as a guaranteed quick pixel copy; choose a different capture approach if your workflow cannot tolerate that behavior.
Frequently asked questions
Can Windows.Graphics.Capture capture a screenshot, not just video?
Yes. It acquires frames from a display or application window and can be used to save a single frame as a snapshot.
Does Windows.Graphics.Capture require the user to pick a target?
The documented flow uses the system picker so the user selects the display or application window. The active item receives a visible system border.
Which API should I use for a single window snapshot?
For a user-selected window, use Windows.Graphics.Capture. Use PrintWindow when the intended behavior is to ask a specific window’s owner to render into a device context and you can account for its synchronous behavior.
