For most Windows screenshots, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, select a region, window, or full-screen mode, and then use the Snipping Tool notification to copy, edit, or save the image. For a full-screen image copied immediately to the clipboard, press Print Screen. To save the entire screen directly as a file, press Windows logo key + PrtScn; Windows normally stores it in PicturesScreenshots.
The quickest way to capture a selected area
Windows logo key + Shift + S is the practical default when you need part of the screen, a single window, or a full-screen snip. Microsoft documents this shortcut for both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- When the Snipping Tool overlay appears, choose a mode if necessary: rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- For a rectangular or freeform snip, drag around the area you want. For a window snip, select the window. A full-screen snip captures all displays shown by the tool.
- Use the notification or Snipping Tool window that appears. From there you can annotate, crop, copy, share, or save the capture.
The shortcut initially places the capture in the Snipping Tool workflow and clipboard. It does not require a separate screenshot program.

Copy the entire screen to the clipboard
Press Print Screen (also labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or a similar abbreviation), then open the destination app and press Ctrl + V. The destination can be an email, document, chat, presentation, or image editor.

Print Screen behavior is configurable. On some Windows systems, pressing it opens the screen-snipping overlay instead of silently copying the full screen. To inspect that setting, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and look for Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. The exact label or placement can vary by Windows version. If the overlay appears, use it to select the desired capture or change the setting if you specifically need the old clipboard-only behavior.
A clipboard capture is not necessarily a file on disk. If you need a permanent image, paste it into an image editor and save it, or use the direct-to-file shortcut below.
Capture only the active window
- Click the window you want so it is active.
- Press Alt + Print Screen.
- Switch to the destination application and press Ctrl + V.
This is useful for documenting an application without including the taskbar, desktop, or other windows. The result goes to the clipboard, so save it from the destination app if you need a file.
Save a full-screen screenshot directly
Press Windows logo key + PrtScn. The screen may briefly dim, and Windows saves the image without requiring a paste step. Open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots to find it.
Some compact keyboards, laptops, and detachable keyboards do not have a dedicated PrtScn key. Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on applicable devices. Keyboard firmware differs, so consult the instructions for the exact laptop, keyboard, or Surface model if that combination does nothing.

Use Snipping Tool when you need editing or controlled timing
Snipping Tool supports rectangular, freeform, window, and full-screen image captures. After the snip opens in the editor, you can mark it up, crop it, copy it, share it, or save it with a chosen name and location.
Save a capture manually
- Take the snip with Windows + Shift + S or open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Open the resulting notification or editor.
- Select the Save control, choose a filename and folder, and confirm the format offered by your version of the tool.
Understand automatic saving
Current Microsoft guidance describes automatic saving to a Screenshots folder, while also providing a Save command and settings that can change automatic-save behavior or the default folder. If a capture is not where you expect, open Snipping Tool’s settings and check both the automatic-save option and the configured Screenshots location. Do not assume that every Windows build uses the same folder or save behavior.
Capture a menu or tooltip with a delay
Menus often disappear when you press a shortcut. In Snipping Tool, choose a short Delay, start the snip, and open the menu during the countdown. When the delay ends, select the menu as part of the capture.

For a short demonstration, use Snipping Tool’s video feature or press Windows + Shift + R. Select the area to record, stop when finished, and save the clip. Microsoft also documents opening the recording in Clipchamp for further editing. Use a still screenshot when a single state is enough; use a video snip when the sequence of clicks or changing content matters.
Fix common screenshot problems
Print Screen opens an overlay
This normally means the Print Screen accessibility setting is enabled. Check Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and the option that uses Print Screen to open screen snipping. You can also complete the capture from the overlay itself.

There is no PrtScn key
Try Fn + Windows + Space Bar if your hardware supports Microsoft’s documented alternative. On Surface and other specialized keyboards, the required function layer can differ; use the device-specific keyboard instructions rather than assuming the same combination works everywhere.
The image is in the clipboard, but no file exists
Print Screen and Alt + Print Screen are clipboard workflows. Paste with Ctrl + V into an app, then use that app’s Save command. Alternatively, use Windows + PrtScn for direct file output or save the capture from Snipping Tool.

Check Snipping Tool’s settings and distinguish between a clipboard capture, a manually saved snip, and a Windows + PrtScn capture. Automatic-save behavior and the default folder can be changed, and a manually saved image goes wherever you selected.
A menu vanished before capture
Use Snipping Tool’s Delay option. Start the countdown, open the menu, and let the timer finish before selecting the capture.
A shortcut does nothing
Check whether your keyboard requires the Fn layer, whether another application has remapped the key, and whether the Windows key is disabled by a hardware gaming-mode switch. If only Print Screen fails, use Windows + Shift + S and save from Snipping Tool.

Practical workflow and privacy checks
- For a quick message: use Print Screen or Alt + Print Screen, then paste directly.
- For documentation: use Windows + Shift + S, add annotations, and save with a descriptive filename.
- For repeatable full-screen files: use Windows + PrtScn and review the Screenshots folder afterward.
- Before sharing: inspect the image for passwords, personal messages, account numbers, notifications, and browser tabs that were outside your intended region.
- For a specific application: activate that window first and use Alt + Print Screen, or choose Window snip to avoid surrounding content.
