Method 1: Capture a website manually and upload it
Capture the page at a readable size
- Open the target URL in your browser and wait until the content you want is visible. If a cookie dialog, newsletter form or chat widget obscures the page, dismiss or close it before capturing.
- Set the browser zoom and window size so text remains legible at the width where the image will appear in your post. For developer tools, enlarge the tool text before taking the shot.
- On macOS, press Shift–Command–3 for the entire screen. Press Shift–Command–5 to select an area or window and to access recording controls. Windows and Linux provide comparable built-in Snipping Tool or screenshot commands; use an area or window capture when the entire desktop would add irrelevant information.
- Crop away browser tabs, bookmarks, personal notifications and unrelated applications. Add arrows or boxes only where they clarify the action, and use a high-contrast color.
- Replace names, email addresses, customer records, logos or other private information with generic test data before publishing.
Upload through the Media Library
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Media → Add New and drop the image into the upload area, or click Select Files.
- Open the uploaded file’s attachment details and set descriptive Alt Text. Describe the state or action shown, such as “WordPress dashboard showing Media → Add New with a website screenshot selected,” rather than writing “screenshot.”
- Edit the post or page, insert an Image block, choose Media Library, and select the capture.
- Use the block settings to select an appropriate display size. Keep enough width for text to be read; provide a wider context image before a zoomed detail when both are needed.
- Add a caption or nearby paragraph if readers need the URL, date, viewport or other context. Do not place sensitive source data in the caption.
Method 2: Use the Browser Screenshots plugin
Browser Screenshots uses WordPress.com’s mShots service. Its documented shortcode is:

Install and activate the plugin from Plugins → Add New, then insert a Shortcode block where the image should appear. Replace the URL and width with your values. The plugin also documents height, alt, link, target, class, image_class, display_link and post_links attributes. For theme code, its documented PHP method is BrowserShots::get_shot(url, width, height).

This is a low-setup option for non-commercial use according to the plugin documentation. The rendered image remains on WordPress.com servers rather than being saved to your own site, and the service caches it for approximately 24 hours. That storage model matters if the page contains confidential information or if you need a permanent local copy.
Method 3: Use an API-backed WordPress screenshot plugin

Install the plugin, create an Urlbox account, and obtain its API key and secret. After activation, configure them at Settings → Urlbox. Add a Shortcode block such as:

The repository documents width, height, thumbnail width, CSS classes and other Urlbox API options in settings or shortcode attributes. Treat the account credentials and the provider’s retention policy as production data: restrict dashboard access and avoid placing keys in publicly visible post content.

When a shortcode is processed, the target URL, capture parameters and API credentials are sent to the external Capture service. Add a privacy notice when your site or source page contains personal or regulated information.
Tida URL Screenshot
Tida adds a [tida_screenshot] shortcode and can capture custom post types. Its provider selector lists Abstract API, ApiFlash, JSONLink, Microlink, ScreenshotLayer, ScreenshotMachine, ScreenshotOne and Thum.io. You obtain an API key from the provider you choose. Check the selected provider’s current pricing, quotas and availability before relying on it for a publishing workflow.
Full-page screenshots: what to check
- Lazy-loaded media: a viewport capture may omit images that load only while scrolling. Use a full-page option that scrolls or otherwise loads lazy content.
- Dynamic sections: wait for a selector, a fixed delay or network idle before capturing. A screenshot taken too early can show skeletons or blank cards.
- Responsive layout: record the viewport width and height so another editor can reproduce the result. A mobile capture and a desktop capture are different documents, not interchangeable crops.
- Sticky headers: verify that fixed navigation has not been repeated over every full-page segment.
- Long pages: consider a PDF when readers need to print or search the complete document; use an image when visual comparison is the goal.

Accessibility and publishing checklist
- Check the image at its actual article display width, not only at full resolution.
- Show a wide context image before a detail crop when orientation matters.
- Enlarge small interface text before capture instead of expecting readers to zoom indefinitely.
- Use annotations sparingly and with strong contrast.
- Remove personal, client and business information; use generic test data for demonstrations.
- Write meaningful alt text that explains the relevant page state or action.
- For third-party rendering, disclose where the image is stored or which service receives the URL and capture parameters.
Troubleshooting common failures
The shortcode displays text instead of an image
Confirm that the shortcode is inside a WordPress Shortcode block, the plugin is active, and the brackets and attribute quotes are intact. A security or caching plugin can also strip shortcodes; test in a staging post and review its exclusions.

The capture is blank or incomplete
Check the URL in a normal browser first. Increase the service’s delay or wait for a specific selector, and use full-page mode for lazy-loaded content. Pages protected by bot checks or login walls may not render without the required headers, cookies or authorization.
Text is unreadably small
Increase the viewport or thumbnail width, capture the relevant element instead of the whole page, and place a detail image below the context shot. Do not solve legibility by publishing a giant image that breaks mobile layouts.
The image is stale
Browser Screenshots may serve its approximately 24-hour cache. For API services, review cache and TTL settings, then request a fresh capture after the source page changes.
Privacy or compliance is a concern
Prefer a local manual capture for confidential material, redact before upload, and read the selected provider’s data handling terms. For Capture, remember that the plugin sends the URL, parameters and credentials to its external service during processing.
FAQ
Can WordPress automatically screenshot any URL?
Yes. A screenshot plugin can call a rendering service when a shortcode is processed; an API can also generate images outside the editor. Access restrictions, dynamic loading and provider limits still apply.
Should I use PNG, JPEG or WebP?
Use the format your workflow requires: PNG preserves interface text and transparency, JPEG is suitable for photographic pages, and WebP often provides a smaller modern web image. Confirm that your WordPress media and caching stack serves the chosen format correctly.
Can a screenshot replace accessible page content?
No. Keep important text and instructions as real HTML. A screenshot is a visual supplement, so provide accurate alt text and a written explanation of any action readers must take.
