For a one-off screenshot, sign in to the site in your browser, open the protected page, and capture it there. For repeatable captures, use Playwright: log in through the site’s normal flow, save the authenticated browser state securely, restore it in later runs, and take a viewport, element, or full-page screenshot.
Choose a manual capture or an automated workflow
Manual capture is simplest when you need one image and can sign in interactively, including any multifactor authentication (MFA) or consent step. Automation is a better fit for recurring reports, test evidence, or capturing many pages: Playwright can reuse a saved browser context, but you must protect that state because it can grant access to the account.

Only capture pages you are authorized to access. Before sharing an image, check whether it exposes account details, personal information, or other content that should remain private.
Take a screenshot manually in Firefox
- Sign in through the website’s normal login page. Complete any MFA, consent, or other required steps.
- Open the exact protected URL and verify the member-only content is visible. If you see a login screen or an access error, do not capture yet.
- In Firefox, right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS. Choose the visible area or the entire page. Firefox’s screenshot instructions describe the available choices.
- For a single page element, open Developer Tools, select it in the Inspector, and choose Screenshot Node. If you need the full-page screenshot control in Developer Tools, enable it in the Developer Tools settings. Mozilla documents these options in its Developer Tools screenshot guide.
- Open the saved image and inspect it. Look for clipped sticky headers, content that did not load below the fold, consent banners, and sensitive account data.
Choose what to capture
- Visible area: Choose this when the current screen is the evidence you need or when keeping the image small matters.
- Entire page: Choose this to show content below the fold. Check the resulting image for sections that load only after scrolling.
- One element: Choose this for a chart, table, dialog, or other specific component. It limits unrelated page content, but verify that the complete element appears in the image.
Automate authenticated screenshots with Playwright
Playwright’s recommended pattern is to authenticate once, save browser state, and load that state in later runs. The state can contain cookies and headers that allow someone to act as the account, so keep it out of source control and restrict access to it. See Playwright’s authentication guidance.

Install Playwright in your project with npm install -D playwright, then install its Chromium browser with npx playwright install chromium. The following TypeScript example assumes the login form has accessible labels named “Username” and “Password,” and a button whose name matches “Sign in.” Replace the example URLs and selectors with the site’s actual values. Store credentials in environment variables rather than writing them into the file.

}The post-login URL and signed-in text are examples, not universal selectors. Pick a signal that only appears after successful authentication. Some sites require an interactive MFA step or a different login flow; do not try to bypass the site’s access controls. For a site that does not expose a suitable text marker, wait for a stable locator that confirms the protected content has loaded.
Restore saved state in a later run
After authenticating and saving state, a separate capture run can create a context from that file. Check for a post-login marker after opening the protected page so an expired session does not silently produce a screenshot of the login screen.

Capture a viewport, element, or full page
Use page.screenshot() for the visible viewport, page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) for the full scrollable page, or a locator screenshot for one element. For example:

Handle page loading and dynamic content
A successful login does not guarantee every protected component is ready to capture. Wait for a meaningful post-login URL or signed-in control, then for the particular content you need. If a page fills sections only as they approach the viewport, a full-page screenshot may need extra time or a deliberate scroll through the page so those sections render. Verify the saved image rather than assuming that navigation completion means every image or widget has loaded.
For an element capture, wait directly for that element instead of relying only on a fixed delay. A fixed timeout may be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. If a site uses a dialog or transient loading state, wait for the expected stable state before capturing.

Protect login state and account data
- Add the authentication directory to
.gitignore, for exampleplaywright/.auth/, and do not commit the state file. - Limit access to the file and avoid putting it in public artifacts, shared logs, or screenshots. Cookies and headers in browser state may let another person impersonate the account.
- Use a dedicated, least-privilege test account when that is available and appropriate. Avoid capturing real customer or personal data unless you have permission and a secure handling plan.
- Delete or rotate saved state if it is exposed, and sign in again when the session expires.
- Review the final image before sending or publishing it; a crop or element capture may reduce exposure but does not guarantee that sensitive information is absent.
Troubleshoot common failures
The screenshot shows the login page
The saved session may have expired, the login redirect may still be in progress, or the state may not apply to the protected page’s domain. Re-authenticate, wait for a reliable post-login URL or signed-in marker, and verify protected content before saving the screenshot. Playwright’s authentication guide uses a final URL or signed-in control as a confirmation signal: Authentication in Playwright.
Part of the page is missing
For content below the fold, use full-page capture. If the site lazy-loads sections or images, allow them to render—scrolling through the page before capture may be necessary. For one component, target and wait for its locator. Compare the image with the page itself before sharing it.
A site that uses session storage appears signed out
Playwright notes that session storage is domain-specific and is not persisted automatically with the usual storage state. If the application relies on it, you may need to export and restore it with an initialization script; follow the site’s and Playwright’s applicable guidance rather than assuming that a saved storage-state file includes it. The site uses HTTP Basic Authentication
For an interactive code-generation workflow, Playwright documents the --http-credentials option. Use the credentials required by the site and keep them out of shell history or shared logs where practical. Details are in the Playwright codegen documentation.

The script cannot find a login field or button
The example’s accessible names may differ from the site’s labels. Inspect the actual page and update getByLabel() or getByRole() to match its accessible interface. If the site changes its login page, update the locator and verify that the script still confirms successful sign-in before capturing.
The image includes an unwanted banner or sensitive detail
Check the capture scope and page state before saving. Close a banner only if the site permits it and doing so does not alter the evidence you need. Use an element capture or crop when appropriate, but inspect the resulting file for account identifiers and private data.

The methods here capture a page you are authorized to access after authentication; they do not bypass a login or access control.
Can I capture just one chart or table instead of the whole page?
Yes. Firefox Inspector offers Screenshot Node, and Playwright can take a screenshot of a matched locator.
