Use page.authenticate() before navigation only when the page is protected by HTTP authentication—a browser-native username and password challenge. For a website login form, use its authorized sign-in flow or an authorized session instead. In either case, confirm that the expected protected content has loaded before calling page.screenshot(); a completed navigation alone does not prove you are signed in.
Identify the kind of password protection
Puppeteer’s Page.authenticate() supplies credentials for HTTP authentication. It is not a general-purpose way to fill in a username and password form rendered inside a website.
| What you see | Use | What confirms success |
|---|---|---|
| A browser-native credentials challenge before the page loads | Call page.authenticate() with the authorized username and password before page.goto(). |
A site-specific element that appears only on the authenticated page. |
| A login form within the website or an identity provider | Follow the site’s normal authorized login flow, or load an authorized session. | Expected protected-page content, not merely a closed login form or completed navigation. |
Capture a page protected by HTTP authentication
This ES module example uses environment variables for the credentials and target URL. Replace the readiness selector with a stable element that identifies the protected content on the site you are authorized to access.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
// Set credentials before navigating to an HTTP-authenticated page.
await page.authenticate({
username: process.env.PAGE_USERNAME,
password: process.env.PAGE_PASSWORD,
});
const response = await page.goto(process.env.PAGE_URL, {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
});
if (response && !response.ok()) {
throw new Error(`Navigation returned HTTP ${response.status()}`);
}
// Replace with a selector present only when the protected content is ready.
await page.waitForSelector('[data-page-ready="true"]', { visible: true });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'protected-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Install Puppeteer in your project and set PAGE_USERNAME, PAGE_PASSWORD, and PAGE_URL in the process environment or a secret store before running the script. Do not put credentials directly in source code or commit them. The example saves a full-page PNG; omit fullPage: true for a viewport capture, or use another supported screenshot format and options as needed. See Puppeteer’s screenshots guide and Page API.

Sign in when the page uses a website form
Use the site’s normal authorized sign-in process. The right selectors and steps depend on the application: forms may redirect to an identity provider, require multifactor authentication (MFA), or use anti-automation controls. There is no universal Puppeteer login sequence that safely covers those differences.
- Complete the site’s approved sign-in flow with an authorized account or test account.
- If login redirects to the protected page, wait for that navigation. When a click triggers navigation, register the navigation wait and click together with
Promise.all()so the event is not missed. - If needed, navigate to the intended protected URL after sign-in.
- Wait for a stable, visible selector that identifies the expected protected content, then take the screenshot.
Checking that a login form disappeared can help, but it is not enough by itself: a redirect, expired session, or error page can also make the form disappear. Check for a protected-page heading, content region, or other site-specific success marker. Puppeteer documents waitForSelector(); the application determines which selector actually proves that login succeeded.

Reuse an authorized session carefully
If the site permits reusing a session, use the Browser or BrowserContext cookie APIs appropriate to the Puppeteer version installed in your project. The current Page API documentation marks page-level cookie methods deprecated and points to Browser or BrowserContext methods. Keep cookie values and any persisted browser profile private: they are authentication secrets. Never log or publish them.

- Wait for protected content: Prefer a visible, site-specific selector over a generic delay. A durable selector tied to the authenticated view is less likely to mistake a loading screen or redirect for success.
- Use network idle selectively: Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates
waitUntil: 'networkidle2'as one possible navigation wait. It can be unsuitable for pages with long-lived connections, and network idle does not establish that authentication worked. - Capture the intended area:
page.screenshot({ path: 'protected-page.png', fullPage: true })captures beyond the viewport. For a single component, the guide also documentsElementHandle.screenshot(). - Protect sensitive output: Avoid including password fields, tokens, or other secrets in a screenshot that will be shared. Capture only the necessary element when appropriate.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The browser credentials challenge remains or authentication fails. | The page may use a website form rather than HTTP authentication, or the credentials or host are incorrect. | Confirm the type of challenge, check the authorized credentials and target host, and set page.authenticate() before navigation. Use the website’s login flow for a form. |
| The screenshot shows a login page, redirect, or access-denied response. | Navigation completed without reaching the authenticated content. | Check the response status and final URL where appropriate, then wait for a selector that confirms the intended protected content. |
| The capture is incomplete or shows a loading state. | The page has not finished rendering the content you need. | Wait for a page-specific ready marker or visible content selector. Consider network idle only if the page’s connections allow it. |
| Navigation never reaches network idle. | Long-lived connections or other ongoing network activity may prevent an idle condition. | Use a site-specific readiness selector instead of relying on network idle as the only wait. |
| Authentication makes capture slower. | Puppeteer documents that Page.authenticate() enables request interception behind the scenes, which may affect performance. |
Use it only when the target requires HTTP authentication, and account for the documented interception overhead. |
| Login requires MFA or an external identity provider. | The authentication flow is specific to the site or provider. | Follow the approved provider flow with an authorized test account or session. Puppeteer’s cited API documentation does not promise automatic handling of a site’s MFA behavior. |

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; its capture options include full-page screenshots, selector-based element capture, and custom headers, cookies, and authorization. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, with each step optional. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer’s page.authenticate() fill in a website login form?
No. It is documented for HTTP authentication challenges. A form-based login requires the site’s normal authorized sign-in flow or an authorized session.
Can I use networkidle2 to verify that login succeeded?
No. It can be a navigation wait strategy, but it does not prove that authenticated content loaded.
