To screenshot a page on Windows 10 or 11, press Windows logo key + Shift + S, choose a capture mode, then select the page area you want. The image is copied to your clipboard and opens in Snipping Tool, where you can edit, save, or share it. For a screenshot of the entire display, use Snipping Tool’s Full screen mode or press Print Screen to copy a screen snapshot.
These Windows methods capture what is visible on screen. They do not automatically scroll a long webpage to capture content below the browser viewport.
Choose the right Windows screenshot method
The best method depends on what you want in the image: part of a webpage, a whole browser window, everything visible on the display, or an irregular area. For a quick selection, use Windows + Shift + S. For a delayed capture, such as a menu that closes when you click elsewhere, use Snipping Tool’s Delay option.

Snipping Tool supports these capture types on Windows 10 and Windows 11, according to Microsoft’s documentation. The available output and controls differ by method: for example, Print Screen copies an image, while Windows + Shift + R starts a recording rather than taking a still screenshot.

Capture part of a webpage with Windows + Shift + S
Use this shortcut when you want only a particular section of a page, rather than the whole browser window or display.
- Open the webpage and position it so the content you want is visible.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen dims and the capture overlay appears.
- Choose a capture mode from the overlay: rectangular, window, full screen, or freeform.
- For a rectangular snip, drag around the page content. For window mode, select the window. For freeform mode, draw around the irregular area.
- Open the captured snip in Snipping Tool to mark it up, save it, or share it. The capture is also copied to the clipboard, so you can paste it into an image editor or document.
If the overlay opens but you do not see the mode you want, check the icons on the capture bar before selecting the area. You can change mode before making the capture; if you select the wrong area, take another snip rather than trying to reshape the original capture.
Take a screenshot of one window or the full display
Capture a single window
- Open Snipping Tool from the Windows Start menu.
- Choose Window as the snip mode.
- Select New.
- Click the window you want to capture.
Window mode is useful for capturing an individual application window or dialog without manually drawing around it. Make sure the target window is available to select before starting the snip.
Capture the entire screen
In Snipping Tool, choose Full screen and start a new snip. This captures the entire display visible to Windows. Alternatively, press Print Screen to take a static snapshot of the entire screen and copy it to the clipboard. Paste that image into an editor or document if you want to save it from there.

A full-screen capture includes more than the webpage itself if other content is visible on the display. If you want just the browser or a portion of the page, use Window or rectangular snip mode instead.
Capture an irregular area
Choose Freeform in Snipping Tool when a rectangle would include unwanted material around the subject. Select New, then draw around the object or area to capture it.
Capture a menu or tooltip before it disappears
Opening a snipping overlay can require a click that closes a menu or tooltip. Use Snipping Tool’s delay to give yourself time to open the transient item after the capture countdown starts.
- Open Snipping Tool and select Delay.
- Choose a delay from 1 to 5 seconds.
- Choose the snip mode and select New.
- During the countdown, open the menu or move the pointer to reveal the tooltip you need.
- When the screen dims, select the area to capture.
If the menu closes before the screen dims, try a longer delay. If the capture begins before you can reach the menu, repeat the process and adjust the delay or prepare the page so the target is easier to open quickly.

Edit, save, and find the screenshot
A captured snip opens in Snipping Tool. Microsoft documents tools for pen and highlighter marks, shapes, erasing, cropping, text extraction, undo, and redo. Use these controls when you need to point something out, trim the capture, or extract text from an image.
Microsoft says captured snips are automatically saved in the Screenshots folder. Snipping Tool Settings can change automatic saving behavior or the folder. To create a copy with a chosen filename and location, use Save as. A Print Screen capture, by contrast, is copied to the clipboard; paste it into an image editor or document and save it there.
If you cannot find an image, check whether it was a Snipping Tool snip or a Print Screen clipboard capture. For a snip, check Snipping Tool’s save settings and the configured Screenshots folder. For a clipboard capture, paste it into an application and save the file.

- Select a rectangular region to record.
- Choose Start in the overlay.
- Choose Stop when you are finished.
Microsoft’s shortcut reference says the recording is automatically saved by default as an MP4 in VideosScreen Recordings. This is a video capture, not a screenshot; use a still-image snip when you need a single frame.

Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
Windows + Shift + S does not open the capture overlay
Use Snipping Tool from the Start menu as the direct alternative: choose the capture mode, select New, then take the snip. If the laptop keyboard makes the shortcut awkward, this method also avoids relying on the physical Print Screen key.
Print Screen does not save a file where expected
Print Screen takes a static image snapshot and places it on the clipboard. Paste it into an image editor or document, then save it. If you want Snipping Tool instead when pressing Print Screen, Microsoft documents a setting at Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard to configure the key to open screen snipping.
The screenshot includes too much of the display
Use rectangular mode to select only the page section you need, or Window mode to capture a single browser window. Full-screen capture includes the entire display visible to Windows.
The menu disappears before the capture
Use Snipping Tool’s Delay setting and choose a 1–5 second countdown. Start the snip first, then open the menu during the countdown so it is visible when the screen dims.
The screenshot does not include the rest of a long webpage
The Windows capture methods documented here capture visible screen content, a window, a selected region, or the full display; they do not document an automatic scrolling capture of a webpage beyond the visible viewport. To include more content in a manual snip, scroll the page and take additional captures. For an automatically captured webpage image, use a browser-specific scrolling capture feature or a webpage screenshot service rather than expecting Windows’ standard snip modes to stitch the page.
Print Screen is missing or requires another key
Some laptop keyboards place Print Screen behind an Fn layer or omit a dedicated key. Use Windows + Shift + S to open the capture overlay without depending on a physical Print Screen key.

Which method should you use?
- For a fast crop of a webpage, use Windows + Shift + S and rectangular mode.
- For a browser window or dialog, use Snipping Tool’s Window mode.
- For everything visible on the display, use Full screen or Print Screen.
- For a menu or tooltip, use Delay and open it during the countdown.
- For a short moving demonstration, use Windows + Shift + R.
- For a webpage capture that must include content beyond the visible browser area, use a separate scrolling-capture method; standard Windows snips do not document that behavior.
