Use your device’s built-in screenshot control, but treat a login screen as sensitive. Capture only the area needed, then remove passwords, PINs, one-time codes, recovery details, usernames, and notifications before sharing. Some authentication windows intentionally block screenshots; a blank result can be a security feature rather than a fault.
Choose the method by platform and screen state
The correct method depends on whether you are looking at a normal, logged-in desktop or a pre-login authentication window. Also check whether the operating system or app permits capture, what portion you need, and where the image will be saved.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture a login form in a browser or app
- Leave the password and code fields empty, or replace sensitive values with harmless test text.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The Snipping Tool overlay offers rectangular, freeform, window, and full-screen modes.
- Drag around the login panel or choose the window mode. The result is copied to the clipboard.
- Select the notification or open Snipping Tool to save, crop, annotate, and redact the image.
For a full-screen image, Print Screen (PrtSc) copies the screen to the clipboard. Alt+Print Screen copies the active window. Windows+PrtScn captures the entire screen and saves it in the PicturesScreenshots folder.
Show the Windows sign-in screen
Press Windows+L to lock the computer and display the sign-in screen. Access then requires the configured password, PIN, or Windows Hello biometric. Because this screen is outside the normal logged-in desktop workflow, capture support can depend on keyboard focus, hardware, and organizational policy. Try the documented shortcut only if it is allowed. If it does not work, photograph the display with another device and keep the frame tight so it excludes nearby paperwork and other screens.

Windows troubleshooting
- Nothing appears after Windows+Shift+S: check that the keyboard is connected, press Esc, unlock the desktop if necessary, and try again. A policy may disable capture at the sign-in boundary.
- The image is in the wrong place: clipboard captures are not files until you paste them into an image editor or save them from Snipping Tool; Windows+PrtScn uses PicturesScreenshots.
- The screen is black: protected video, a secure desktop, or an application policy may be preventing capture. Do not enter real credentials to test it.
iPhone and iPad
Face ID models
- Quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner.
- Crop to the message or error, use Markup to obscure identifiers, and tap Done to save it in Photos.
Home-button models
- Quickly press and release the side button and Home button together.
- Open the thumbnail, crop or mark up the relevant area, and save it in Photos.
Before sending the image, remove notification previews, account identifiers, recovery codes, and any other accounts visible around the login panel. A screenshot can retain readable small text even after it is displayed at a reduced size.
Mac
Capture a logged-in desktop login page
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app controls.
- Choose the entire screen, a window, or a selected portion.
- Capture the page, then open the resulting file and crop or redact sensitive details before sharing.
FileVault and the macOS login window
The documented Screenshot app workflow applies to the logged-in Mac desktop. It does not promise that the pre-login FileVault or macOS login window accepts the same shortcut. If the shortcut fails there, use an external camera with a narrow angle and do not include nearby documents, other screens, or the password field contents.
Android
Why an Android login screenshot may be blank
Android apps can set the FLAG_SECURE window flag. This tells Android not to allow screenshots or to display the window on a non-secure display such as casting. Protected activities commonly include user logins and online purchases. A blank capture is therefore often intentional security behavior, not a broken screenshot utility.
What to do instead
- Do not try to bypass the protection or install an untrusted capture tool.
- Ask the service for an approved export or support procedure.
- Capture a non-sensitive error message, if the app permits it, without including credentials.
Android lock-screen steps vary by manufacturer. A device may use a PIN, pattern, password, or fingerprint, so consult the device maker’s instructions for the exact button combination.

Redact a login screenshot safely
- Never include a password, PIN, one-time code, recovery code, QR sign-in code, or security answer.
- Crop out usernames, email addresses, account numbers, notification previews, and unrelated accounts.
- Inspect the image at full resolution; shrinking an image does not reliably make text unreadable.
- Create a redacted copy for a support ticket and retain the original only in a controlled location when it is genuinely required.
- Use an approved support workflow or an external camera when the platform blocks capture. Do not defeat a security control.
When a browser login page is the thing you need to document
If you are documenting a public login page for a design review or test environment, use a test account and a URL that contains no live credentials. Browser automation can capture a page consistently, but it must still respect consent prompts, bot checks, and application security.

Common problems and safe fixes
The capture is completely black or blank
On Android, check for FLAG_SECURE. On desktop, the secure sign-in boundary, protected video, remote-desktop policy, or application policy may be responsible. Use an approved export, a non-sensitive error view, or an external camera rather than bypassing protection.
The screenshot includes too much confidential information
Retake it with a region or window selection. If you already captured it, edit a copy, cover each sensitive field with an opaque block, save, close, and reopen the file to verify that the redaction is not merely a translucent annotation.
A shortcut does not respond
Confirm that the device is unlocked when the target is a normal desktop page, check keyboard focus and hardware, and try the platform’s alternate shortcut. At a pre-login screen, policy restrictions may be the expected behavior.

The browser capture shows a consent banner or popup

- Identify the platform and whether it is a logged-in desktop or pre-login screen.
- Decide whether you need the full screen, a window, or only the error region.
- Use a test account or leave credential fields empty.
- Capture with the built-in control where the OS permits it.
- Crop and redact at full resolution.

Can I screenshot a password field safely?
Only if the field is empty or contains harmless test text. Never share an image containing a real password, PIN, token, or recovery code.
Why does Android allow some login screenshots but not others?
Screenshot permission is controlled by the app window. An app using Android’s FLAG_SECURE can make captures blank, while another app may permit them.
Where is my Windows screenshot saved?
Clipboard captures must be pasted or saved from Snipping Tool. Windows+PrtScn saves the full screen in PicturesScreenshots.
