Most devices capture a screenshot in their own default format, then let you convert it to JPEG afterward. Take the screenshot with your device’s built-in shortcut, open it in an image app, and choose Save As or Export with JPEG/JPG selected. Don’t just rename a PNG or HEIC file to .jpg: that does not convert its image data.
Choose JPEG only when you need it
JPEG and JPG refer to the same image format. Use it when a website, form, or recipient explicitly requires JPEG, or rejects PNG or HEIF/HEIC. JPEG uses lossy compression, so saving a screenshot as JPEG can introduce artifacts around small text and sharp interface edges. For crisp text, exact pixel fidelity, or continued editing, keep the original PNG when possible. If your Apple workflow and destination both support HEIF/HEIC, there may be no need to convert that image either.
JPEG files are often smaller than lossless PNG files at comparable dimensions, but the result depends on what the screenshot contains and the quality setting used for export. There is no fixed size reduction that applies to every screenshot.
Take and convert a screenshot on Windows
Capture the screen
- Press Windows logo key + PrtScn to capture the screen. Windows saves the screenshot in Pictures > Screenshots. If your keyboard has no PrtScn key, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on applicable hardware.
- For a selected area or window, press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool. Choose rectangular, free-form, window, or full-screen capture. The capture is copied to the clipboard and appears in Snipping Tool, where you can edit, save, or share it.

Save it as JPEG
Open the saved screenshot in Paint, Photos, or another installed image editor. Use that app’s Save As or Export command, select JPEG or JPG as the file type, choose a destination, and save. Menu wording varies by app and version. If you used Snipping Tool, save the capture first if needed, then open it in an editor that offers JPEG export.

Capture the screen
Use a built-in macOS screenshot shortcut or open the Screenshot utility to capture the full screen or the area you need. The exact options and saved-file behavior can vary with macOS version and settings. If the resulting file is PNG, that is normal; you can export a copy in another format afterward.
Export as JPEG in Preview
- Open the screenshot in Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- Select JPEG in the format menu, choose a filename and destination, and save. If a quality control appears, raise it for cleaner text edges or lower it if reducing file size is more important.
Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit documentation says its capture output can be saved as HEIC, JPEG, or PNG. That framework capability does not mean every built-in screenshot workflow saves JPEG directly by default; exporting the captured image is a straightforward route when the utility produces PNG.
Take and convert a screenshot on iPhone or iPad
Capture and find the screenshot
On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together. On Touch ID models, use the side or top button with the Home button, as applicable to the model. Apple’s screenshot instructions cover the device combinations and finding screenshots in Photos under Collections > Media Types > Screenshots.

Apple documents that screenshots use PNG, while screen recordings use HEVC. In HDR mode, screenshots use HEIF. The actual format therefore depends in part on the capture mode.
Make a JPEG copy
Open the screenshot in Photos or an image editor and use an export, save-copy, or share workflow that offers JPEG. The exact control depends on the app; if Photos does not expose the format choice you need, use an editor or converter that explicitly exports JPEG. Keep the original if you may need its lossless PNG or HEIF quality. If the destination accepts the existing format, sending the original avoids an extra conversion.
Take and convert a screenshot on Android
Capture and locate it
On many Android phones, press Power + Volume down at the same time. On some devices, you can hold Power and tap Screenshot instead. Google’s Android screenshot instructions say to look in Photos under Collections > On this device > Screenshots, or in the Gallery app’s Screenshots folder on devices without Photos.
Export as JPEG
Open the captured image in the phone’s editor, Gallery app, or a converter, then choose JPEG/JPG through a command such as Save copy, Export, or Convert. Android’s default capture format and the available format controls vary by manufacturer, Android version, and app, so there is no single menu path that applies to every phone. Check that the output file ends in .jpg or .jpeg and opens as an image before uploading it.

Why a screenshot may not be JPEG
- The operating system captures in a native format. Windows or Mac utilities may produce PNG, and Apple explicitly documents PNG screenshots as well as HEIF screenshots in HDR mode. Capture first, then export when JPEG is required.
- The device or app controls the format. Android behavior varies by manufacturer, OS version, and gallery app. The capture shortcut does not necessarily offer a format choice.
- The file was renamed rather than converted. Changing screenshot.png to screenshot.jpg only changes the filename extension. The encoded data remains PNG, and a receiving service may reject it or fail to open it.
- The destination accepts a different format. If PNG or HEIF works, preserving the original avoids a lossy JPEG conversion.

Troubleshooting JPEG screenshots
The saved file is still PNG or HEIC
Check the file type selected in the export dialog, not only the filename. Reopen the image in an editor and explicitly choose JPEG/JPG under Save As, Export, or Convert. If the app offers no format selector, try another editor that does.

The upload form says the file is not a JPEG
The extension may have been renamed without converting the image, or the export may have retained the original format. Export again as JPEG and confirm the resulting image opens. Some forms also impose file-size limits; check the form’s own requirements rather than assuming that a .jpg extension is sufficient.
Text looks blurry or has halos
That is a common JPEG compression trade-off on screenshots with sharp edges and small lettering. Export at a higher quality setting if available, or keep PNG when the destination accepts it and text fidelity matters more than file size.
The screenshot shortcut does nothing
On Windows, try the Snipping Tool shortcut Windows + Shift + S; on keyboards without PrtScn, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows + Space Bar for applicable hardware. On a phone, confirm the button combination for that device and press the buttons together briefly. Button behavior and menu options can differ by model.
The exported file is unexpectedly large
Image dimensions and content affect file size, as do JPEG quality settings. If your editor provides a quality control, lower it gradually and inspect small text and edges at the intended viewing size. Avoid relying on a universal PNG-to-JPEG size estimate.

FAQ
Is JPG different from JPEG?
No. JPG is a shortened filename extension for JPEG; both indicate the same image format.
Can I convert a screenshot without losing the original?
Yes. Choose Export or Save a copy and give the JPEG a new filename. Keep the original PNG or HEIF file alongside it.
Should I use JPEG for screenshots with text?
Only when compatibility or a file requirement calls for it. PNG generally preserves sharp interface text without JPEG’s lossy compression artifacts.
