Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo take a screenshot with Puppeteer on Ubuntu, launch the installed Chrome binary by passing its verified path as executablePath, open the target page, and call page.screenshot(). Keep Chrome’s sandbox enabled unless you have diagnosed a specific environment issue that requires another supported configuration.
Use installed Chrome with Puppeteer
First locate the Chrome executable provided by your installation and verify that it exists. Ubuntu installations do not all use one universal Chrome path, so replace the illustrative path below with the one on your system.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
executablePath: '/path/to/installed/chrome',
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
- Install Puppeteer in your project and make sure your Node.js setup supports the
importsyntax used above. - Find the Chrome binary installed on your Ubuntu system. Use the actual executable path in
executablePath; do not copy the example placeholder literally. - Set the destination in
page.screenshot({ path: ... })to the image filename you want. - Run the script. It navigates to the URL, captures the viewport as a PNG, and closes the browser even if capture fails.
The example uses waitUntil: 'networkidle2', as in Puppeteer’s documented screenshot example. It is not a universal signal that a page is ready: a site with persistent network connections or delayed rendering may need a site-specific readiness condition before calling screenshot().
Choose between installed Chrome and Puppeteer’s browser
The puppeteer package normally downloads a Chrome for Testing build intended to work with Puppeteer. If installation scripts are blocked by package-manager policy, the installation guide documents manual browser installation with npx puppeteer browsers install. The guide estimates the Linux browser download at about 282 MB; actual size can vary by release and configuration.

Use puppeteer-core when you manage the browser yourself or connect to a remote one. It does not download Chrome. For a locally managed browser, configure an explicit executablePath or a supported channel. Puppeteer’s downloaded browser is version-specific to its API; its compatibility guarantees apply to Chrome for Testing, so do not assume every system Chrome version is guaranteed to work.
See the Puppeteer installation guide and configuration documentation for current browser-management details.
Capture a page or a single element
page.screenshot() is Puppeteer’s documented page-capture API. With a path, it writes the image to a file; the basic example above captures the page viewport. Puppeteer also documents ElementHandle.screenshot() to capture a selected element. If the element is out of view, that method attempts to scroll it into view before capturing.
const element = await page.$('.product-card');
if (!element) {
throw new Error('Could not find .product-card');
}
await element.screenshot({ path: 'product-card.png' });
Choose a selector that identifies the element you need, and wait for it to exist before taking the capture if the page renders it asynchronously. For screenshot options and behavior, see the Puppeteer screenshots guide.

Resolve Chrome launch failures on Ubuntu
Check missing shared libraries
If Chrome exits before Puppeteer can open a page, inspect the binary’s shared-library dependencies. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide suggests checking unresolved libraries with ldd chrome | grep not, substituting the path to the Chrome executable as needed. Its Debian/Ubuntu dependency guidance covers certificates and fonts, audio and accessibility libraries, GTK and NSS, graphics, and X11. Package names and requirements can change, so consult the live Puppeteer troubleshooting guide rather than relying on an old copied package list.
Puppeteer documents this browser-install command for installing Chrome and its required system packages on Ubuntu or Debian:
npx puppeteer browsers install chrome --install-deps
This command requires root privileges and is part of Puppeteer’s browser installation path. If you are using a separately managed system Chrome, you may instead need to install the OS dependencies required by that binary.
Diagnose sandbox and AppArmor errors
Keep the browser sandbox enabled where possible. Puppeteer warns that “Running without a sandbox is strongly discouraged.” Do not make args: ['--no-sandbox'] the default response to a failed launch; identify the reported error and check the current troubleshooting guidance first.

Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide notes a specific Ubuntu/AppArmor interaction: Ubuntu 23.10 and later ship an AppArmor profile that applies to stable Chrome binaries at /opt/google/chrome/chrome. Depending on configuration, that policy can prevent Puppeteer-downloaded Chrome for Testing binaries from using user namespaces and lead to a No usable sandbox! error. The behavior and available workarounds depend on the Ubuntu and Chrome configuration. Check the current troubleshooting page and its linked Chromium security guidance before applying a workaround.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without managing a local Chrome installation, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the API accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response includes page-verdict and billing headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
