Use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() after the page’s WebGL scene is ready—not merely after navigation finishes. For reliable results, use Puppeteer’s default headless mode first, wait for a page-specific render-ready signal, and check for WebGL context loss if the image is blank or stale.
Capture a WebGL page after its scene is ready
Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. The following example uses Puppeteer’s bundled Chrome, sets a viewport, waits for navigation, then waits for an application-defined readiness flag before saving a PNG:
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/webgl-page', {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
});
// Replace this with a readiness signal provided by the page.
await page.waitForFunction(() => window.webglSceneReady === true);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'webgl-page.png', type: 'png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
window.webglSceneReady is an illustrative application signal, not a Puppeteer or browser API. Replace it with a real signal from the page, such as a global flag, a DOM marker, or an application-controlled render-complete event. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide demonstrates Page.screenshot() after navigation using waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but network idle alone does not prove that a WebGL scene has rendered. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents the capture method and navigation example.

Puppeteer’s default headless: true launches Chrome’s newer headless mode. Setting headless: 'shell' launches the separate chrome-headless-shell binary; Puppeteer notes that it does not completely match regular Chrome behavior and can be more performant for automation that does not need the full Chrome feature set. There is no universally best mode for every WebGL page, so start with the default and compare modes if rendering differs from an interactive browser. See Puppeteer’s headless modes guide.

For shell mode, Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide says to pass --enable-gpu to enable GPU acceleration in headless mode:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
headless: 'shell',
args: ['--enable-gpu'],
});
This flag does not guarantee that the machine has a working GPU or suitable drivers. Chrome generally detects and enables GPU use when the system has appropriate drivers, but the capture environment still matters. If the page looks different, compare the default headless mode, shell mode with the documented GPU argument, and a headful run if your environment permits it. Avoid adding arbitrary flags before checking the mode, graphics support, page readiness, and context state. The troubleshooting guidance also discusses --no-sandbox for specific Linux sandbox failures and strongly discourages running without the sandbox; it is not a WebGL screenshot fix. See Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide.

Capture the whole page or just the WebGL canvas
Save a page screenshot
page.screenshot() captures the viewport by default. Set fullPage: true to capture the full document. Screenshot options include path, type, fullPage, clip, captureBeyondViewport, and background handling; PNG is the documented default image type. For example:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
await page.screenshot({
path: 'webgl-full-page.png',
type: 'png',
fullPage: true,
});
See the Puppeteer screenshot options reference for the available settings and their behavior.

Save a specific canvas
Use an element handle’s screenshot() method when you need only the WebGL canvas. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if necessary, then captures that element through the page screenshot mechanism:
const canvas = await page.waitForSelector('canvas');
if (!canvas) throw new Error('WebGL canvas was not found');
await canvas.screenshot({ path: 'webgl-canvas.png' });
If the page contains multiple canvases, use a selector tied to the application’s markup instead of assuming the first canvas is the scene. Check the output dimensions and clipping if the canvas is scaled or sits in a responsive layout. See Puppeteer’s element screenshot reference.

Diagnose blank or stale WebGL screenshots
- Confirm the mode. The default headless mode and
headless: 'shell'use different Chrome builds and can behave differently. - For shell mode, enable GPU acceleration. Add
--enable-gpuand confirm that the runtime has suitable graphics drivers; the flag alone does not establish that GPU acceleration is available. - Wait for the scene, not only navigation. A network-idle condition is a navigation wait, not an application-specific render-complete guarantee. Wait for the page’s own readiness marker or event.
- Check whether the context is lost.
WebGLRenderingContext.isContextLost()reports whether the context is lost. MDN lists GPU resource demand, graphics-processor switching, a stalled GPU operation, or a driver update among possible causes. See MDN’sisContextLost()reference. - Listen for context loss and restoration. The
webglcontextlostevent indicates that the browser detected loss of the drawing buffer. The application may need to restore resources and redraw after context restoration. See MDN’swebglcontextlostevent reference. - Keep Puppeteer and its browser pairing consistent. Puppeteer works best with its bundled Chrome for Testing; compatibility with other browser versions is not guaranteed. See Puppeteer’s configuration guide.
Optional context diagnostic
If you control the page or can identify the actual canvas, inspect its context state after the page has loaded. This diagnostic is only a point-in-time check: it cannot prove that the intended frame was rendered, and requesting a different context type from the one used by the application can mislead.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →const diagnostics = await page.evaluate(() => {
const canvas = document.querySelector('canvas');
if (!canvas) return { canvasFound: false };
const gl = canvas.getContext('webgl2') || canvas.getContext('webgl');
if (!gl) return { canvasFound: true, webglContextFound: false };
return {
canvasFound: true,
webglContextFound: true,
contextLost: gl.isContextLost(),
};
});
console.log(diagnostics);
For dependable diagnosis, instrument the application’s actual context or use a status signal supplied by the page.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, without you setting up Puppeteer and a browser for the capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/webgl-page -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These features are available on every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer’s network-idle wait guarantee that a WebGL screenshot is ready?
No. It indicates a navigation condition, not that the application has finished rendering its scene. Wait for a readiness signal provided by the page.
Can Puppeteer capture only the WebGL canvas?
Yes. Locate the canvas and call its element handle’s screenshot() method; use an application-specific selector if there are multiple canvases.
