To render Gujarati correctly in a Puppeteer screenshot, make a Gujarati-capable font available to the exact Chromium runtime that Puppeteer launches, apply it in the page’s CSS, and wait for the browser’s fonts to finish loading before capture. Then inspect the resulting screenshot: successful navigation alone does not confirm that the intended font was used or that every Gujarati character rendered correctly.
Why Gujarati screenshots need a font check
Gujarati is an Indic script that requires complex text shaping. Correct output depends on more than having a font file somewhere on the host: Chromium must be able to load a suitable font with the necessary glyph coverage and shaping support.
CSS can silently use a fallback when a requested family is unavailable or does not contain a character. Noto’s font-use guidance explains that the browser tries the next family in the stack when a font lacks the needed characters. Put the font for the most important script first, then include sensible fallbacks for Latin text and punctuation. See Noto font fallback guidance.

Pick a family suited to the page
Noto Sans Gujarati is a practical sans-serif choice for general page text. For interface text where vertical space is constrained, consider Noto Sans Gujarati UI; Noto distinguishes its UI family from document-oriented Gujarati typography. The Noto specimen reports 816 glyphs and support for 164 characters across five Unicode blocks for that UI font. Those figures describe that font file, not every Gujarati font, and do not guarantee that a particular page uses it. See Noto Sans Gujarati documentation.

Choose how Chromium gets the font
- Use a web font: Ensure the browser session can reach the font stylesheet and font files. Network restrictions, blocked requests, or a failed font request can trigger fallback.
- Install it in a container or Linux runtime: Include the font in the image or runtime that launches Chromium, not just on the machine from which you deploy. Check the exact CI or production environment.
- Use a managed browser’s font injection option: Cloudflare Browser Run documents adding a custom font rule with Puppeteer’s
page.addStyleTag(). The session still needs access to the font resource. See Cloudflare Browser Run custom fonts.
Puppeteer’s deployment guidance covers Linux dependencies and fonts, but its example charset list does not specifically certify Gujarati coverage. Treat installation as a prerequisite to verify, not proof of correct rendering. See Puppeteer troubleshooting.
Set the font in page CSS
Apply a specific family stack to the Gujarati text. The exact family name must match the face loaded by the page or the font installed in Chromium. For example:

}If the page already controls its typography, target the relevant content rather than overriding every element. A UI-specific stack can be appropriate for compact labels, but verify that its visual style fits the design. A fallback stack helps with characters outside the Gujarati font’s coverage; it does not substitute for a Gujarati-capable primary face.

This example uses Puppeteer’s documented navigation, page evaluation, and screenshot workflow. It assumes page is an initialized Puppeteer page and that the target page’s font CSS is in place or injected before capture.

It does not prove that the desired family was selected: a completed load can still leave text using fallback. If a site maintains persistent network activity and never reaches networkidle0, use a navigation condition suitable for that page, then wait for its own content-ready signal and document.fonts.ready. Check the Puppeteer API documentation for the version installed in your project: Puppeteer Page API.
Verify the screenshot in the target runtime
- Capture a sample containing Gujarati conjuncts, vowel marks, and mixed Gujarati and Latin text.
- Open the PNG and check that marks and character combinations appear joined and positioned as intended, with no missing-glyph boxes or unexpected visual fallback.
- Inspect the relevant element’s computed
font-familyin Chromium’s page context or developer tools. - Check that the font stylesheet and font-file requests succeeded in the same browser session.
- Repeat the capture in the deployment environment. Keep the Chromium version, installed fonts, CSS, locale and content, and viewport consistent between local and CI runs.
Font metrics can change wrapping and element geometry, so compare layouts only after fonts are ready. Puppeteer exposes page and screenshot controls, but the sources here do not establish a universal pixel-difference figure across platforms.

Choose a font delivery approach

These are implementation trade-offs, not benchmark rankings. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize control over runtime state, avoiding custom image packaging, or using a managed session.
Troubleshoot incorrect Gujarati rendering
The text has the wrong style or appears to use fallback
- Check the computed
font-familyon the text that looks wrong. - Confirm the CSS family spelling matches the loaded font’s family name.
- Verify the font request succeeded and the face covers the characters in the sample.
- Check that the Gujarati-capable family appears before general fallbacks in the stack.
It works locally but fails in Docker or CI
The local host may have fonts that the container does not. Add the needed font files to the image or load a web font that the browser can reach. Verify the browser and font packages in the exact runtime that launches Chromium; a font installed on the deployment host but unavailable inside the container will not help its browser. Text looks broken even though a font is installed
Installation does not establish that Chromium loaded the intended face, that it covers the required characters, or that the rendered sample is correct. Inspect font requests and computed style, then test the actual Gujarati text in the Chromium build used for capture. Gujarati requires complex shaping, so validate conjuncts and vowel marks rather than checking only whether the page loaded.
A managed session still uses another font
A managed Chromium session renders with its available font inventory unless the needed font is supplied or injected through a supported method. Cloudflare’s documented Puppeteer approach uses page.addStyleTag() to add an @font-face rule; ensure the session can access the referenced font before taking the screenshot. Layout differs between screenshots
Confirm that both captures use the same viewport and runtime settings, and wait for fonts before comparing them. Different font availability or metrics can change line breaks and element geometry. The cited Puppeteer documentation does not quantify cross-platform pixel differences.
