Use Playwright’s screenshot-time mask option for known sensitive elements, or its style option to hide them; then save only the smallest useful page area and inspect the image before sharing. Selectors must match the particular bank page—there is no universal selector. Avoid using a real account for a tutorial, and never share banking IDs, passwords, PINs, or OTPs.
Choose a safe test context first
If the screenshot is only to demonstrate a technique, use a synthetic or otherwise authorized test page rather than a real customer account. Do not enter real credentials or OTPs for a tutorial image. If you have a legitimate reason to capture an actual bank page, navigate to the bank’s verified official website and use a trusted browser and HTTPS-secured site. The Reserve Bank of India advises against entering credentials on untrusted portals and says not to share internet banking IDs, passwords, mobile banking PINs, or OTPs, including with bank staff (RBI Financial Awareness Messages (FAME), “Dos and Don’ts for Electronic Banking Transactions”).
Identify what the screenshot must not reveal
Before capturing, identify the specific page regions that could reveal private information: for example, account numbers, balances, names, or transaction details. The page structure and visible content differ by bank, page, and state, so inspect the actual page and choose selectors that match it. Do not treat the illustrative selectors below as verified selectors for any Indian bank.
Mask known sensitive elements with Playwright
The page.screenshot API accepts a mask list of locators. Playwright covers each matched element’s bounding box with an overlay; the documented default color is pink (#FF00FF). This is useful when you know which elements contain sensitive information and want to obscure them while retaining the rest of the page. Make sure the mask boxes cover the intended content and that every sensitive region has a matching locator.

Replace them with locators that you have verified against the authorized page you are capturing. If a locator matches nothing or the page changes, the intended information may remain visible.
Hide content with a screenshot-time stylesheet
Alternatively, pass CSS through style to hide content during the screenshot. Playwright documents that this stylesheet is applied while taking the screenshot and pierces Shadow DOM and inner frames. Its effectiveness still depends on your selectors matching the relevant content.

});The class names above are examples only. Confirm that your CSS matches the sensitive regions on the specific page; do not assume these classes exist on a bank site. A capture-time stylesheet can hide categories of content, but a missed selector can leave details exposed.

Capture only the area you need
Redaction and page scope solve different problems: masks or CSS cover content you have identified, while screenshot scope limits how much page content is captured. Prefer the narrowest scope that serves the purpose. Playwright documents locator-level screenshots, the clip option for a rectangular region, viewport screenshots, and fullPage screenshots. A full-page capture includes the full scrollable page, so leave fullPage disabled unless you genuinely need all of it. See the Playwright Page API documentation for the available screenshot options.

- One component: use a locator-level screenshot when only a specific component is needed.
- One rectangular area: use
clipwhen the relevant region is known. - Visible viewport: use the default viewport capture when that is sufficient.
- Entire scrollable page: use
fullPage: trueonly when the task requires it, and account for sensitive content anywhere on the page.
Review the saved image before sharing
- Open the actual saved image at normal viewing size.
- Check the full image, including edges, for account details or other private content.
- Check content that may have appeared after scrolling or been dynamically revealed.
- If a sensitive region is visible, correct the locator or stylesheet and capture again; verify the new file rather than assuming the change worked.
A mask only covers matched bounding boxes, and CSS only affects content matched by its selectors. Reviewing the output is therefore an essential safeguard, not proof that a particular disclosure is legally compliant. Do not share credentials, PINs, or OTPs in screenshots, chat, issue trackers, or support requests; RBI explicitly warns against sharing those details.
Troubleshooting common redaction problems
- Account detail still appears: the selector may not match the element, or another region may show the same information. Inspect the rendered page, adjust the selector, recapture, and review the resulting image.
- A mask covers the wrong area or too much useful content: confirm which element the locator matches and whether its bounding box is appropriate. Use a more precise locator or a different capture scope.
- CSS hiding has no effect: check that the chosen selectors match the page’s actual elements. The stylesheet option can reach Shadow DOM and inner frames, but it cannot compensate for selectors that identify the wrong content.
- The image contains more of the page than intended: avoid
fullPage: truewhen a locator screenshot,clip, or viewport capture meets the need. - The page changed after selectors were chosen: re-check the current rendered page and inspect a fresh capture. A selector that worked for one page state is not a guarantee for another.
