Use Playwright’s page.screenshot() method to save a Tamil webpage as an image on Linux. Install the Playwright package and its matching Chromium browser, make sure the browser can access a Tamil-capable font if the page does not supply one, then capture the page. A PNG can be saved even when Tamil glyphs are missing, so inspect the output rather than assuming a successful capture means correct text rendering.
Set up Playwright and Chromium on Linux
The example below uses Node.js and Chromium. Add Playwright to your project using its existing package manager, then install Chromium and the Linux dependencies Playwright documents:

npx playwright install --with-deps chromiumIf your project uses another package manager, install the Playwright package through that manager and run the browser-install command from the project. Playwright browser binaries are version-specific: the official documentation states, “Each version of Playwright needs specific versions of browser binaries to operate.” After updating Playwright, rerun its browser installation command so the browser matches the package version. The combined --with-deps option installs Linux system dependencies along with the selected browser. Linux distribution and release can affect package availability; the command is Playwright’s documented setup route, not a claim that every distribution has identical package names or behavior.

Capture the Tamil webpage

Choose viewport or full-page capture
Without fullPage: true, Playwright captures the current viewport. Set it to true to capture the full scrollable page. Long pages can therefore produce very tall images; use the default viewport capture if you only need the visible screen.
Choose image format and scale
Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshots. Use a filename extension that matches the chosen format, such as tamil-page.jpg or tamil-page.webp. PNG is a suitable default when you want a lossless image of text. The screenshot scale can be 'css' (one output pixel per CSS pixel) or 'device' (device-pixel output); the documented default is device scale. For example:

Playwright captures what the browser renders; it does not itself guarantee that the page’s Tamil text has the right font. If letters appear as empty squares, missing glyphs, or unexpected fallback, check the page and the Linux browser environment.
- Confirm the content. Verify that the page contains Tamil Unicode text, not text in an unsupported legacy encoding or an image of text.
- Check the page’s font. Inspect its font-family declarations and confirm that any declared Tamil webfont loads successfully. A font may be specified but fail to load.
- Provide a Tamil-capable font if needed. Noto Sans Tamil is one option. Browsers move through a page’s declared font-family list when a font lacks required characters; see the Noto Tamil documentation.
- Recreate the browser context and capture again. After changing system fonts, restart the browser or create a fresh context so it can use the updated fonts.
- Inspect the saved image. A successful PNG write only confirms that an image was captured; check the actual glyphs in the file.
Font package names and availability vary by Linux distribution and release. Fedora, for example, lists a google-noto-sans-tamil-fonts package; consult the current package manager and release-specific package information rather than applying a Fedora package name to Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, or another distribution. Verify the rendered result on the same machine or container that will create the screenshots.

Choose a browser engine and keep visual tests reproducible
Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Choose the engine that matches the browser behavior you need to reproduce, and install the corresponding binary for your Playwright version. A site can render differently across engines, so a screenshot from one is not automatically a pixel-equivalent substitute for another.
For screenshot assertions and visual comparisons, generate and compare images in the same environment. Playwright notes that screenshots differ between browsers and platforms because of rendering, fonts, and other factors. Host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and headless mode can also affect output. Keep the Linux image, browser and Playwright versions, installed fonts, settings, and headless mode consistent between baseline creation and reruns. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.

Troubleshooting
- Playwright cannot launch its browser: Install the browser matching the project’s Playwright version with
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium. If Playwright was updated, run the install command again. - Linux reports missing browser dependencies: Run Playwright’s browser installation command with
--with-deps. If setup still fails, check the instructions and package availability for your distribution and release. - Tamil appears as squares or fallback characters: Confirm Unicode content and successful font loading; then ensure a Tamil-capable font is available to the browser. Recreate the browser after a system-font change and inspect a fresh screenshot.
- The image cuts off content below the fold: Add
fullPage: trueto capture the scrollable page; otherwise, the default is the viewport. - Visual comparison reports unexpected differences: Compare captures made with the same browser engine, Playwright/browser versions, Linux environment, fonts, settings, and headless mode.
