Use Playwright’s regular page screenshot method: after the page and its SVG content are ready, call await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' }). SVG does not need a separate capture API. If you need the entire scrollable document, add fullPage: true.
Capture a page containing SVG with Playwright
Playwright screenshots the browser-rendered page, so the same method works whether the page contains HTML, inline SVG, or other graphics. In an existing Playwright script, navigate to the page, wait for the relevant content to appear, and then take the screenshot:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });Replace the example URL and readiness condition with the target site and its actual loading behavior. The screenshot records the page as rendered at capture time; it does not wait automatically for every application-specific task to finish.
Capture the full scrollable page
By default, the screenshot covers the current viewport. To capture the full scrollable document, set fullPage:

Choose screenshot settings for the output you need
Playwright’s screenshot API includes options for capture area, output format, image scale, animations, and transparency. Choose settings for the intended artifact rather than assuming one configuration suits every use. For example, a transparent background is useful when the page background should not appear in the output; image scale determines whether dimensions follow CSS pixels or device pixels. If an SVG is animated or inserted dynamically, first ensure the page has reached the state you want to record. Screenshot animation handling can help stabilize the image or preserve the intended animation state; select the behavior based on the output you need.
Diagnose missing, clipped, or different-looking SVG
If the screenshot does not show the expected graphic, the capture call may be working correctly while the SVG itself has not rendered as expected. Check how the SVG is embedded and what it depends on.

Check the embedding context
SVG can appear inline in the document, as an image such as an <img> or CSS background, or as an embedded document through elements such as <object> or <iframe>. Those contexts can behave differently. In particular, SVG used as an image may be restricted from loading external resources such as images and stylesheets. If the graphic relies on external files, verify it in the same browser context used by the page. See the MDN SVG guide.
Check sizing, clipping, and readiness
- Inspect the SVG’s intrinsic dimensions and CSS sizing. A zero-sized, unexpectedly scaled, or overflow-clipped graphic can be absent or cut off even when the page screenshot succeeds.
- Wait for the application to inject or update the SVG before capture. Use a condition tied to the relevant content rather than relying on an arbitrary delay when the application exposes a reliable readiness signal.
- For full-page capture, check whether the SVG is outside the document’s expected scrollable area or positioned in a way that changes what appears in the capture.
- If the SVG references external images or stylesheets, confirm that those dependencies load in its embedding context.
Use screenshot assertions for visual regression tests
For Playwright Test visual checks, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() rather than treating an ad hoc screenshot as a baseline comparison. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to produce the same result before comparing with the expected image. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and check baselines in a consistent environment.
