The quickest answer: macOS can capture your display, a window, or a selected area, but its built-in Screenshot tool does not provide a one-step, scrolling webpage capture. For a whole webpage, use a browser capture extension such as GoFullPage in Chrome. For long documents or content inside other Mac apps, use a scrolling-capture app such as CleanShot X or Snagit. Safari’s Web Archive option preserves a page as an archive, not as one tall screenshot image.
What macOS screenshot shortcuts can—and cannot—capture
Apple documents three built-in capture modes: Shift-Command-3 captures the entire display, Shift-Command-4 captures a selected region (or a window when you press Space), and Shift-Command-5 opens Screenshot controls for the screen, a window, or a portion of the screen. None of these modes automatically scrolls a webpage below the visible viewport. See Apple’s documentation: Take a screenshot on Mac.
A full-screen image is therefore not the same as a full-page webpage capture. If the page continues below the fold, choose a browser or app method designed to scroll and stitch the content.
Capture an entire webpage in Chrome
Use GoFullPage
- Install GoFullPage – Full Page Screen Capture from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open the webpage you want to save and wait for its visible content to finish loading.
- Activate GoFullPage from Chrome’s Extensions menu or its toolbar icon. The listing also describes a keyboard shortcut; the exact interface can change between extension versions.
- Let the extension scroll through the page and assemble the result. Do not switch tabs or interact with the page while capture is running.
- Review the resulting long image for missing sections, duplicated content, sticky headers, or unloaded pictures.
- Export it in the available image format or as a PDF, depending on whether you need an image for a message or a document for printing.
GoFullPage advertises support for capturing a page in its entirety, inner scrollable elements, and embedded iframes. Those are vendor-stated capabilities rather than a guarantee for every site. The Chrome Web Store listing and GoFullPage website are the authoritative places to check current availability and browser support; store status can change.

Prepare the page before capturing
- Set the browser zoom to a level that keeps text readable without creating an extreme image width.
- Expand accordions, tabs, comments, or “load more” controls if their content must appear.
- Scroll once through pages that lazy-load images, then return to the top. An extension may not obtain content that a site has not yet inserted into the page.
- Close transient menus and make sure you are signed in if the required content is behind an account.
- For a page with its own scrollable panel, identify whether you need the whole document or only that panel. Inner scrolling can require the extension’s advertised advanced support and may still fail on unusual layouts.
Capture scrolling content in another Mac app
If the source is a chat, code editor, spreadsheet, PDF viewer, or native document rather than an ordinary webpage, a dedicated scrolling-capture application is usually a better fit than a browser extension.
CleanShot X
CleanShot X for Mac advertises a Scrolling Capture mode for full pages, long chats, documents, and code. Use its scrolling-capture command, select the window or region, allow the app to move through the content, and then inspect and export the resulting image. Confirm the current macOS support, licensing, and export options on the product page before buying; those details can change.
Snagit
TechSmith’s Snagit Help describes scrolling capture for web pages, documents, spreadsheets, and other window content. In Snagit, choose its scrolling-capture workflow, select the target window or region, and choose the direction or automatic scrolling option offered by your version. Check the capture at the boundaries and export it in the format your destination accepts. Compatibility varies by application, so verify the current Snagit and macOS requirements.

Save a Safari webpage without making a screenshot
Safari offers a preservation option when an archive is more useful than a picture. Choose File > Save As, then select Web Archive to save the page and its graphics, or Page Source to save the HTML. Apple explains this workflow in Save part or all of a webpage in Safari on Mac.

Troubleshoot incomplete or distorted captures
The result stops at the visible viewport
You used a normal screen capture rather than a scrolling workflow. Reopen the page in Chrome and run GoFullPage, or use a dedicated app for non-browser content.

Images or sections are blank
Lazy-loaded media may not exist until the page is scrolled. First scroll through the page to trigger loading, wait for images to appear, and capture again. If content requires a click, expand it before starting. Protected pages, sign-in walls, bot checks, and content rendered only after interaction may not be capturable by an extension.
Sticky headers or popups repeat
Fixed navigation bars can be stitched into every segment, while cookie notices and chat widgets can cover text. Dismiss overlays before capture and inspect the final image. If the page layout changes while scrolling, try a different zoom level or an app that supports the target window.

The page may contain a separately scrolling element. Check whether the extension explicitly supports inner scrollable areas; otherwise capture the panel in smaller sections or use a dedicated capture application.

The image is too large to share
Export a PDF when the recipient needs pagination, reduce browser zoom before capture, or resize the finished image. Keep an original copy before resizing if text may need to be read later.
A browser page is protected
Browser security pages, authentication prompts, and content that never appears in the document itself may not be available to an extension. Use the site’s own export or print function when provided, and do not attempt to bypass access controls.
