To capture a full webpage without a cookie banner or popup covering it, first use the page’s own close, reject, or preference controls, then take a full-page screenshot. In Firefox, enable the full-page screenshot button in Developer Tools or run screenshot filename.png --fullpage in the Web Console. For repeated captures, Playwright supports fullPage: true. If you need to preserve the banner as evidence, leave it visible instead.
Choose whether the banner should appear in the screenshot
A full-page screenshot captures content beyond the visible viewport, but the page state still matters. Decide first whether you are documenting the consent notice itself or trying to show the page unobstructed.
- Preserve the notice: Leave it in place and capture the page as rendered. This is the better choice when the banner is part of what you need to document.
- Show the page without it: Use the banner or popup’s own close, reject, or preference controls, according to your choice. Sites differ, and not every overlay can be dismissed.
- Hide an overlay manually: If the screenshot may show a modified rendering, you can hide or delete the relevant page element in Firefox’s Inspector. Label the result accordingly: it is not an untouched record of the page.
Browser-specific steps below are for Firefox. The documented automation approach is Playwright; these instructions do not establish equivalent workflows for Chrome, Safari, mobile browsers, or extensions.
Take a full-page screenshot in Firefox
Use the Developer Tools screenshot button
- Load the page and set the banner or popup to the state you want to capture.
- Open Firefox Developer Tools and open its settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Select the screenshot button in the Developer Tools toolbar. Firefox saves the image in the browser’s Downloads directory.
- Open the saved image and check that it includes the intended page content and overlay state.
Firefox documents this full-page capture control and its settings path in its screenshot documentation.
Use the Web Console command
- Set the page and overlay to the state you want to document.
- Open Firefox Developer Tools’ Web Console.
- Enter
screenshot filename.png --fullpageand run it. - Check the saved file to confirm the capture is complete and the overlay is in the intended state.
Replace filename.png with the filename you want. Firefox’s Web Console documentation describes the screenshot command.

Hide or remove an overlay in Inspector
Use this only when changing the rendered page is acceptable. In Firefox Inspector, select the banner or popup node. Press H to hide or show the selected node; press Backspace or Delete to delete it. Then take the full-page screenshot using one of the Firefox methods above. Hiding or deleting an element changes the presentation; it does not record the page as visitors saw it.
Automate full-page captures with Playwright
For recurring captures, Playwright can save the full scrollable page. This runnable Node.js example loads a URL and writes a full-page PNG:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
})();
Install Playwright in your project and its browser before running the script. Replace https://example.com with the page to capture. The fullPage: true option captures the full scrollable page; the page’s current consent and popup state determines what appears in the image.

Mask or style content during capture
Playwright’s screenshot API also documents mask and style options for treating selected or dynamic content at screenshot time. Use those when the goal is a repeatable presentation, rather than an untouched record of the page. Consult the Playwright screenshot API and screenshot guide for the supported option syntax and behavior.

Troubleshooting and capture checks
The banner still covers the page
The screenshot reflects the state of the page when captured. Try the site’s own controls first. If they do not dismiss the overlay and changing the page is acceptable, select its node in Firefox Inspector and hide it with H or delete it with Backspace or Delete.

The screenshot stops at the visible viewport
In Firefox, use the entire-page screenshot button or include --fullpage in the Web Console command. In Playwright, set fullPage: true.
The image is missing content or shows an unexpected overlay state
Check the saved image rather than assuming the capture matches your intent. Confirm the page has loaded, set the banner to the required state before capture, and inspect the output. The cited browser documentation does not establish that fixed or sticky overlays behave identically across browsers or pages.

Can I take a screenshot that preserves a cookie banner?
Yes. Leave the banner visible and capture the page in that state. A full-page image can include the page content below the viewport while retaining the visible notice.
Does hiding a popup count as an untouched screenshot?
No. Hiding or deleting its page element changes the rendering. If you need an untouched record, capture the page without modifying the element.
