Short answer: Apple’s documentation for macOS Sonoma describes screenshots of the screen, a window, or a selected area—not a built-in Safari command that saves an entire scrolling webpage as one image. If you need the page itself saved, Safari can make a Web Archive; if you need a tall image, use a capture tool that explicitly supports full-page output.

Choose the right kind of capture

A full-page screenshot is one tall image of a webpage from top to bottom. It is different from saving the page as a file: an archive preserves webpage resources, while page source preserves HTML. Apple documents those Safari save options separately from macOS screenshot controls. Apple’s Safari guide and its Mac screenshot instructions do not establish a built-in Sonoma workflow for exporting a whole scrolling page as one image.

Option Output and scope Best for
macOS Screenshot Image of the screen, a window, or a selected area A visual record of what is currently visible
Safari Web Archive A saved webpage with graphics and links, subject to site restrictions and destination availability Keeping a local copy of page content
Safari Page Source HTML source Inspecting or reusing markup
Third-party capture tool Depends on the app; verify full-page image output and Sonoma compatibility When you specifically need one tall image

Capture the visible screen with macOS Screenshot

These built-in shortcuts capture the display or a visible region, not a scrolling webpage beyond the screen:

  • Shift-Command-3: capture the entire screen.
  • Shift-Command-4: select an area to capture.
  • Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot controls, where you can choose a screen, window, or selection capture.

Use this route when the visible state is what matters—for example, a form, a chart, or the portion of a page currently on screen. For a longer page, repeating captures produces separate images rather than one continuous full-page screenshot.

Save the whole webpage from Safari

  1. Open the webpage in Safari.
  2. Choose File > Save As.
  3. In the Format menu, choose Web Archive to save page graphics and links, or Page Source to save the HTML source.
  4. Choose a name and location, then save.

A Web Archive is useful for keeping page content locally, but it is not a tall screenshot image. Apple notes that some webpages may prevent Safari from saving items displayed on the page. Links in an archive also depend on the destination webpages remaining available.

Need one tall image? Use a tool that explicitly supports it

Apple’s documented Screenshot controls and Safari save formats do not provide the requested full-page raster image. A third-party app may offer that output, but check its current Sonoma compatibility, export formats, and whether it captures the entire page before installing or paying. For example, the Mac App Store listing for FireShot advertises full-page Safari screenshots and PDF export; the listing by itself does not establish Sonoma compatibility or guarantee a particular result.

Safari’s Web Inspector is for inspecting webpages, not a verified workaround for making a full-page image. WebKit documents enabling developer features in Safari Settings > Advanced; its guide explains how to inspect pages with Web Inspector. Those instructions do not document a full-page screenshot command.

Or skip the browser setup

For an API-based full-page capture, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one GET request. Get an API key and see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. This example saves a WebP screenshot of the requested page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting and practical checks

  • You saved a file but expected an image: Check the selected format. Web Archive and Page Source are webpage files, not screenshot images.
  • Only part of the page appears in your screenshot: Shift-Command-3, Shift-Command-4, and the Screenshot controls capture the screen or a chosen visible area; they are not documented as scrolling capture.
  • The Web Archive is missing content: The webpage may restrict saving. Apple explicitly warns that some sites can prevent items from being saved.
  • An archived link no longer works: Web Archive links depend on the destination page remaining available.
  • A third-party app does not produce a tall image: Verify its current export behavior and Sonoma compatibility before relying on it; a listing’s advertised features are not proof of the result on your setup.
  • You are following a Web Inspector tutorial: Treat inspection and screenshot capture as separate tasks. The cited WebKit documentation covers enabling and using inspection, not a full-page image command.

Is a Web Archive the same as a full-page screenshot?

No. A Web Archive saves webpage content and resources; it is not a single tall raster image.
