Open a face group, choose Add a name, and enter a name or nickname. Once labeled, you can search for that person using the label.
How to name a face group in Google Photos
Google Photos groups faces it detects. Naming a group gives it a searchable label; it does not attach an arbitrary tag to every image.
On Android
- Open Google Photos and sign in.
- Tap Collections, then People & pets.
- Tap the face group you want to identify.
- At the top of the group, tap Add a name, then enter a name or nickname. See Google’s instructions for setting up and managing face groups.
On a computer
- Open Google Photos on the web and go to the People page.
- Select a face group.
- Click Add a name and enter a name or nickname.
- Search for photos using the label. Google’s face-group help and search instructions describe these features.
If People & pets or Add a name is missing
Face Groups may be turned off, Google Photos may not have created any groups yet, or the feature may not be available for your region, domain, or account type. Google’s availability can vary across those factors. Check Face Groups settings and availability; if the feature is available but off, enable Face Groups there and allow time for groups to appear.
How to correct a mistaken face label
If Google Photos put the wrong label on a detected face in a particular image, edit the People label from that photo’s information panel. The correction controls may not be available in some countries.

What face labels can—and cannot—do
Find people by name
After you name a person or pet, search Google Photos using that name or nickname. Google says name-based search works after the face group has been labeled. See Search by people, things, and places.

Use descriptive searches separately
Google Photos also supports descriptive queries about people, things, and places—for example, “colorful sunsets in Mexico.” That kind of search is separate from naming a face group; it does not create a label for a person. Google’s search help explains both uses.
Know the limits
The documented workflow applies labels to faces Google Photos has detected. It does not provide a general method to draw a tag on any arbitrary face or attach custom keywords to any object in a photo.

Face labels are private to your account and are not shared with other accounts when you share a photo. Google also says that turning off Face Groups deletes your face groups, face models, and created labels. Review the Face Groups settings and information before changing the setting.
Groups are not infallible: Google says its grouping may also rely on characteristics such as photos taken close together in time or similar clothing, even when a face is not visible. Review groups and remove photos that do not belong. Google notes that face models may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions; consult its settings information and applicable local guidance rather than assuming one legal rule applies everywhere. See Google’s face-group help.
