WordPress lets you edit an image’s title, alt text, caption and description in the Media Library, but those fields are not taxonomy tags. To assign actual categories, tags or custom taxonomy terms to media files, enable a taxonomy for attachments—usually with a plugin or custom code.
Choose between image details and actual tags
Use the Media Library fields when you want to describe an image or make it easier to identify. Use taxonomy terms when you want to group, filter or manage multiple media files by shared labels.

WordPress’s standard Categories and Tags are intended for regular posts; they do not automatically provide a tagging interface for attachment records. WordPress documents the image detail fields in its Media Library screen guide and Edit Media guide.
Edit an image’s details in the Media Library
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Media → Library.
- Select the image. In grid view, its attachment details open in a dialog; choose Edit more details to open the fuller edit screen.
- Enter or update the Alt Text, Title, Caption and Description fields as appropriate.
- Save the changes using the control shown on the edit screen.
Write alt text for the image, not for search terms
Alt text should describe the image’s meaningful content for people using assistive technology. It is not a taxonomy tag, and adding keywords to it does not create a searchable category system. WordPress’s Image block documentation also points users to the Media Library to customize image title, caption, alt text and description; it says these details can support accessibility, SEO and finding files.

Use the other fields for their intended roles
- Caption: a brief explanation that may display beneath the image, depending on how it is used.
- Title: a file label that a theme or plugin may show on attachment pages or in galleries.
- Description: a place for longer information about the image.
Add real tags or categories to media files
Attachment tagging requires a taxonomy to be registered or enabled for the attachment post type. For a no-code workflow, a media-management plugin can expose taxonomy fields in the admin area. For a code-based workflow, a developer can register a taxonomy for attachments. WordPress explains the post-type relationship in its Taxonomies documentation and the register_taxonomy() developer reference.
Use a plugin for admin assignment and filtering
The Media Library Assistant listing describes assigning attachment categories, tags and custom taxonomy terms, filtering media and bulk editing. The F4 Media Taxonomies listing describes adding media filters for categories, tags and custom taxonomies, and includes code snippets for registering or associating taxonomies.
These listings describe different workflows, not a universal winner. Before installing either plugin, check its current maintenance, compatibility and feature details against your WordPress setup.
Ask a developer to register a taxonomy in code
Custom registration gives you control over the taxonomy’s name, hierarchy and association with attachments. It also requires attention to term counts: WordPress notes that the default count callback may exclude attachments that are not attached to another post. If unattached uploads should count, review the update_count_callback guidance in the register_taxonomy() reference rather than assuming the displayed totals include every file.

If you only need better descriptions, edit the image details. If you need reusable labels to find and manage groups of media, configure attachment taxonomies and verify the resulting filters and counts on your site.
