Use condition-based waits to synchronize Selenium WebDriver tests: wait for the specific state the next test step needs, such as an element becoming visible, rather than pausing for an arbitrary number of seconds. This makes tests less prone to racing the application and avoids unnecessary delay when the page is ready sooner.
Why Selenium tests need synchronization
A browser test and the application run asynchronously. A test may try to click or read an element before the page has finished creating it or changing its state. That race condition can make a test pass on one run and fail on another.
A navigation command waits for the page-load readiness state, which defaults to complete. That covers assets declared by the page, but it does not guarantee that JavaScript has finished changing the interface. In a single-page application, for example, a click may trigger a later update that adds or reveals an element. Wait for the state required by the next command.
Which Selenium wait should you use?
| Approach | Scope | What it waits for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed sleep | One fixed pause | Nothing in particular; it waits for the chosen duration | May still be too short on a slow run, or waste time when the page is ready early. |
| Implicit wait | Global to the WebDriver session | An element lookup to locate an element | Does not check whether the element is visible, enabled, or ready for a particular interaction. |
| Explicit wait | Local to the step where it is used | A specified condition, polled until it succeeds or times out | Requires choosing a condition that represents the state the next action needs. |
Fixed sleeps
A fixed sleep is a pause such as “wait five seconds.” It does not check whether the application is ready. If the application takes longer, the test may still race it; if it takes less time, the rest of the pause is wasted. Selenium documents condition-based waits as a better way to synchronize.

Implicit waits
An implicit wait applies to element-location calls across the session. The default is zero, so an unsuccessful lookup returns immediately. When enabled, WebDriver waits up to the configured duration for an element to be located. Finding the element does not establish that it is visible or otherwise ready for the intended action.
Explicit waits
An explicit wait checks a particular condition and continues when it becomes true. If the timeout expires first, it fails with a timeout error. This makes explicit waits a useful default for dynamic interfaces: state the outcome needed at each step instead of applying one global delay.

How to wait for an element in Selenium with Python
This example waits until the element with ID revealed is visible, then clicks it. The pattern follows Selenium’s Python documentation; confirm that the APIs match the Selenium version installed in your project.
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, timeout=10)
button = wait.until(EC.visibility_of_element_located((By.ID, "revealed")))
button.click()
The code assumes that driver is an initialized WebDriver session and that the page has already reached the point where the element may appear. The 10-second timeout is an example value, not a universal recommendation. Choose a limit appropriate to the application and test environment; Selenium’s documentation does not specify a timeout that suits every application.

Match the condition to the next action
- Use a presence condition when the next step only requires that an element exist in the DOM.
- Use a visibility condition before interacting with an element that must be displayed.
- Wait for visible text or a title condition when that is the meaningful outcome being checked.
- Use staleness when the next step depends on an old element reference becoming invalid after an update.
- For an application-specific completion state, write a predicate that checks an observable outcome rather than guessing a delay.
Presence is not visibility, and visibility alone does not prove that an application-specific operation or side effect has finished. Make the condition reflect what the following test command actually needs.
How implicit and explicit waits interact
Avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits. The Selenium Project warns: “Do not mix implicit and explicit waits. Doing so can cause unpredictable wait times.” An implicit wait can affect element lookups performed inside an explicit-wait condition, making the overall timing harder to reason about.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Selenium illustrates the warning with a 10-second implicit wait and a 15-second explicit wait, noting that a timeout may occur after 20 seconds. This is an example of unpredictable timing, not a general formula. When using explicit waits, keep the implicit wait at its default of zero unless you have deliberately validated another configuration for your binding and test suite.

Wait syntax and supported APIs depend on the language binding. Selenium’s Expected Conditions guide has examples for Java, Python, and JavaScript. It notes that .NET stopped supporting its Expected Conditions classes; Ruby commonly uses blocks, procs, and lambdas instead. Check the documentation for your binding and installed version before copying an example.

Troubleshooting flaky waits
The element lookup fails immediately
The implicit wait may be zero, which is the default, or the element may not exist yet. If the test needs to wait for a specific state, use an explicit wait for that condition rather than relying on an immediate lookup.
The element is found but cannot be used
Element location only confirms that WebDriver found it. If the next operation requires it to be displayed, wait for visibility. If the application has a further readiness state, wait for an observable outcome that represents it.
The test fails after navigation even though the page loaded
The page-load readiness state does not guarantee that later JavaScript changes are complete. Add a wait for the element, text, title, or other state that the next step depends on.
The test takes too long or still times out
Replace fixed pauses with a condition-based wait, and check that the condition describes the required state. Review the configured timeout against the application and test environment; there is no universal value established by Selenium’s documentation. If both implicit and explicit waits are configured, remove the interaction unless the combined behavior has been validated for the suite.
