To sync smart lights with music, games, or movies, first match the sync method to where the content plays: music needs an audio-reactive feature, a computer can use desktop sync software, an external player or console can use a compatible HDMI sync box, and TV-native apps need a compatible TV app or screen-sync system. These features are ecosystem- and model-specific, so check compatibility before buying.

Choose a sync method based on where your content plays

Content source Suitable sync method Key limitation or requirement
Music A supported music integration or an audio-reactive mode Hue’s Spotify integration requires a Hue Bridge, color-capable lights, and an Entertainment area.
Windows or Mac computer Desktop sync software for your lighting ecosystem It follows content on the computer display. Confirm supported operating systems and compatible lights.
Console, Apple TV, set-top box, or Blu-ray player A compatible HDMI sync box The video must pass through the box. Hue says its Sync Box does not sync TV-native apps.
Apps built into a TV A compatible TV sync app or a screen-capture system Availability depends on the TV model, software, product, and region.
Supported TV or computer with Nanoleaf lights Nanoleaf Screen Mirror It captures display colors in real time, but support varies by product.

Before choosing, compare which sources the method can capture, which lights it supports, whether it needs a Bridge or other hardware, how it connects, the HDMI specifications if applicable, and the total cost in your region. For an HDMI product, check the exact model’s supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR, audio/eARC routing, and device compatibility against its current specifications.

Sync lights with music

Philips Hue and Spotify

Hue’s Spotify setup requires color-capable Hue lights and a Hue Bridge, with the lights assigned to an Entertainment area. In the Hue app, open the Sync tab, link Spotify, then start syncing from that tab. Hue says both free and paid Spotify accounts work. The app provides controls for intensity, brightness, and color palette. See Philips Hue’s Spotify setup guidance for current requirements.

That setup is specific to Spotify. Check current support for any other music service rather than assuming it works the same way.

Nanoleaf Music Sync

Nanoleaf describes Music Sync as a feature that reacts to music or audio. It is distinct from Screen Mirror, which follows display colors, and Sync+, which lets compatible products react together across multiple lights. Check Nanoleaf’s feature descriptions for compatibility with the specific products you own.

Sync lights with games on a computer

Mirror the monitor

Desktop sync software can follow colors on a computer display. Hue lists its Sync desktop app for Windows and Mac; Nanoleaf says Screen Mirror can capture computer-display colors for compatible lights. These are screen-mirroring features, not a guarantee that every game has custom lighting effects.

Use game or application integrations

Some gaming integrations react to supported in-game events rather than simply matching monitor colors. Nanoleaf’s Razer integration requires compatible products, the Nanoleaf Desktop App, Razer Synapse, and Chroma Connect. Its documentation distinguishes Ambient Awareness, which mirrors monitor colors, from game or application integrations that respond to supported events. Razer also describes Hue lighting integration through Synapse. Availability depends on supported products, games, and software versions; see Nanoleaf’s Razer Chroma information and Razer’s Hue integration overview.

Sync lights with movies on an external device

If a console, streaming box, or disc player sends video over HDMI, a compatible HDMI sync box can sit in that signal path and drive the lights. Hue lists its Play HDMI Sync Box for this kind of setup; it describes the 8K model as an option for advanced HDMI and gaming setups and the 4K model for simpler everyday use. Those descriptions do not establish support for every resolution, refresh rate, or HDR format: verify the specifications for the exact model and the rest of your device chain.

Can you sync lights with Netflix on your TV?

Yes, if you use a method that can capture TV-native apps. An HDMI sync box does not capture a TV’s built-in Netflix app because that video does not pass through the box. Hue lists two alternatives: its Sync TV app on certain compatible televisions, and Hue Play Screen Sync, which captures television screen content, including apps, without changing the HDMI setup.

Check TV-app compatibility

Hue’s guide lists its Sync TV app for Samsung QLED TVs from 2022 or newer at Q60 series or higher, and LG TVs from 2024 or newer running webOS 24 or higher. Hue says the app can sync TV apps such as Netflix and Disney+ without extra devices. Confirm the exact television model, firmware, market, and current compatibility list using Hue’s Sync options guide; product availability and compatibility can change.

Consider screen-capture systems

Nanoleaf says Screen Mirror can capture colors from a TV display in real time for compatible lights. Hue Play Screen Sync is another screen-capture route. A September 2026 TechRadar report describes Hue’s system as camera-based and notes reflections and latency as general considerations for camera sync. That report does not establish a measured performance comparison; check local launch and availability before relying on it.

Set up the right system

  1. Identify the source. Decide whether you want music, a computer display, an external HDMI player, or a TV-native app to control the lights.
  2. Check the ecosystem. Confirm that your lights support the relevant feature, not merely another sync feature from the same brand.
  3. Check required hardware and software. For Hue Spotify sync, make sure you have a Bridge, color-capable lights, and an Entertainment area. For computer or gaming sync, verify the operating-system and app requirements.
  4. For HDMI, confirm the full signal chain. Verify the sync box’s exact resolution, refresh-rate, HDR, and audio/eARC support against the source, TV, and any receiver or soundbar.
  5. For TV-native apps, choose a capture method that supports them. Verify the specific television model and regional availability; an HDMI box alone is not enough.
  6. Compare total setup cost and installation. Include any required Bridge, compatible lights, sync hardware, or software dependencies before deciding.
