To make your phone contacts available on your car’s screen, pair the phone with the car over Bluetooth and allow contact sharing when prompted. Some systems sync automatically; others require you to turn on contact sharing in the phone’s Bluetooth settings or choose a manual sync or phonebook-download option in the car.
Pair your phone and allow contact access
- Start pairing from the car. Open the car’s Phone or Bluetooth settings and choose the control to add or pair a phone. In Chevrolet’s documented procedure, for example, the path is Phone > Manage Phones > plus sign. Menu names differ by vehicle; follow your owner’s manual if yours uses different labels. - Finish pairing on both devices. Select the car on your phone and confirm any matching code or prompts shown on the car and phone.
- Allow contact sharing. When either device asks whether the car can access or download contacts, approve it. Some phones require an additional confirmation before transfer begins, according to Hyundai’s Bluetooth guidance.
Once permission is granted, the car may populate its phonebook automatically. If it does not, check the device-specific steps below and then try the car’s manual sync control.
Check contact-sharing settings on your phone
iPhone
Open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the paired car if needed, and turn on its contact-sync option if one is shown. Chevrolet labels this control “Sync Contacts”; after changing it, disconnect and reconnect the phone. Your iPhone’s wording and available controls may vary by software version and vehicle. Android
Approve the contact-access request when it appears. If you dismissed it, open the paired car’s Bluetooth device settings and look for a contact-sharing permission, enable it if available, and reconnect. Android menus vary by phone manufacturer and software version, so consult the phone’s instructions if the setting is not where expected. Try the car’s manual sync or phonebook import
When contact sharing is enabled but the phonebook is empty or outdated, look in the car’s Phone or Contacts menu for an option such as Sync Contacts, Import Contacts, or Download Phonebook. Chevrolet documents a manual re-sync from the Contacts menu; the Mazda CX-5 manual describes an Import Contact / Download Phonebook function. The path and effect depend on the vehicle. Check the manual before choosing an import-all option. In the cited CX-5 procedure, importing all contacts after saving a phonebook to the Bluetooth unit overwrites that saved phonebook.

If contacts still do not appear
- Confirm the phone is connected to the car by Bluetooth, not merely visible as a previously paired device.
- Check that contact sharing is allowed for this specific car in the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
- Disconnect and reconnect after changing permissions, then wait for the phonebook to refresh.
- Use the car’s manual sync or download option if available.
- If the transfer remains stuck, remove the pairing from both devices and pair again using the vehicle manual’s procedure. Mopar’s guidance specifically says to accept the phonebook-download prompt when it appears. Mopar Bluetooth troubleshooting
- If a prompt never appears or the phone is not supported, check the vehicle and phone compatibility guidance; transfer support and any extra confirmation requirements vary. Hyundai Bluetooth guidance
Bluetooth phonebook versus CarPlay or Android Auto

Projection connection requirements vary by car. A cable may be needed for wired projection on some systems, but it is not a general requirement for Bluetooth contact syncing.

Capacity and behavior vary by vehicle
Do not assume that every car stores the same number of contacts or handles imports the same way. Mopar states that the system covered by its guidance supports up to 2,000 contact names with four numbers per contact; the page does not state a publication year, and that capacity is not a universal car limit. For your exact model, consult the owner’s manual for pairing, permission, manual sync, capacity, and whether an import replaces an existing phonebook. The basic procedure does not require a special tool or subscription.
