Google Password Manager passkeys can sync between Android devices and supported computers when you use the same Google Account in Chrome or Android. That is different from signing in to a desktop with a passkey stored only on your phone: that route uses a QR code and Bluetooth, and does not mean the passkey has been saved on the computer.

How Google passkey syncing works

A passkey is a sign-in credential tied to a particular site or app. Google says passkeys saved in Google Password Manager are backed up and synced to your Google Account, so they can be used on supported computers and Android devices signed in to that same account. To create one for your Google Account, visit Google Account sign-in options, choose Create a passkey, and unlock the device. Repeat on another device if you want to create a passkey there too. Google notes that Android devices already signed in to your account may have passkeys registered.

Google Password Manager’s documented desktop storage options are Windows 10 or later, Chromebook with ChromeOS 129 or later, Mac, and Linux. Google’s help pages were accessed October 4, 2026; version requirements can change. These storage-platform requirements are distinct from Google Account Help’s broader baseline requirements for using passkeys to sign in.

Use a passkey already saved on your Android phone

If the passkey is on your phone but has not synced into the computer’s Google Password Manager, you can still use the phone to sign in to Google on a desktop. This is a proximity-based sign-in flow, not proof that the passkey has been copied to the desktop.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  1. On the computer’s Google sign-in page, enter your username.
  2. Choose Try another way, then Use your passkey, to display a QR code.
  3. Make sure Bluetooth is on for the phone and computer, then scan the QR code with the phone.
  4. Tap the passkey prompt on the phone and verify with fingerprint, face unlock, or the phone’s PIN.

Google says a later sign-in with the same computer-and-phone pairing may trigger a notification automatically. The phone must have screen lock enabled; Bluetooth is needed for this phone-to-computer method.

Check which passkey storage method you are using

Not every passkey syncs. The recovery outcome depends on where the credential was saved:

  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Storage method Sync or backup What happens if the device or storage is lost
Google Password Manager Backed up and synced to the Google Account across supported Chrome and Android devices, when signed in to the same account. Available on supported devices after signing in to the same Google Account; Google’s account help also explains how to remove a passkey associated with a lost device.
Windows Hello Stored locally on the computer; Google says it does not sync or back up. Cannot be recovered if the computer is lost or Windows is reinstalled.
Chrome profile on macOS Google says it does not provide the same sync and backup behavior as Google Password Manager. May be unrecoverable if the computer is lost or the Chrome profile is deleted.
FIDO2 security key Not backed up. Cannot be recovered if the key is lost or reset.

Google’s current Chrome Help describes these storage differences in its passkey options and storage guidance. A security key is an optional way to keep a passkey on a dedicated physical device, not a requirement for syncing.

Requirements for passkeys and cross-device sign-in

Google Account Help lists these general minimums for using passkeys with a Google Account: a computer running Windows 10, macOS Ventura, or ChromeOS 109 or later; a phone running Android 9 or iOS 16 or later; or a FIDO2 security key. Listed browser versions are Chrome 109 or later, Safari 16 or later, Edge 109 or later, and Firefox 122 or later. These are general passkey-use requirements, not the narrower list of desktop platforms documented for saving passkeys in Google Password Manager.

Why a passkey may not appear on another device

First establish where the passkey was created. A Windows Hello, macOS Chrome-profile, or hardware-key passkey is not a Google Password Manager passkey and will not appear as an account-synced credential. If it was saved in Google Password Manager, check that the other device meets the relevant platform requirements and that Chrome or Android is signed in to the same Google Account. If the passkey exists only on an Android phone, use the QR-code flow rather than assuming it will be present in the computer’s local storage.

For a Google Account passkey specifically, Google directs users to its passkey setup and troubleshooting guidance. Its general help also notes that an administrator may limit passkey-only sign-in on some school or work Google Workspace accounts.

Security and account recovery considerations

Passkeys are designed to resist phishing and are unique to the site or app for which they were created. Google explains that a site checks that the device holds the credential without learning the private passkey itself; biometric data used for fingerprint or face unlock stays on the device and is not shared with Google. As Google Security expert Christiaan Brand put it in an October 10, 2023 explainer, “A passkey is a FIDO credential stored on your computer or phone, and it is used to unlock your online accounts.”

Create passkeys only on devices you personally control. Google warns that anyone able to unlock a device containing a passkey may be able to access the Google Account. Adding a passkey does not delete existing authentication or recovery factors, so review that your recovery options remain usable. Creating a passkey opts you into passkey-first sign-in by default; turn off Skip password when possible in Google Account security settings if you want password-first sign-in instead. For accounts using 2-Step Verification or Advanced Protection, Google says a passkey may satisfy the possession check and bypass a separate second step.

What Google has reported about passkey use

In a May 2, 2024 announcement, Google reported more than 1 billion passkey authentications across over 400 million Google Accounts and said passkeys enabled sign-in 50% faster than passwords. Those are Google’s dated figures and comparison, not an independent performance study or a current 2026 usage total.
