Keep the iPhone’s reference audio on, make a clear clap or slate during the take, then align the separate audio recording with the video in your editor. In Final Cut Pro for Mac, you can use waveform analysis to synchronize the clips; check the result before muting the iPhone’s scratch track.
Choose how to record the external sound
You can either record through a recognized external microphone connected to the iPhone, or record sound separately and synchronize it with the video afterward. The first option can avoid a separate sync step, but depends on the connected hardware being recognized and selected as the input. The second preserves a separate audio file and gives you more flexibility, but requires alignment in post-production.

Record a reliable sync reference
- Start the iPhone video recording and the external audio recording before the action begins. Leave the iPhone’s scratch audio enabled; the editor can use it to find matching sound in the recorder file.
- Make one clear clap or slate in view of the iPhone after both devices are recording. The clap produces a visible instant in the picture and a sharp sound transient in both recordings.
- Continue the take, then stop both recordings. Keep the full original files for editing so the shared reference remains available.
A physical film clapperboard or slate can make this routine easier on repeat shoots or coordinated productions. A hand clap provides the same basic visible-and-audible marker without extra equipment. Apple’s filmmaking curriculum recommends using a slate and syncing tracks to its clap.
Synchronize the files in Final Cut Pro for Mac
- Import the iPhone video and the separate audio recording into the project.
- Select the relevant video and audio clips in the browser.
- Choose Clip > Synchronize Clips.
- In the synchronization options, select Use audio for synchronization to have Final Cut Pro analyze the clips’ waveforms.
- Review the synchronized result, then use the clean external recording as the program audio and mute or disable the iPhone’s scratch audio once you are satisfied with the alignment.
Apple’s Final Cut Pro for Mac user guide describes synchronization using audio content as well as markers, timecode, and file creation date. Menu labels and automatic-sync behavior differ among editing apps, so use the instructions for your editor if you are not working in Final Cut Pro.

Check sync and fix a mismatch
Check alignment near the start of the synchronized material and again later in the take. Listen to dialogue and watch visible mouth movements or other events that have a matching sound. A result that seems right at one point may still need attention elsewhere.
- If waveform sync fails: confirm that both files contain the clap or other matching sound, then try a clear clip marker or timecode reference if available.
- If the result is still off: manually adjust the separate audio clip’s position in your editor and review it again at more than one point.
- If the files do not share useful audio: use the recorded clap, a marker, or a shared timecode reference instead of relying on waveform matching.
Apple cautions in its Final Cut Pro for Mac user guide: “Some audio recordings are not suited for use with this feature.” Treat automatic analysis as a convenience to verify, not a guarantee.

When timecode or genlock is relevant
For ordinary single-camera video and separately recorded dialogue, a clap and waveform alignment are usually the straightforward choices. In coordinated multi-camera work, external timecode can provide a shared reference. Apple documents external timecode input to Final Cut Camera through a connected generator over USB-C. Apple also documents genlock with Final Cut Camera on iPhone 17 Pro or later; genlock synchronizes camera or display frame timing in specialized production contexts and is not required to align ordinary external audio with iPhone video.
