You can automate playlist changes around sunrise and sunset, but IST alone is not enough to calculate the right trigger: you also need the intended location and date. Then use a scheduler to run the appropriate YouTube API operation. If by “switch” you mean changing the live broadcast rather than changing playlist contents, that is a separate Live Streaming API workflow.
First decide what “switch” means
YouTube treats playlists, playlist items, live broadcasts, and incoming live streams as distinct resources. Choose the behavior before building a schedule:
- Change playlist contents or order: add, update, or remove playlist items. This does not change which broadcast is live.
- Change playlist metadata: update the playlist itself, rather than its individual items.
- Change the live event: schedule or transition a broadcast using the Live Streaming API. A playlist mutation alone does not start or switch a broadcast.

Why IST does not give you a universal sunrise or sunset time
Sunrise and sunset depend on a geographic location and a date. IST is a time zone for expressing an instant; it does not identify where the sun event should be calculated. Choose the location that matters to your channel, calculate that location’s sunrise and sunset for each date with a method you have independently verified, then convert the resulting instants to IST for display and scheduling.

Do not hard-code one sunrise or sunset time for all locations or dates. The YouTube API documentation covers playlist and livestream operations, not a solar-event calculation method, so this guide does not prescribe a calculator or claim a particular calculation accuracy.
Plan the automation as three separate systems
1. Solar-event calculation
For each date, obtain sunrise and sunset for the selected location. Confirm how your chosen method handles the location, date changes, and any dates or places for which it cannot return a normal event. Treat the result as an instant, then express it in IST for the scheduler. Keep the location and calculation method explicit in your configuration so a future operator can verify what the schedule means.

2. Scheduler
Configure a hosted or self-managed scheduler to invoke your automation at the calculated event instants. The scheduler’s job is to start your code; it does not itself mutate YouTube resources. Build for failed API calls, retries, and missed invocations. YouTube’s API documentation does not guarantee that your external scheduler will run on time or retry your code.
3. YouTube API operation
Your code must perform the operation that matches the desired behavior: mutate playlist items or metadata, or manage broadcast resources and their state. Use authorized credentials and keep them out of public code, logs, and client-side pages.

Automate playlist contents or ordering
- Authorize the application. Playlist item operations require authorization appropriate to the channel and action. Follow Google’s playlist implementation guide.
- Read the playlist and identify its items. Use
playlistItems.listto retrieve the playlist items and the identifiers needed for later changes. The current API reference lists a cost of 1 quota unit per call; quota figures can change, so verify the PlaylistItems reference before implementation. - Choose the right mutation. Use the relevant insert, update, or delete operation for adding, changing, or removing an item. An item’s position is part of its playlist placement; changing it is not the same as changing a broadcast.
- Construct updates carefully. For
playlistItems.update, identify the item and playlist and include the included resource. Google warns that omitted mutable values may be cleared, so preserve every mutable field that should remain set. The current reference lists a cost of 50 quota units per update call; check the PlaylistItems: update reference because quotas can change. - Make the scheduled action safe to repeat. Before inserting or deleting, check current playlist state so a retry does not create unintended duplicates or remove an item that should remain. This is an implementation safeguard, not a behavior guaranteed by YouTube.
If the intended change is playlist metadata rather than its items, use the separate Playlists: update operation.
Switching which livestream is active is a different workflow
A live broadcast represents an event; a live stream represents the incoming audio-video feed. YouTube lets you bind a stream to a broadcast. Its recurring-event guidance describes reusing one stream for multiple broadcast resources, with only one event live at a time in that common scenario; a separate stream per broadcast is another implementation choice. Compare the operational fit of stream reuse versus separate streams for your events rather than treating a playlist change as a live-event switch. Schedule and bind the broadcast
- Create the broadcast with its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status using LiveBroadcasts: insert.
- Bind the broadcast to the intended incoming stream using LiveBroadcasts: bind.
- Before transitioning the broadcast to testing or live, check that the bound stream is active. Use LiveBroadcasts: transition only when the stream is ready.
Google’s Life of a Broadcast documentation describes the broadcast lifecycle and testing stage, including monitor-stream settings for testing. Test the complete schedule with a non-public or otherwise appropriate setup before relying on it unattended.
Choose an implementation approach

These choices concern different layers: a scheduler triggers code, the solar calculation supplies event times, and the YouTube API performs the resource change. Keeping them separate makes failures easier to identify.

Troubleshooting common failures
- The action runs at the wrong local time: verify the configured location and date, and check the conversion of the calculated instant to IST. A fixed IST clock time is not a substitute for location-specific sunrise or sunset.
- The API rejects a playlist update: confirm authorization and that the request identifies the correct playlist item, playlist, and included resource. Preserve mutable fields that should remain set.
- An update appears to clear information: inspect the request body for mutable values that were omitted. Rebuild the update with the fields you intend to retain.
- A broadcast does not go live: confirm it is bound to the intended stream and that the stream is active before attempting a testing or live transition.
- A scheduled change is missed or runs twice: inspect scheduler execution history and API responses, then make the operation safe to retry and check current YouTube state before applying it again.
- Quota is unexpectedly exhausted: review the number and type of API calls. The current references list 1 unit for
playlistItems.listand 50 units forplaylistItems.update; verify current quota costs in Google’s documentation.
