To watch DISH, press SAT on the DISH remote, then use the TV’s Input or Source control to select the HDMI port connected to the receiver. “HDMI 1” and “HDMI 2” are TV inputs, not settings you change on every DISH remote. The exact port number depends on where the cable is plugged in.

Switch to the HDMI input carrying the DISH picture

  1. Turn on the TV and DISH receiver. If another device, such as an audio receiver, is between them, turn that on too.
  2. Press SAT on the DISH remote so its controls are in receiver mode.
  3. On the TV remote, press Input or Source. If you do not have the TV remote, look for input controls on the TV itself.
  4. Move through the available inputs, pausing about two seconds after each selection, until the DISH picture appears. Choose the HDMI number that matches the port used by the receiver’s cable.

DISH’s replacement-TV setup guidance recommends using the TV’s input control after pressing SAT. If the TV lists inputs by number, check the labels beside its HDMI ports or follow the cable to identify the right one.

Can the DISH remote’s Input button change HDMI?

Sometimes, but the button’s behavior depends on the remote model and its selected mode. DISH’s 40.0 and 52.0 quick-start guides describe the Input button as changing the TV input in TV mode. On the 52.0, pressing Input in SAT mode is assigned to picture-in-picture or multi-view functions instead. For an unidentified remote, the TV’s own Input or Source control is the most reliable fallback.

If the TV still shows no picture

A black, blue, snowy, or “no signal” screen can mean the TV is on the wrong input, a device is off, or a connection is loose. DISH’s troubleshooting instructions suggest checking power, using SAT or HOME on the DISH remote, and trying the TV’s inputs one by one with a short pause between selections.

Set up one-button input switching with HDMI-CEC

Some Hopper-family receiver and TV combinations can use HDMI-CEC to turn on the receiver and TV and select the appropriate input with one button. It requires an HDMI connection, a TV that supports HDMI-CEC, and a supported Hopper setup; it is not a universal DISH remote feature.

DISH’s instructions for ViP receivers use a different legacy procedure: point the remote at the device, hold the desired mode button until all mode buttons light, enter the three-digit code, press #, then press POWER to check whether the device turns off. This pairs or programs device controls; it does not itself change the TV’s HDMI input.
