To change videos without ending a YouTube livestream, keep the same encoder and live session running, then switch the media source inside the encoder. In OBS Studio, use prepared scenes for manual changes or a VLC Video source for an ordered or looping playlist of local files. This avoids deliberately ending and recreating the YouTube session for each video, but it cannot guarantee a buffer-free or uninterrupted stream.

How the switch works

YouTube supports encoder-based livestreaming: the encoder sends video to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. Keep that encoder connection and live session active while changing the video being sent from OBS. YouTube describes encoder streaming as one of its supported methods in Get started with live streaming.

There are two practical OBS workflows. Use a VLC Video source when you want a fixed sequence of files to play automatically. Use scenes and Studio Mode when an operator will choose what appears next.

Choose a workflow

Workflow Best for Trade-off
OBS VLC Video playlist A fixed, ordered or looping set of local video files VLC must be installed, and the playlist should be tested before the live session.
OBS scenes with Studio Mode An operator choosing the next video, interstitial, or layout Requires an operator or configured controls; prepare and preview scenes in advance.

Set up an automatic playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Install it before configuring the playlist, then restart OBS if the source is not available. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  2. Add a VLC Video source. In the Sources dock, select the add button, choose VLC Video, and create a source. Add the local video files you want played in sequence to its playlist.
  3. Choose playback behavior. Enable playlist looping if the sequence should repeat. OBS also documents a shuffle option; leave it off when the order matters. Confirm the source is visible in the scene and sized correctly for the stream canvas.
  4. Check the files and playback. Preview the scene and verify that each file plays, that the order is right, and that audio is present at an appropriate level. Let the playlist reach its end once during testing so you can confirm the loop behaves as intended.
  5. Start the YouTube encoder session. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, configure the encoder with the event’s stream URL and stream key, then start the stream from OBS. The relevant YouTube settings are described in YouTube’s encoder setup help.

Switch videos manually with OBS scenes

  1. Create a scene for each item. In OBS, create a scene for each video or layout you may want to show. Add the relevant media source to each scene and set the source visibility and framing before going live.
  2. Open Studio Mode. Studio Mode provides a preview side and a live/program side. Select the next scene in the preview, check its picture and audio, then use the transition control to take it live. OBS explains scenes and Studio Mode in its OBS Studio overview.
  3. Switch while the stream stays active. Change the live scene within OBS rather than stopping the encoder or ending the YouTube event. OBS also supports scene-switching hotkeys; configure and test them before relying on them during a long stream.
  4. Test transitions. Watch for a black frame, unexpected audio overlap, or a gap while one media source loads. Make any adjustments before using the setup for an unattended or extended stream.

Configure YouTube and protect the stream key

YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room provides the stream key and stream URL used by an encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. If you reset the key, update the encoder’s saved settings before reconnecting. YouTube also exposes auto-start and auto-stop settings; confirm the behavior you want for your event rather than assuming the encoder will manage every part of the session automatically. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

Set the audience correctly for children’s content

If the livestream is directed to children, accurately mark it as made for kids in YouTube’s audience settings. YouTube restricts or disables features on made-for-kids content, including live chat, live chat donations, comments, notifications, personalized advertising, and saving to playlists. Do not mislabel the audience to retain features. Check the current details in YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance.

Test before relying on a long-running stream

  • Check the Live Control Room preview before the event is public.
  • Verify that the event can be reached from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
  • Monitor both audio and video while testing transitions and playlist playback.
  • Test encoder failover if your setup has a failover path.
  • Run a short test before trusting a configuration for a long session; OBS also recommends testing before relying on a setup in its Quick Start Guide.

These checks reduce avoidable setup errors, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted playback. Network conditions, encoder or computer problems, media transitions, and YouTube availability can still interrupt a stream. The cited official guidance does not establish a maximum 24/7 session duration or guarantee indefinite operation.

Troubleshooting common switching problems

  • The VLC Video source is missing: Confirm VLC is installed, then restart OBS and check the Sources add menu again.
  • A playlist item does not play: Verify that the file is accessible on the computer and plays locally. Remove and re-add the item if necessary, then test the whole sequence before going live.
  • The video changes but audio does not: Check the media source’s audio routing and the OBS audio mixer. Preview each scene or playlist item and confirm its audio reaches the stream mix.
  • The YouTube event does not receive the encoder feed: Check that OBS is using the correct stream URL and current key. If the key was reset in YouTube Studio, replace the saved key in OBS.
  • The stream drops during a switch or later in the session: Check the encoder and network connection, review the Live Control Room status, and reconnect using the same event if it remains available. A scene change does not protect against a separate encoder, network, or platform interruption.
