To switch videos without ending a YouTube broadcast, keep your encoder connected and streaming, and change the scene or source it sends to YouTube. In OBS Studio, prepare clips as scenes with Media Sources, then switch directly or use Studio Mode to preview and transition the next scene to the live output. Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
Switch videos while keeping the broadcast live
YouTube receives the encoder’s outgoing feed. Changing the content in that feed does not require ending the YouTube broadcast: leave the encoder session running and change what it outputs. YouTube’s encoder setup explains how the encoder connects using a stream URL and stream key, and how to end a broadcast separately: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Set up video changes in OBS Studio
1. Connect OBS to your YouTube stream
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and get its stream URL and stream key. Enter those connection details in OBS’s stream settings and connect the encoder. YouTube describes these as the details an encoder needs to send its feed; see Manage live stream settings.

2. Make a scene for each clip or segment
In OBS, create a scene for each video, program segment, or layout you may want to show. Add each local video as a Media Source and select the relevant file. OBS documents common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM in its Media Sources guide. A separate holding scene can be useful between clips or while you prepare the next segment.

3. Choose playback behavior for each Media Source
Set each source according to how it should behave when shown and when playback finishes. OBS’s Media Source options include Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, Show nothing when playback ends, and Close file when inactive. Closing an inactive file can free memory, but OBS warns it may cause a short delay when the source is shown again. If minimizing reload delay matters and the computer has enough resources, leave the file loaded.
4. Switch directly or use Studio Mode
For a direct change, select the next scene. For a more controlled change, enable Studio Mode, prepare the next scene in Preview, then click Transition to send it to Program, the live output. OBS says viewers cannot see that Studio Mode is enabled. The OBS Studio Overview explains scenes, transitions, and Studio Mode.

5. Keep the stream running and monitor it
Leave OBS streaming while you make the change. Watch the outgoing picture and listen to the audio so you can catch a missing source, an unexpected playback ending, or an audio problem. YouTube recommends testing the encoder, previewing before going live, and monitoring stream quality during the event in its YouTube live-stream tips and encoder settings guidance.
Controls not to use when changing content
- OBS: Stop Streaming. This stops the encoder from sending its feed.
- YouTube Live Control Room: End Stream. This ends the broadcast; it is not a scene or clip switch.
YouTube’s encoder directions separate changing or sending encoder content from ending the broadcast. If a stream is already live, rehearse the controls in a private or unlisted test stream before using them in production.

Check transitions, duration, and archiving
Do not assume every change is gap-free
Studio Mode lets you prepare a scene before transitioning it to the live output, but that does not guarantee a zero-gap change on every computer, file, or audio setup. Test the actual clips and monitor the outgoing stream. Keeping a Media Source loaded may avoid its documented reload delay, while closing inactive files may save memory.
Plan long broadcasts and recordings separately
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish indefinite uninterrupted duration or the archive outcome for a stream longer than 12 hours. For a longer broadcast, check YouTube’s current limits and make a separate recording or archive plan rather than relying on automatic archiving.

When to use another encoder or a cloud service
OBS is a software encoder suited to switching scenes and local video files. For a higher-production setup, YouTube also lists verified live encoders and notes that hardware encoders can be appropriate. Compare software options by operating-system support, scene and media controls, audio routing, stability, and whether the same output session remains connected. For hardware, check supported YouTube ingest protocol, inputs, reliability, and budget.
