To switch songs without ending an always-on YouTube stream, keep one OBS scene and encoder output running while a VLC Video source advances through a playlist. Add the playlist in OBS, choose its order, and enable looping if it should repeat. Test the actual song joins before going live: OBS documents playlist playback, but its documentation does not promise gapless transitions or automatic audio crossfades.
For Indian music, settle permissions for the specific recordings and intended broadcast before building the schedule. A playlist setting can keep playback moving; it cannot prevent a copyright match or grant rebroadcast rights.
Set up a playlist that advances without restarting your stream
Prepare the files and rights first
Gather the audio or video files you are allowed to broadcast and put them in the order you want. OBS media sources support common formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, WAV, MP4, MOV, and MKV, among others, but compatibility depends on the computer and setup; do not assume every file will play flawlessly. For Indian film, devotional, or other commercial recordings, confirm that your permission covers the actual recording, live broadcast, intended territories, and monetization. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with the label or distributor when using copyright-protected music (YouTube for Artists: Going live for music channels).

- Install VLC on the computer running OBS; OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source.
- In OBS, select the scene that will carry the continuing broadcast. In the Sources panel, click + and choose VLC Video Source.
- Create or select the source, then add the media files to its playlist using the source properties. Arrange the list in your intended sequence.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the list should start again after its final item. Enable Shuffle Playlist if tracks should be randomized rather than played in their listed order. For a curated devotional sequence or a program with a planned mood arc, leave shuffle off.
- Keep this scene active and keep the encoder output running as the source changes tracks. The stream does not need a scene change for each song.
OBS documents playlist, loop, and shuffle controls in its Media Sources guide. Those controls describe how the list advances; they are not a guarantee of gapless audio.

Make transitions feel smooth—and know what OBS does not promise
Audio joins
A playlist can move from one item to the next while the live output continues, but file endings, encoder buffering, and playback behavior can still produce a pause or abrupt join. The OBS documentation reviewed does not establish gapless playback or automatic per-track audio crossfades. Rehearse with the exact files and configuration you intend to use rather than relying on the playlist setting alone.
Visual transitions
If you change visuals between songs, OBS’s scene transitions Fade and Cut affect the picture. You can adjust transition duration in OBS. A scene Fade is not an audio crossfade between playlist tracks; do not use it as evidence that the music will blend smoothly. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Order versus shuffle
- Fixed order: use it when the sequence matters, such as a planned set or a progression from quiet to energetic songs.
- Shuffle: use it when variation matters more than a predictable sequence. Listen for unsuitable adjacent tracks during rehearsal.
- Loop: use it when the stream should return to the playlist’s beginning after the last item. Check that the end-to-start transition is acceptable too.
Rehearse the stream before leaving it on
Run a private or unlisted technical rehearsal with the same OBS scene, media files, and encoder configuration you plan to use. YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for production involving overlays and hardware; its live-streaming eligibility requirements include channel verification and no live-stream restriction during the previous 90 days (YouTube: Get started with live streaming).

- Check the final track and the loop restart if looping is enabled.
- Watch OBS audio meters for peaks, clipping, and unexpectedly quiet tracks; listen on speakers or headphones as well.
- Confirm the intended visual scene remains active while items change.
- Confirm the encoder connects in YouTube Live Control Room and remains stable through track changes.
- Test restart behavior: after closing and reopening OBS or restarting the computer, verify the playlist and encoder return as expected before relying on the setup unattended.
This rehearsal checklist is practical guidance; OBS’s playlist documentation does not certify a particular setup’s uninterrupted playback.

Copyright can interrupt even a technically smooth playlist
Do not treat quieter playback, a different scene, or a short excerpt as a way around copyright matching. YouTube says live Content ID matches can first produce a warning, then replace the stream with a static image and no sound, and may ultimately terminate the stream if matching continues. Read YouTube’s guidance on Content ID matching on live streams.
For protected music, ask the label or distributor about authorization for the specific recordings and intended uses, including live transmission, territories, and monetization. Do not assume a consumer music subscription grants rebroadcast rights. Keep a fallback slate or permitted source ready in case playback must stop; a fallback does not substitute for permission. Troubleshoot interruptions and rough song changes
