To switch sermon videos without ending your church’s YouTube Live broadcast, keep OBS and the YouTube encoder stream running and change the media playing inside OBS. Use a Media Source for one recording or VLC Video for an ordered playlist. Rehearse every change—including the last item returning to the first—and check the picture and audio in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before going live. A loop setting alone does not guarantee gapless playback.
Choose the right OBS source
One sermon that repeats
Add the recording as an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. OBS documents this option as off by default, so check it rather than assuming a clip will repeat. If you intend to play a file only once, review Show nothing when playback ends so the scene does not unexpectedly go blank at the end.
OBS lists local video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM; audio formats include MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.

Several sermons in a set order
Use OBS’s VLC Video source, add recordings in the intended order, leave shuffle off for a predictable sequence, and enable Loop Playlist if it should repeat. OBS documents playlist looping as on by default and shuffle as off by default; verify both settings in your source. VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.

Operator-controlled changes
You can prepare separate scenes or sources and switch between them manually during the broadcast. That gives an operator control over timing, but a cut, fade, or other scene transition is not a guarantee of gapless video. Rehearse the transition using the actual recordings and scene setup you will use on air.
Set up and rehearse the switch
- Keep the media available. Put the video files on the computer running OBS and leave them accessible for the duration of the broadcast. Add a Media Source or VLC Video playlist to the scene you intend to send live.
- Set repeat and order. For one repeating recording, enable Loop on its Media Source. For a playlist, confirm the file order, leave shuffle off if order matters, and enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should start over.
- Check hidden-source behavior. OBS’s Close file when inactive option unloads a hidden media source; OBS notes that it can take a short time to show again while it reloads. VLC Video is documented to stop when it is not visible and restart when visible by default. Choose settings for the intended playback behavior, then test what viewers will see when you hide and show the source.
- Play through the whole sequence before service. Check each file’s beginning and end, every change between recordings, and the last-to-first loop. Listen for pauses or abrupt audio changes; also check scaling, overlays, and any blank frame. This is a verification step, not a guarantee that different files will transition without a gap.
- Connect OBS to YouTube and preview. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the server URL and stream key shown for the live stream in your encoder setup. Start sending the OBS feed and wait for YouTube’s preview. Check the incoming picture and audio before selecting Go live.
- Switch media without stopping the encoder. Once the broadcast is live, change the scene or media source in OBS while leaving the encoder connected and sending content. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes ending a stream by stopping content from the encoder; for a mid-broadcast sermon change, keep that feed running and change what OBS sends.
What the switch can—and cannot—prevent
This method changes the content inside the active OBS encoder feed, so you do not need to create a new YouTube event for each sermon. It addresses black screens caused by playback setup, source visibility, or an unintended end-of-file state. It cannot guarantee uninterrupted internet, continuous encoder operation, or gapless playback between differently encoded files. The YouTube preview and a rehearsal with the same files and settings are the practical checks.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your church expects a saved replay from a long-running loop, account for that duration when planning the broadcast. See YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Common black-screen and playback problems
