To switch OBS scenes automatically as a church service presentation changes, connect presentation software that supports OBS scene control to OBS through its WebSocket server, then map each live content type—such as slides or video—to the scene you want OBS to show. Church Presenter documents this workflow. Adding a video as an OBS Media Source can play it, but does not by itself make OBS switch scenes when sermon content changes.
What you need for automatic scene switching
The presentation software must be able to communicate with OBS and send a scene change when its content changes. In the documented Church Presenter workflow, OBS WebSocket provides that control path, and Church Presenter maps presentation content types to named OBS scenes. This is one documented approach, not evidence that every presentation application has the same capability.
- OBS Studio running on the streaming computer.
- Church Presenter, configured to connect to OBS through WebSocket.
- OBS scenes prepared for the service elements you want to show, such as slides and video.
- For a two-computer setup, both devices on the same local network.
Church Presenter describes automatic scene switching based on per-content-type mappings in its feature information and setup guide. Verify the current application instructions and your own OBS settings before the service.
Connect Church Presenter to OBS

Enable OBS WebSocket
In OBS, open Tools > WebSocket Server Settings and enable the WebSocket server. Note the port and password shown in your OBS setup; Church Presenter’s guide uses port 4455 by default, but use the values actually configured in your installation.

Enter the OBS connection details in Church Presenter
Open Church Presenter’s OBS settings and enter the host, port, and password. If Church Presenter and OBS run on the same computer, use
localhostas the host. If they run on separate computers, enter the OBS computer’s local IP address. The guide specifies that both computers must be on the same local network for that arrangement. -
Map content types to scenes
For each relevant live content type, select the OBS scene that should appear. For example, map presentation slides to a slides scene and video to a media playback scene. Scene names must correspond to scenes that exist in OBS. According to the guide, if a content type has no mapping, OBS stays on the scene that is already active.

Check the connection and rehearse the sequence
Confirm Church Presenter indicates a connection, check every mapping against the intended OBS scene, and run through the service sequence before going live. Test with the same computers and network you will use during the stream; a setup guide cannot guarantee that every local network or production arrangement will behave identically.

Set up video playback separately in OBS
Scene switching and video playback are separate jobs. To play a local sermon video, add an OBS Media Source to the scene that should display it, then configure the source’s playback behavior. OBS documents options such as looping, restarting playback when the source becomes active, and hiding the source at the end. Choose settings that fit the service—for example, restarting on activation can make a clip begin from the start when its scene becomes active. These playback controls do not connect presentation cues to OBS scene changes.

If your workflow needs OBS to receive a signal from an external HDMI device, a capture card can be added as an OBS source. It is an input option, not a requirement for software-driven scene switching. OBS lists capture cards among its source types.

Proclaim’s support material describes configuring slides, a pastor video, or both for streaming through OBS. That establishes a way to present those elements in an OBS stream, but the cited guidance does not establish that Proclaim automatically changes OBS scenes based on sermon content. Do not assume that displaying material in OBS means the presentation software is controlling OBS scenes.

When evaluating another presentation application, check specifically whether it can issue OBS scene changes, how it detects or identifies content types, and what OBS version, operating systems, or network setup it supports. Those details vary by product and should be confirmed in its current documentation.

Troubleshoot missed or incorrect scene changes
- No connection indicator: Confirm the OBS WebSocket server is enabled and that the host, port, and password in Church Presenter match the values in OBS. For a two-computer setup, verify both devices are on the same local network and that the OBS computer’s local IP address is correct.
- OBS remains on the previous scene: Check that the active content type has a mapping and that the selected scene exists in OBS. An unmapped type leaves the current scene active in the documented Church Presenter integration.
- The scene changes, but the video does not play as expected: Inspect the Media Source settings in the target scene. Check whether playback should restart when the source becomes active, whether looping is appropriate, and whether the source should be hidden at the end.
- You are considering a capture card to fix switching: A capture card brings an external video signal into OBS; it does not provide presentation-driven scene automation. Check the WebSocket connection and content mappings for that issue instead.
- The setup works in rehearsal but fails in the service environment: Recheck the connection and mappings using the actual computers and network configuration planned for the stream. The vendor’s configuration guide is not a guarantee of identical behavior on every network.
