Turn on looping only if you want the sequence to repeat. If each episode needs its own title card or layout, set up separate OBS scenes and use a suitable automation method; a playlist alone changes the media, not the scene.
Choose what should switch automatically
“Switch episodes” can mean changing the audio and video file, changing the on-screen layout, or starting the live event at a certain time. These are separate jobs:
- Advance through episode files: use an ordered playlist in OBS. This suits a stream where the same visual layout stays on screen.
- Change graphics or layout between episodes: use OBS scenes or sources as well as episode playback. The exact end-of-file automation depends on the method and version you use.
- Start the live event at a chosen time: schedule the event in YouTube Live Control Room, and separately prepare OBS to send the episode sequence.
YouTube’s stream scheduling does not build or advance an episode playlist. OBS produces the program; YouTube receives it from the encoder. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Set up automatic episode playback in OBS
- Prepare the episode files. Keep local copies of the recordings available to the computer running OBS. Decide whether they should play once, repeat, or shuffle. For a planned podcast sequence, arrange them in the intended order rather than using shuffle.
- Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match the architecture: OBS’s documentation notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, select the scene where the episodes should appear. In the Sources panel, click +, choose VLC Video, create or select a source, and add the episode files to its playlist in the desired order. OBS documents playlist playback, looping, and shuffle controls in its Media Sources guide.
- Set the playback behavior. Enable looping if you want the list to begin again after the last episode. Leave it off if the sequence should end. Use shuffle only when episode order does not matter.
- Check the scene and source behavior. Confirm the VLC source is visible in the intended scene and that playback continues in the circumstances you expect—for example, while another scene is active, if you plan to switch layouts. OBS sources are inputs within scenes; consult the Sources Guide for how sources and scenes fit together.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. Start streaming from OBS, then complete any required Go Live step in Live Control Room for the workflow you chose. Follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions for the applicable setup.
- Rehearse the sequence before going public. Preview it privately or unlisted. Check that the files play in the right order, audio is continuous, the last episode behaves as intended, and any source stop or scene change has an acceptable result. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports private and unlisted stream settings.
Switch scenes or graphics between episodes
A single VLC playlist advances the media files; it does not inherently change the OBS scene or layout when a file ends. If each episode needs a distinct guest image, title card, or arrangement, create the required scenes or sources in OBS and configure an automation method that can detect the end of each file and trigger the appropriate change.

OBS’s official guides describe scenes, sources, and transitions, but they do not provide a complete, version-specific recipe for end-of-file episode switching. Verify that your chosen automation method supports a media-ended trigger in your installed OBS setup, and test each transition before relying on it live. See the OBS Sources Guide and OBS Frontends documentation.
Schedule a stream without confusing it with the playlist
Scheduling arranges the YouTube live event; it does not make OBS start the right episode at the right time by itself. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Live Control Room, then ensure the computer and OBS are ready to send the program when the event begins. The episode order and looping behavior remain settings in the encoder setup.

India availability and the HLS playlist distinction
The YouTube and OBS documentation cited here describes a general workflow, not India-specific account eligibility, network reliability, latency, or feature availability. It establishes neither an India-only restriction nor a special India-specific setup requirement, so confirm the options shown in your own YouTube Studio account.
There are two different meanings of “playlist” in this workflow. OBS’s VLC playlist is the list of podcast episode files. YouTube’s HLS playlist is part of the encoder’s transport of video segments to YouTube—not a tool for choosing the next episode. For HLS ingestion, YouTube specifies 1–4 second segment duration, Transport Stream format, HTTPS transfer, and no more than five outstanding segments; these are protocol requirements, not episode sequencing settings. Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS; OBS’s documentation notes the 64-bit pairing requirement.
- Episodes play in the wrong order: review the file order in the VLC source playlist and disable shuffle if sequence matters.
- The stream stops after the final episode: enable playlist looping if you want playback to restart. If it should finish, plan what viewers will see when the sequence ends.
- The episode changes but the graphic does not: this is expected for a single playlist source. Prepare separate scenes or graphics and configure a tested scene automation method for the desired change.
- YouTube event is scheduled but no program appears: scheduling and encoder output are separate. Confirm OBS is connected with the correct stream URL and key, start the encoder, and complete the Live Control Room steps shown for that event.
- The stream key is rejected or the encoder does not connect: re-check the URL and key copied from the event’s Live Control Room and use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the selected workflow.
