To switch Chrome to light mode, use Customize Chrome > Appearance > Light on a computer, or More > Settings > Theme > Light on Android. On iPhone and iPad, turn off Dark Mode in the device settings; Chrome follows the iOS appearance setting.
Change Chrome to light mode on a computer
- Open Chrome and go to a New Tab page.
- Select Customize Chrome in the bottom-right corner. Google says the control is also available from the Side panel.
- Under Appearance, select Light.
Google Chrome Help describes the desktop dark mode and appearance settings. Choosing Device instead makes Chrome follow your computer’s theme; choose Light to keep the browser interface light when the device is set to dark.
Change Chrome to light mode on Android
- Open Chrome and tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Settings, then Theme.
- Select Light.
Google’s Android instructions also list System default. That option follows the dark theme set in Android or the Battery Saver condition described by Google. Select Light rather than System default if you want Chrome to remain light independently.

Change Chrome to light mode on iPhone or iPad
Chrome’s appearance on iPhone and iPad follows the device’s Dark Mode setting in Google’s documented instructions. Turn off Dark Mode in the device settings to return Chrome to its light appearance. Google’s iOS instructions do not describe the separate in-app Light/Dark selector available on Android.

Why Chrome may still look dark
Chrome changes when your device theme changes
If Chrome switches to dark along with your computer or Android device, it may be set to follow the system theme. On desktop, choose Light instead of Device; on Android, choose Light instead of System default.
Incognito can appear dark
Google notes that Chrome may look dark in Incognito mode. Check a regular Chrome window before changing the browser’s theme.

Google Search has its own appearance setting
If only Google Search pages appear dark, change Search’s setting separately: open Google Search, select Settings > See all settings > Appearance, choose Light theme, and save. Google distinguishes Search’s appearance controls from Chrome’s own dark mode settings; see its Search appearance instructions.

A website may control its own colors
Chrome’s theme changes Chrome-controlled areas such as the homepage, toolbar, settings, and some other pages. It does not guarantee that every website will switch to a light design: a site may have its own appearance settings. Google explains the distinction in its Chrome dark mode guidance.
