You can move your storefront to WordPress, but a Gumroad customer CSV is not a complete store migration. Export customer and purchase records, preserve product files and details separately, rebuild the catalog in WooCommerce, configure digital delivery, and test before changing checkout. Gumroad overlays or embeds can keep selling during development, while checkout remains on Gumroad.

What actually moves from Gumroad to WordPress?

Gumroad’s documented export covers customers and purchases for a selected date range and either all products or one product. It does not establish automatic transfer of your product files, historical WooCommerce orders, recurring subscriptions, memberships, licenses, refunds, or customer entitlements.

Treat the move as separate workstreams:

  • Records: customer and purchase CSV exports.
  • Catalog: product names, descriptions, prices, variants, images and URLs.
  • Files: the original downloads and their version history.
  • Checkout: either Gumroad during a staged transition or WooCommerce after testing.
  • Access: memberships, subscriptions, licenses and other entitlement rules that require account-specific verification.

Gumroad overlay or embed Gumroad WordPress pages can display a Gumroad buy button or embedded product page. Customers continue to Gumroad checkout; this is not a checkout migration.
WooCommerce checkout Your WordPress site WooCommerce catalog data represented in its supported product CSV mapping, plus files and delivery settings you configure. Gumroad orders, IDs, memberships and entitlements are not established as automatically compatible.

Gumroad’s integration documentation answers whether checkout can finish entirely on your own site with “Sorry, that’s not possible.” Use an overlay or embed while building WordPress if uninterrupted Gumroad checkout is more important than an immediate cutover.

Migration steps

1. Inventory the Gumroad account

Create a product-by-product inventory before exporting anything. Record the current product URL, title, description, price, currency, variants, tax or customer-facing promises, original download files, update history, and whether the offer is recurring or membership-based.

Mark every item that grants ongoing access. The documented Gumroad CSV articles do not describe an all-in-one product-and-entitlement export, so confirm how each membership, subscription, license and access rule will be retained before selecting a cutover date.

2. Export customers and purchases with the correct date boundaries

  1. Open Gumroad’s sales area and choose the required date range.
  2. Choose all products or an individual product, then export the customer and purchase CSV.
  3. Add Gumroad’s recommended one-day buffer at both ends of the date range.
  4. Keep the original CSV unchanged and record the export date, selected products and date range.

Gumroad dashboards use the creator’s local timezone, while the purchase date in the CSV is UTC. Preserve that distinction when reconciling sales; do not silently treat dashboard dates and CSV dates as the same timezone. Gumroad’s customer-dashboard documentation also notes that dashboard filters do not change what the sales CSV export contains.

This file is a record for analysis and customer-service continuity. It is not documented as a WooCommerce order-import file.

3. Decide whether Gumroad will remain your checkout during development

For a staged launch, add a Gumroad overlay button or product-page embed to WordPress. Visitors can browse the new site, but the purchase flow still sends them to Gumroad. Keep product links, prices and post-purchase instructions consistent across both locations while you test the WordPress build.

4. Build the catalog in WooCommerce

  1. Install WooCommerce and create a small representative set of products first.
  2. Use WooCommerce’s built-in product CSV importer. A WooCommerce export or the documented CSV schema is a useful template for field mapping.
  3. Map titles, descriptions, prices, SKUs, categories, images and download fields, checking each column before importing.
  4. Use IDs or SKUs when updating existing WooCommerce products. New imports receive the next available WordPress product ID; the CSV cannot assign a specific ID to a new product.
  5. Ensure images are already uploaded or directly accessible online, as required by the importer.
  6. Review the imported products in the WordPress editor before loading the rest of the catalog.

Gumroad-specific variants, licenses and customer-access rules may not have one-to-one fields in WooCommerce. Map those manually or document them as separate implementation work rather than assuming the catalog import reproduces them.

5. Configure virtual and downloadable products

  1. In each WooCommerce product, enable Virtual when no physical shipment is involved.
  2. Enable Downloadable and attach every file customers should receive.
  3. Set download limits and expiry dates only when they match your policy.
  4. Choose the download delivery method that fits your hosting and file sizes.
  5. Test the customer email, account download area and direct download behavior with a test order.

Files uploaded through the WooCommerce product editor are stored in the non-public woocommerce_uploads directory. Files placed in the WordPress media library can be opened by anyone who has their direct URL, so use the product-editor upload path when access protection matters. Large files also depend on server limits and the selected delivery method; check your host’s upload, PHP and request limits before promising reliable downloads.

6. Test a small sample before importing everything

  • Compare the displayed price, currency, description and variant choices with Gumroad.
  • Place a test order using the intended payment gateway.
  • Verify that the confirmation email, account access and file links work on desktop and mobile.
  • Test an expired or limited download if you configured those controls.
  • Check that files cannot be reached through unintended public URLs.
  • Confirm image loading, product URLs, taxes and any required customer notices.

After the sample passes, import the remaining catalog and repeat spot checks across different file sizes and product types.

7. Cut over deliberately

  1. Take a final Gumroad customer and purchase export using the buffered date range.
  2. Save the original product files, catalog inventory and unresolved membership or entitlement list in a separate backup.
  3. Choose a low-risk cutover window and publish the tested WooCommerce products.
  4. Update navigation, email links, social profiles and product URLs consistently.
  5. Leave clear support instructions for customers whose historical purchases or ongoing access are still being reconciled.
  6. Keep Gumroad records available until refunds, disputes, downloads and access questions from the old store are resolved.

What the Gumroad CSV cannot prove

Do not tell customers that their complete account history has moved merely because a CSV imported successfully. The documented exports establish customer and purchase rows, not automatic recreation of:

  • WooCommerce orders, order IDs or refund history
  • Recurring billing and active subscriptions
  • Membership status or gated content access
  • License keys and activation limits
  • Download entitlement state, remaining downloads or expiry dates

For each such item, decide whether you will manually recreate access, use a compatible WordPress extension, retain Gumroad as the system of record, or contact the relevant service for an account-specific transfer procedure. Verify the result with a test customer before disabling the old setup.

Common failure points and fixes

The CSV dates do not match the dashboard

Check the timezone first: dashboard filters use the creator’s local timezone, while CSV purchase dates are UTC. Re-export with a one-day buffer on both ends and reconcile using the original timestamps.

Products imported without images

Confirm that image URLs are directly accessible or upload the images before importing. Then edit the affected products and rerun only the necessary image mapping.

Customers can open protected files

Move protected downloads from the public media library to files attached through the WooCommerce product editor, then test the direct URL while logged out.

A membership customer has no access

Do not infer entitlement from a purchase row. Compare the customer’s Gumroad membership or subscription status with the access rules you configured in WordPress, and manually verify or recreate the entitlement.

You expected Gumroad checkout to stay on the WordPress page

An overlay or embed can present the product on WordPress, but Gumroad still owns checkout. If checkout must be native to WordPress, complete the WooCommerce payment and digital-delivery testing before redirecting customers.

Launch checklist

  • Customer and purchase CSV exported with buffered dates and original timezone context
  • Original files and product details stored independently of the CSV
  • Recurring, membership, license and entitlement cases listed and verified
  • WooCommerce products imported with checked field mappings, SKUs and images
  • Virtual/downloadable settings, file limits, expiry and delivery method tested
  • Payment, email, account downloads and mobile presentation tested
  • Final export and rollback records saved before changing links or checkout
