To switch from AT&T Prepaid and keep your number, start the transfer with your new carrier while your AT&T Prepaid service is still active. AT&T says prepaid accounts do not need a Number Transfer PIN. Before submitting the request, ask the new carrier which account details and authorization fields it requires, then confirm any unclear AT&T Prepaid information with AT&T support.
Before you start the number transfer
Choose a receiving carrier and confirm that it can accept your number. Ask its support team what details it requires for a port from AT&T Prepaid. Fields vary by carrier and may include your AT&T account number, account-holder details, billing ZIP code, or an authorization field. AT&T’s guidance for transfers to AT&T Prepaid lists an active number, account number, and PIN or passcode where applicable, but that incoming-transfer guidance does not establish the exact credentials required to port out of AT&T Prepaid. Ask AT&T Prepaid support to verify the details needed for your specific transfer. The available AT&T instructions do not establish one complete self-service method for every prepaid customer to retrieve outbound account information, so do not assume that a postpaid procedure or another carrier’s form applies.

AT&T’s wireless number-transfer PIN instructions, last updated August 21, 2026, state: “AT&T Prepaid® accounts don’t need a Number Transfer PIN.” The same page describes a four-day expiry for a requested consumer Number Transfer PIN; that expiry applies to the PIN described there, not to a PIN AT&T Prepaid customers are told to obtain.

Do not treat instructions to generate a postpaid Number Transfer PIN as a required step for your prepaid line. If the receiving carrier’s form insists on a PIN or rejects your request, ask the carrier which specific field is failing and confirm the correct prepaid procedure with AT&T Prepaid support.
How to switch and keep your number
- Confirm the receiving carrier’s requirements. Ask which account details and authorization fields it needs for an AT&T Prepaid port. Don’t guess or assume every carrier uses the same form.
- Verify your AT&T Prepaid details. Contact AT&T Prepaid support to confirm the requested account information and how to supply any authorization the new carrier requires.
- Keep your AT&T Prepaid line active. Have the new carrier submit the transfer request. Do not cancel AT&T service first: AT&T warns that disconnecting too soon can require you to reactivate the number before the transfer can be completed. See AT&T’s switching guidance.
- Wait for the new carrier to confirm completion. Follow its instructions for activating service on the new SIM or eSIM, then check that calls and texts work with your number.
- Check the AT&T account afterward. Once the new carrier confirms the port and the new service works, contact AT&T to verify the prepaid line’s closure and ask about any remaining balance or plan implications. Do not assume a balance will be refunded or transferred.
If you want to keep using the same phone
Porting a number does not, by itself, require a new handset. Before moving the SIM or activating an eSIM, check that your current phone is compatible with the new carrier’s network and whether it must be unlocked. Confirm compatibility and unlocking requirements with the relevant carriers; AT&T’s switching guidance also covers device compatibility and unlocking.

If the port request is rejected or delayed
Ask the new carrier to identify the exact field or authorization it could not validate. Then verify that item with AT&T Prepaid support rather than trying PINs at random. AT&T warns that incorrect information can delay a transfer; its transfer guidance discusses the effect of wrong details on a request.

Choosing a receiving carrier
There is no universally best destination carrier for every AT&T Prepaid customer. Compare the plan’s price and included service, coverage where you use your phone, compatibility and unlock requirements for your device, and the carrier’s number-transfer process. Confirm the current requirements directly with the receiving carrier before you begin.
