To lock or unlock the function-key behavior on a Logitech MX Keys, press Fn + Esc. This switches the top row between direct access to Media keys and F-Keys; Logitech says the keyboard defaults to Media keys and displays a notification when the mode changes. You do not need a physical switch.
What Fn + Esc changes
MX Keys has two top-row modes. In the default mode, pressing a top-row key directly activates its Media function. After switching modes, the F-Keys are available directly instead. Press Fn + Esc to toggle between them, then test a top-row key to confirm the behavior you want. Logitech’s MX Keys setup guide documents the shortcut and default behavior; its guide says a notification appears when the switch occurs.
Try the shortcut, then troubleshoot
- Press Fn + Esc together once.
- Test a top-row key without holding Fn. If it now performs the other function, the mode has changed.
- If nothing seems to change, check the exact keyboard model and reconnect or restart the keyboard, then consult the model-specific Logitech support page. These are practical checks, not a diagnostic sequence prescribed by Logitech.
- If you use Logitech configuration software, check the settings available for your exact model and app version. Logitech’s supported-device listing includes MX Keys and multiple MX Keys variants for Logi Options+, but it does not establish that every variant has the same persistent F-key setting. Logitech’s general F-key instructions also describe Fn + Esc and the notification. The MX Keys guide lists Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, but does not specify a different shortcut procedure for each operating system.

If the mode still will not change
If Fn + Esc has no effect after you verify the model and check applicable software guidance, the cause remains unresolved: it could be a model-specific issue or a physical fault. A missing physical switch does not mean you need to replace the keyboard just to change modes; replacement or service is relevant only if there is a hardware problem.
