Keep one YouTube livestream running and switch what viewers see by changing scenes in OBS Studio. Set up a Worship scene for music and its slide or video, and a Sermon scene for the preacher’s camera and audio. Rehearse the transitions and test the complete stream before the service; switching scenes does not require starting a second broadcast.
How the switch works
YouTube receives a single program feed from your encoder. OBS sends that feed while the broadcast is live; when the operator transitions from one OBS scene to another, the picture and audio sources in the program change without ending the YouTube stream. OBS Studio Mode lets the operator preview the next scene before taking it live. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
Set up YouTube and connect OBS
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it publicly, and reset it if it is compromised. YouTube’s interface can change, so confirm the labels in Live Control Room on the service date. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube stream settings.
- Enter the stream details in OBS. Open OBS stream settings and select YouTube if it is available, or enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s documented workflow is to click Go live after the preview appears.
Build the Worship and Sermon scenes
In OBS, scenes are named arrangements of sources. The exact source choices depend on the signals and equipment your church already has. OBS’s Sources Guide covers audio, media, image, text, and video-capture sources.
Worship scene
Create a scene named Worship. For recorded or background music, add a media source for the rights-cleared audio or video. Add an image or text source for a still slide, song title, lyrics, or service information if needed. If the worship team is performing live, use a camera or capture source showing the stage or congregation and route the live audio into OBS instead. Check that the music source is actually playing and audible in the program mix before putting this scene on air.

Sermon scene
Create a scene named Sermon. Add the preacher’s camera feed and the sermon audio feed. If the camera signal does not connect directly to the streaming computer, a compatible video capture card may be needed. Check compatibility with the camera or switcher output, computer ports, operating system, resolution, and frame rate before buying one; it is not necessary for every setup.
Keep sources and audio understandable
Label sources clearly and keep the church audio mixer feed distinct from OBS media audio where the signal path allows. This makes it easier to identify which source is live, prevent competing audio, and correct a muted or overly loud source during rehearsal.

Choose transitions and rehearse the service cues
- In OBS, select a simple cut or fade as the scene transition. Choose a duration that suits the service; there is no single correct duration.
- Enable Studio Mode if the operator should prepare and inspect the next scene before it appears to viewers. Select the scene in preview, verify its sources, then click Transition to take it live.
- Optionally assign scene-switch hotkeys in OBS settings. Test each key and guard against accidental presses during the service.
- Rehearse the actual order with the person operating the stream: opening or holding slide, worship, sermon, and any planned returns to music or announcements. Practice the timing and confirm the right audio is audible after every change.
OBS documents Studio Mode and scene transitions in its Overview Guide. The guide is dated August 25, 2021; menu wording can differ in later installed versions, so verify the controls in your current OBS build.

Test the whole broadcast before the service
- Start the encoder early enough to check that Live Control Room receives a preview.
- Test with audio and video similar to what will be used during the service, including every planned scene transition.
- Listen for music that is too loud beneath speech, missing microphone audio, doubled audio, or a media source that has stopped.
- Check that viewers can reach the event from the church channel and its watch page.
- Monitor stream quality and encoder status. Set bitrate to suit the chosen resolution and the available upload connection; use YouTube’s current recommended encoder settings and test the actual setup rather than assuming a value will work for every connection.
YouTube recommends advance setup, preview checks, tests with similar audio and video, and ongoing monitoring. Its recommendations and Live Control Room labels may change; check the current YouTube settings when configuring the event.

Switch scenes during the service and end the stream
- Keep the YouTube broadcast and OBS encoder connected. Do not stop the stream just to change from music to the sermon.
- At the worship cue, select the tested Worship scene or use its tested hotkey. Confirm that the intended slide or camera is visible and that music or live worship audio is present.
- When the sermon begins, select Sermon in Studio Mode and use Transition, or switch directly if that is your rehearsed workflow. Confirm the preacher is framed correctly and speech is clear.
- When the service is finished, end the broadcast using the Live Control Room and encoder instructions. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. If the church relies on an archive or a local recording, verify that it exists after the service.
Clear music rights before streaming
Check the rights for the specific songs and recordings, the territories where they will be streamed, and whether the planned use includes a public archive. A church license does not automatically establish that every live or archived use is covered; confirm the terms with the relevant rights holder or licensing organization.
YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content. If a match is detected, YouTube may warn the streamer to stop using the content and may interrupt or terminate the stream if it remains. Even when the church has licensed third-party material, YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. See Copyright issues with live streams.

Equipment choices depend on the signals you already have
A software-only setup can work when compatible camera and audio signals already reach the streaming computer. OBS supports video-capture sources, including capture cards, but a church should match any card to its camera or switcher output and computer before purchasing. A separate audio interface or hardware encoder may suit a particular production, but neither is a universal requirement. YouTube describes encoder workflows using cameras and other hardware and suggests professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events; its guidance also notes that getting started need not require expensive equipment. Choose equipment against the actual signal path, operator needs, budget, and available upload bandwidth.

Or let it run in the cloud
For a church that wants uploaded sermons or worship videos to play continuously as a YouTube stream rather than switch between live camera scenes, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video and does not replace a live camera-and-scene workflow. Start the free day with StreamNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can OBS change scenes without ending the YouTube stream?
Yes. Keep the encoder connected and transition between scenes in OBS; YouTube continues receiving one broadcast.
Why might YouTube interrupt a church stream during music?
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can lead to a warning, interruption, or termination; licensed content may also require the rights owner to allowlist the channel through Content ID.
