To interact with content inside an iframe, switch WebDriver into that frame with driver.switchTo().frame(...) before locating the content. When the frame may load asynchronously, wait with ExpectedConditions.frameToBeAvailableAndSwitchToIt(...). Return to the page with defaultContent(), or move up one level in nested frames with parentFrame().
Why Selenium needs an explicit frame switch
An iframe contains a separate document context. WebDriver searches the context currently selected: before switching, it searches the top-level page, not the iframe’s inner elements. After switching, searches run inside the frame instead. This context change explains why an element that is visibly present in the browser can still produce a “No such element” error.
The Selenium Project documents three ways to switch to a frame: by its WebElement, by its name or ID, or by its zero-based index. Selenium: Working with IFrames and frames
Wait for a frame, switch into it, and interact
Use the frame-availability expected condition when the iframe might not exist yet at the time your test reaches it. The condition waits for the located frame and switches into it; subsequent element lookups therefore run in that frame.

driver.switchTo().defaultContent();The ten-second timeout is an example, not a universal setting. Choose a duration appropriate for the application and test environment. The documented expected-condition overloads and behavior are listed in the Selenium Java ExpectedConditions API.
Choose a frame selector

The Java API documents selection by element, name or ID, and index in the Selenium Java WebDriver API. For maintainability, prefer a stable locator or a unique name or ID over a positional index when the page provides one.

Switch by index

// Find and use elements inside the first frame.The index is zero-based. Because its meaning is tied to the current frame order, it is less descriptive than a locator and may become incorrect if the page’s frame structure changes.
Return to the page or move between nested frames
After interacting with the iframe, deliberately select the context needed for the next operation. defaultContent() returns to the top-level page document, regardless of how deeply nested the current frame is. parentFrame() moves only to the immediate containing context.

Handle nested iframes one level at a time
Switch into the outer frame before locating an iframe nested inside it. Then switch into the inner frame before searching for its content. Each switch changes the context used by later element searches.

Troubleshoot frame-switching failures
- “No such element” for visible content: Check whether the element is inside an iframe. Switch into the correct frame before locating it. If it is a page-level element, first leave the frame with
defaultContent(). - The frame is not found immediately after navigation or an action: The frame may not be available yet. Wait with
frameToBeAvailableAndSwitchToItrather than assuming it has loaded. See the ExpectedConditions API. - The test switches to the wrong frame: Check the frame’s actual
id,name, and nesting. Duplicate names or IDs select the first match; an index selects by current order. - Elements on the main page stop resolving: The driver may still be inside a frame. Use
defaultContent()to return to the top-level document, orparentFrame()to move up one nested level. - The frame element became stale after a page rerender: The page may have replaced the iframe element. Locate the frame again using a stable locator, then wait for its availability and switch again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does switching into an iframe also switch back automatically after a click?
No. The selected browsing context remains the frame until you explicitly call defaultContent() or parentFrame().
Can I locate an element inside an iframe using a CSS selector from the page context?
Not until WebDriver has switched into the iframe containing that element. The selector is evaluated in the currently selected document context.
