The most reliable approach is to save a reviewed handoff brief, preserve original exports where available, and reconnect provider-specific tools and context deliberately.
What carries over when you switch models?
It depends on whether you are changing a model inside one product, moving between accounts, or building an API workflow. A model switch is not necessarily a conversation migration.
- Claude model switch: Anthropic says that selecting another model from the model-name control after messaging in an existing chat opens a new chat. The existing conversation does not simply continue unchanged. See Anthropic’s model-selection guidance.
- ChatGPT conversation transfer: OpenAI documents exporting conversations from an eligible account and uploading the conversation file to a new conversation as reference. This does not fully merge accounts, recreate the original chats or sidebar, or transfer settings, memories, GPTs, files, subscriptions, or workspace access. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspace data cannot be exported through ChatGPT settings using this procedure. Check the current transfer instructions and eligibility before relying on it.
- Claude memory import: Claude offers a flow for importing remembered context from another service. Anthropic calls the feature experimental and says imported memories may not be incorporated successfully; memory may also filter details because it is designed to focus on work-related context. Treat it as an aid for preferences and recurring work context, not an archive of chats or a guaranteed migration. See Anthropic’s memory import and export guidance.
- API conversation state: API workflows can pass earlier messages or saved state into later requests, but request formats differ by provider. OpenAI describes including earlier messages or prior response output in subsequent requests. Gemini supports follow-up turns with conversation history; its Interactions API also supports server-managed state using a previous interaction ID or client-managed history. For an agent workflow that routes requests to different providers, OpenAI advises selecting the model explicitly rather than relying on a runtime default. Mixed-provider configuration and adapter details vary by language and framework; consult the relevant Agents SDK model documentation.
Make a portable handoff before you switch
A short, editable note is usually more useful for continuing an active task than an unfiltered transcript. It is a practical way to preserve the context that matters; it is not a product feature or a promise that every model will interpret the note identically.

- Inventory the task. Write down the goal, current status, decisions, definitions, constraints, preferences, useful references, unresolved questions, and next action. Separate durable project facts from incidental chat.
- Keep the note portable. Use plain text or Markdown so you can inspect and edit it before giving it to another model. Do not put secrets or sensitive personal details in it unless necessary and appropriate.
- Ask the current model for a draft, then review it. Check that the brief has not omitted an important constraint or turned an uncertain point into a fact. The handoff should be accurate, not merely concise.
- Save source material separately. Export a conversation where supported and retain the original export as an archive. If you upload it to a new conversation, treat it as reference material unless the destination explicitly documents a true migration.
- Give the destination a verification task. Ask it to restate the goal, constraints, and next action from the handoff. Correct anything missing or distorted before asking it to continue.
Move preferences, files, and tools separately
Project state and personal preferences are different kinds of context. If the destination has a memory-import feature, use it for stable response preferences and recurring work context, then inspect what it retained. Do not assume that memory import also brings over old chats, project files, custom assistants, settings, integrations, or workspace access.
Reconnect the parts of the workflow that the destination does not document as transferring: attach or locate the required files, enable tools and integrations, re-enter custom instructions, and map prompts or output formats to supported features. Keep reusable prompts in your own workspace where possible rather than relying on a single provider’s chat history.

Keep API workflows portable
For an application that can use more than one model, store only the state needed to continue the task and convert it to the destination API’s required format. OpenAI’s approach can include prior messages or response output; Gemini can use supplied history or, with the Interactions API, a previous interaction ID for server-managed state. These are provider-specific approaches, not interchangeable request formats.
- Make model selection explicit where the workflow allows it, rather than depending on a changing default.
- Keep provider-specific configuration and adapters separate from the rest of the application so changing a model does not force unrelated workflow logic to be rewritten.
- Check the target model’s context limit before sending a long history. OpenAI warns that oversized prompts can exceed the context window and be truncated; a different model or API may also receive a different representation of earlier turns.
- Test the new route with one representative task and verify both the model’s output and the state your application expects to persist.
