To physically swap a SIM, open the tray with the supplied ejector pin, replace the card in the position and orientation specified for your exact Galaxy model, then reinsert the tray gently. If you only want to change which number handles calls, texts, or mobile data, leave the card in place and use SIM card manager instead.
Before you open the SIM tray
Check your exact Galaxy model and regional variant in Samsung Support before removing the tray. Tray location, number of SIM slots, and card orientation differ across devices. Samsung also notes that screens and settings can vary by model, software version, and wireless provider. Samsung’s Galaxy SIM-card guide and model-specific instructions are the safest references for your device.
- Use the supplied SIM ejector pin. Press it into the tray release hole—not a microphone opening—and do not force it.
- Have the replacement SIM ready. Samsung Galaxy phones generally use nano-SIMs, but confirm the requirements for your model.
- If your phone has a case, remove it if it blocks access to the tray.
How to physically swap a SIM card
- Find the correct tray. Check the model’s support instructions for the tray location and SIM-slot layout.
- Release the tray. Insert the ejector pin into the release hole and press gently until the tray loosens. Pull the tray straight out without bending it.
- Remove the old SIM. Note how it sits in the tray, then lift it out.
- Place the replacement SIM. Set the nano-SIM in the designated SIM position and match the orientation shown for your model. Do not rely on a universal gold-contact direction; it is not the same for every tray.
- Reinsert the tray. Slide it back in carefully and fully. Do not force it if it catches; remove it and check that the card is seated properly.
- Check service. Wait for the phone to recognize the SIM. If it does not, follow your model’s instructions before reseating or restarting the phone, and confirm with your carrier that the line is active.
Change the selected SIM without removing a card
If your Galaxy supports dual SIM and both lines are set up, you can choose which one to use for calls, text messages, or mobile data in settings. Samsung’s menu labels and options may differ by device and software.
- Open Settings > Connections > SIM card manager.
- Make sure the SIM you want to use is enabled.
- Choose the preferred SIM for Calls, Text messages, or Mobile data.
On supported devices, Samsung also describes selecting a SIM from the Quick panel. The available shortcut and controls vary by model. Samsung’s dual-SIM guide covers these options. A second SIM cannot receive a call simultaneously while the other SIM is being used for a call, so dual-SIM support does not mean two simultaneous voice calls.

Use an eSIM instead of swapping a physical card
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile, so it does not go in the tray. It requires a compatible phone and an eligible wireless service plan; availability depends on the model, region, and carrier. Samsung Australia documents this setup path for supported Galaxy devices: Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Add mobile plan > Scan carrier QR code. Follow your carrier’s activation instructions. A QR code or plan is not necessarily reusable or transferable. Samsung Australia’s SIM and eSIM instructions explain the process and its limitations.
Some compatible Galaxy models offer automatic data switching, which can use another configured SIM for mobile data in certain circumstances. It is an optional setting, not a guarantee that the second line will have service. Check the model-specific instructions and carrier plan terms before relying on it.

Check compatibility before adding a second line
Samsung does not say that every Galaxy supports dual SIM, eSIM, two active lines, or two physical SIM cards. Compatibility can vary by model, regional variant, and carrier. Samsung’s U.S. support page gives examples of hybrid eSIM models and notes that two physical SIMs are supported only on certain unlocked devices; that guidance is specific to the U.S. page, not a universal list for every market. Check Samsung’s U.S. compatibility guidance, then confirm the exact variant with Samsung and your carrier.
- Only replacing a card? Follow the tray and orientation instructions for your exact phone.
- Choosing which existing number to use? Use SIM card manager; you do not need to move the cards.
- Adding a digital line? Confirm eSIM support and obtain activation instructions and a service plan from your carrier.
- Traveling with a local SIM? Check that the phone and carrier are compatible and review your plan terms before relying on the local line.
If the new SIM is not recognized
- Turn the phone off if your model’s instructions call for it, then check that the SIM is seated in the correct slot and orientation.
- Reinsert the tray gently and restart the phone if appropriate for your device.
- Ask your carrier whether the SIM is activated and provisioned for service.
- Contact Samsung Support if the tray is damaged, stuck, or the phone still does not detect a correctly installed SIM.
Samsung identifies model and carrier differences as possible factors in SIM setup and service. Its U.S. support guide provides device guidance; activation and provisioning questions belong with the carrier.
