Use Python’s minus operator (-) to subtract the number on the right from the number on the left: 10 - 3 evaluates to 7. You can print the result, assign it to a variable, or use the subtraction in a larger expression.
Subtract numbers or variables with -
Write the left operand, a hyphen-minus, and the right operand. Python’s tutorial describes the interpreter as a simple calculator that evaluates expressions you type. See the official Python tutorial.
print(8 - 5) # 3
price = 20
discount = 7
remaining = price - discount
print(remaining) # 13In a - b, Python subtracts b from a. The same expression works directly in a print call or as the value assigned to a variable.
How Python groups subtraction with other operations
Multiplication is evaluated before subtraction. Parentheses let you specify a different order when needed.

Why subtraction sometimes returns a float
The operand types determine the result’s numeric type. Subtracting two integers produces an integer; if one operand is a float, the arithmetic result is a float. For example, the tutorial’s expression 4 * 3.75 - 1 evaluates to 14.0. The decimal part may be zero, but the result is still a float. See Python’s numeric types documentation.

Choose a number type that fits the calculation

Python’s floating-point tutorial explains why some base-10 fractions are approximated in binary. This is a representation limitation, not a problem with subtraction itself.

print(change) # 0.90Constructing values from strings preserves the decimal inputs, and subtraction can preserve their fixed-point scale. Avoid combining Decimal and float in arithmetic; use one numeric type consistently. See the Decimal documentation.

Fix common subtraction surprises
- The result ends in
.0: At least one operand is likely a float, so the result is also floating-point. - The last decimal places look slightly different than expected: Binary floating-point approximates many decimal fractions. For equality checks on float calculations, use an appropriate tolerance rather than assuming arbitrary results will match exactly; use
Decimalwhen decimal-oriented arithmetic is needed. - You get a
TypeErrorinvolvingDecimal: Check that you are not mixingDecimalandfloatvalues. - The answer reflects the wrong order: Add parentheses around the operation that should happen first.
